One of my all-time favorite games. I played it too long ago to write a detailed review, but I owe it a thumbs up, because the game has lodged itself in my brain for far longer than I thought it would. This isn't a point-and-click, but it's an adventure game in the truest sense of the word. The town reminded me of playing as Deku Link in Majora's Mask as a kid, wandering around in awe and confusion at all the strange people around me. The hacking mechanic allows for some fun sequence breaks and exploits, and it's a lot more fun than the trial-and-error of classic point-and-clicks. The story itself is an offbeat coming-of-age journey that feels like freshman year in university. You're on your own in the big city, hanging out with wannabe anarchists at the club, following your crush into a war against Google. Y'know, standard stuff. Above all, the game is filled with moments that make you feel like you're sneaking into some place where you don't belong, fiddling with something you shouldn't touch, and there's no telling what'll happen next. Every step of the journey is unpredictable and novel. This is a quirky game, and it's not as casual as it looks. A lot of people will probably find it confusing, and the story doesn't have any obvious narrative hooks like a VN or JRPG. But, I wholeheartedly recommend Else Heart.Break() if you enjoy classic point-and-clicks or adventure games. I've never played anything else like this.

Else Heart.Break() was a decently fun experience. I really wanted to adore it after being brought nearly to tears by Hacknet, but its entirely too short, and the story is not very interesting. No matter how many dialog options were presented to me, I did not care one bit about chasing Pixie. The art and music in the game are wonderful. I had a hard time manipulating the camera to truly appreciate it, but when you can it is truly something special. The possibilities the game world presents you when you acquire a modifier (perhaps even 2) are incredible, but they aren't explored. Additionally, you aren't really rewarded for doing anything outside the box. You can find a computer with the name of every door in the game and there's some fun extra stories in the floppies, but it didn't really change the experience. It felt like by keeping the story short and by limiting the code complexity for a story solution to only a line or two, the game was kept from being a true masterpiece. During my play-through I got ignored by my parents on my birthday, drank all my Dad's booze, created a brute force key and let myself into strangers apartments to watch them sleep, got accused of stalking when I really did just have a cigarette on me in the shoe store, met a dude reading a titty magazine at his job, coded a network to slurp, got asked to ♥♥♥ in a virtual girls mouth, and got kicked off the island on the same boat I arrived on. var reviewScore = 6 if reviewScore > 7 print("A sequel (even a DLC or story mod) aimed at more advanced programmers with more complex problems to solve would be killer. Its a shame its been a decade with nothing of the sort.") else Heart.Break() print("</3") end Note: Do NOT pay $25 for this. It is not worth that price whatsoever.

i really loved the game mechanics, but unfortunately the story is lacking, the ending is one of the most unsatisfying i know. And there was very poor gametesting done on it - since despite an very short plotline the story is really easy to break. I am really sad to give this game a bad review - since a really LOVE the idea and the execution of the unoque mechanics. Also i really LOVE the style. It is surely a most unique game and i wish more games like this would be out there... but unfortunatelythe story sucks a lot. It starts promising, the characters are funny, but start lacking dialogues and depth as you progress through it. If it is really a game about friendship... wtf are the character's are not sticking together at the end? I feel like i am lost and completely on my own in the endgame and nobody gives a damn, since all the sidecharacters run out of dialogues and just simply ignore me... up to a point i've suspected that it is a kind of bug. There seems to be a deep lore at the beginning, but you never get to the bottom of it... it makes me mad. I really wish if the author attempts another game like this - that they will focus on the story in the same way they'd focused on the mechanics and the graphics - it would be one of the best fames ever. I will recommend it anyway, since i see here too much of a potential to let this game go unnoticed - if you are looking to explore really great game mechanics - this game is for you, we need more games like this out there... but storywise it is sadly a hard pass.

Very nice little adventure game, with a very sweet retro visual style.

I have attempted many times to describe the vibes and aesthetic of Else Heart.Break() and thus far, the term that feels the most apt is "Aspartame-punk". The story has some interesting moments, but the game almost seems to not want you to experience the full story, as several important moments can be easily missed by accident if you don't keep constant track of the time and/or forget what your objective is. When it comes to hacking, the main story will provide little to no challenge for an experienced programmer, though that will likely be a good thing for those with less experience. Outside of the story, though, there are many interesting opportunities for clever programming, that will allow you to build your way up to an essentially god-like status! When it comes to that aspect, there is a unique and interesting progression through discovering the names of various devices and their APIs, so on your first playthrough at least I would recommend that you DO NOT READ THE DOCUMENTATION helpfully provided by steam users in the guides section (except for the SPRAK manual, I never remember how to do loops in this language). Overall, while this game is flawed, and I've had my fair share of complaints about it (SAVE OFTEN, it's quite easy to get stuck), I've come to the conclusion that those flaws are part of its beauty, and a part of why I keep coming back to it. No game exists that is quite like Else Heart.Break() .
