Great game, lots of work done on the engine making the game run much smoother and more stable then before. Been playing for hours and no crashes or problems. Has that Master of Magic one more turn feel. I hope this game does well so that the developers can continue to add new content for it.

This game is literally a dream come true! It finally fulfills Stardock's vision from 15 plus years ago and delivers the full experience and promise of this game series. I still can't quite believe it exists because it isn't their big money maker and more of a passion project. Probably my favorite fantasy 4X of all time. Really enjoy the work they've put in so far and really hope it's successful so we can get some future DLC!

I've played a ton of FFH2, AOW, Deity Empires, and have at least tried most fantasy 4x games on the market. Here's how Elemental stacks up: 1. Atmosphere: Elemental nails the fantasy post-apocalyptic vibe. You start vanishingly weak as a single unit (your sovereign) in a ruined and hostile world that initially starts overrun with aggressive wildlife and creatures that can and will attack your units and destroy your cities. These normally originate from a lair that, if not dealt with, will create new stacks of hostile entities over time. I've spent many games attempting to "farm" these spawns for the exp and loot just to be overrun as the lairs suddenly upgraded and released its defenders on a nearby city. I now respect the world, and work to eliminate these lairs as soon as possible to make the world safe. The wildlands are also a super nice touch in making the world feel forbidden and hostile, and it's always fun to delay winning a game so you can test your army against a giant primordial being. It's a great vibe. 2. Armies: Fitting the vibe described above, your armies tend to be relatively mundane compared to those in other 4x games, outside of a few dips related to specific factions. Your magic abilities are generally focused on your sovereign and champions, which are limited in number and cannot be stacked together without suffering an exp penalty, which means an optimized stack will generally be your leader and eight other units. These units will be more or less normal guys, designed and equipped by you in accordance with the tech you've researched. There is something cool about starting out with units that can best be described as "naked and afraid" and teching up and building up infrastructure until you're producing phalanxes of chain-mailed mace wielders with tower shields ready to beat back the dangers of elemental (and any other kingdoms or empires in your path). Something about beating the absolute ♥♥♥♥ out of a dragon with squads of spearmen or macemen nails the "adaptive humanoids crushing monsters" concept. 3. Cities: Elemental's uniqueness here is how each city has separate upgrade paths that can get nutty in the endgame. Towns can upgrade to improve the production of every other city (hello scaling), fortresses can reduce unrest faction wide (hello taxation), and conclaves can provide fire/water shards (great for battlemages) and extra research (always useful). I always have a plan of how of each I want, and that plan always gets wrecked by the landscape, the position of wildlife, and enemy AIs. I fully recommend trying a meme game where you build 1 conclave, 1 fortress, and 9 towns, and watch as your production and gold skyrockets and you can build basically any unit in 2 turns. Or, go full conclaves as resoln (which has a unique way of obtaining units) and use the insane research advantage to reach the repeatables and pump your resources/damage/accuracy/defense to the moon. You'll generally win the game before these factors become relevant, but it's still fun to take crushing victory laps. 4. Heroes: There is your sovereign (great, dependable, good from the get-go) and your champions (sidekicks and babysitters, nothing to really rely on strategically). One unique thing here: there are a number of spells that allow you to dump a ton of mana to permanently improve combat stats (eg, death magic lets you trade 100 mana for +1 attack). It's a late game strat, since mana is super tight during the part of the game that matters, but it's entertaining to take all of your excess mana and then use it turn your sovereign into a one man army. Try initiative stacking until your sovereign can take 5 turns for each of your enemies' 1 turn. 5. Factions: This game compromises on unique faction identity in favor of 1) customizable nations, 2) customizable units, and 3) customizable sovereigns. As a result, the factions can feel samey, especially if you roll the same unit type and sovereign types overall. I'd encourage you to try out themed games. Going all in with demons as resoln or juggernauts as Yithril can be a nice break from the usual squads of spearmen. I personally would prefer more uniqueness, but the current approach means that factions are not pigeon-holed into specific playstyles or goals. 6. AI: The AI is serviceable and capable of casting spells on your units in the overland map (watch out for tremor spells locking down your main stack for 3 turns!) as well as stacking up to take your cities. It's not perfect but Frogboy takes a particular interest in it, and has made several changes in the current betas. 7. Stability and performance: This part is rough. When they said this is a true EA title, they meant it: there are tons of bugs, new and half-polished features and content, and performance issues. I would recommend keeping game sizes to small or medium. All things together, I keep coming back to Elemental because it nails the "man vs nature" fantasy by making you struggle and struggle against a hostile universe before the pieces of your plan come together and rocket your faction to victory. If you're an experienced 4x player, the above should let you know if this is the game for you. tldr: last game i found a magic bastard sword and then channeled all of my faction's excess mana into powering up my sovereign until he was soloing dragons without taking damage and it was rad as hell

I love it and thought that it deserves the thumbs up already. Please notice that I'm not doing this review after only playing for a couple of hours, and I plan to be playing it much more. It's still early (beta) and many things aren't in yet that will be added before release. Also an occasional bug or crash can occur. With that in mind I will adjust this review on full release if necessary. If you loved Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes then you will love this as it appears to just be a revamped version of it at first glance. Once you get farther in you notice that many things have changed that make it more than just a revamp but it does look like one at first. Tons of enemies, items, and customizations possible. I love that you can gear up any unit. The lowly spearman with awesome gear can truly be incredible. You can also customize how you're future units are geared as you research new techs. With so much more to come I think the game is a steal at it's current price. If you think that you may like it but you're still on the fence, then wishlist/follow it and wait until everything is added. I think that this will be one of my favorites and that's why I wanted to go ahead and write the review. I'm sure that there will be some review bombing as people can't seem to understand that everything isn't perfect in beta or early releases. This review will help balance any negative ones. Great job Brad! I look forward to the finished product and future dlc's even. 49 hours in now and I will be playing many more.

I played Elemental and Fallen Enchantress a long time ago. This is basically a combination of those games (plus Sorcerer King). I like the placement of this game between Endless Legend 2 and Age of Wonders 4: faction and hero customization, city building, quests, item crafting, unit design. Plus it works pretty well on the Steam Deck (even more so when they scale/improve the UI).
