While this game does suffer from a lot of missed potential, ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN and its DLC provide hundreds of hours of fun; it easily kept my friends and I hooked and grinding for months. The main idea of NIGHTREIGN is to condense the classic ELDEN RING experience down into a 45 minute run with randomized bosses, points of interest and weapons, and make it cooperatively playable up to 3 people. ELDEN RING NIGHTEIGN isn't exactly a roguelike, but it definitely plays like one. And a kind of weak one, at that. It's not a big deal at all when you first start playing, but becomes more apparent as you rack up hours. This game's biggest flaw is its lack of randomization in its experiences, leading to fatigue and runs ultimately not feeling significantly different from each other. This problem is helped by the addition of the DLC's content, but there are still many "What If?" moments. What if they could have added Shadow of the Erdtree weapons? What if there were twice as many legacy Dark Souls bosses? What if the POI's weren't so formulaic? If you are a massive roguelike fan, you may find other games in the genre to far surpass NIGHTREIGN's random elements. Basically everything else is so great though. The FROMSOFT combat and gameplay formula is more fun than ever, with new additions to the sandbox unique to NIGHTREIGN. The super sprint added brings the pace up to a blistering level and it's addicting to dart around the map. All playable characters are so much fun to play and master, with different costumes to acquire and relics to customize your loadout. All the bosses pose a feasible challenge and remain a blast to learn. NIGHTREIGN's best aspect are the ten final NIGHTBOSSES. They are completely original bosses with insane spectacle, challenge, and sense of reward for overcoming. Taking on each one and finally managing to conquer them alongside two friends still hasn't lost its luster. These are some of the greatest bosses FROMSOFT have ever created. Most of them have an alternate 'hard mode' version, with difficulty cranked to 11 and insane alternate movesets. Post launch, FROMSOFT added a "ranked mode" called Deep of Night, and it provides a massive challenge as well. This hard mode, alongside the added "hard mode" bosses offer tons of replayability. This game is an absolute blast, and will remain in rotation with my friends for a while. If you can't get enough FROMSOFT and you have a few friends willing to take the plunge, this is an easy recommend.
Review from the perspective of a dad with very limited time: Honestly, a terrible choice if you’re looking for a quick gaming session. A single run can take up to 40 minutes, and since you cannot pause the game, this becomes a real problem — especially in Duo or Trio. You cannot simply pause an online multiplayer game! So be warned: you need a proper time slot to play this game in peace. This is not a “jump in for 10 minutes” kind of experience. That said: It takes a while to get used to the pace — but once it clicks… oh boy, this game absolutely slaps. The power spikes hit hard, and when everything comes together, it feels insanely good. Despite the time commitment issues: 9/10 Soulslike — amazing gameplay, just not parent-friendly.
