Dec. 2025
I don’t leave reviews for games very often, but this one truly deserves it. This is one of those rare, under-the-radar gems- beautiful, engaging, and challenging without ever feeling punishing. It’s genuinely unique. The visuals are stunning, and the blend of RTS mechanics with a third-person perspective feels fresh and thoughtfully executed. I loved it. As an entomologist, I was genuinely impressed by the level of detail. I often find myself frustrated by games that vaguely refer to “bugs” without even the most basic biological accuracy (spoiler alert: insects have six legs). Here, the realism is exceptional. The use of photorealistic textures combined with fully “crawlable” environments, rather than flat photo backdrops, adds an incredible sense of immersion that clearly reflects careful research and design. Ironically, despite being an entomologist, I also have a phobia of ants. Yet this game allowed me to explore their world in a way that actually increased my appreciation for them. Yes, it absolutely triggered my discomfort- there are ants everywhere, all the time!! But it also provided a surprisingly safe space to confront that fear. As a result, my instinctive panic and urge to squash ants has genuinely lessened. The developers and studio deserve far more recognition for what they’ve created here. This feels like a timeless masterpiece that will age exceptionally well. The gameplay is wonderfully relaxing. I’ve seen claims that it has no replayability, and I strongly disagree. I can spend hours in skirmishes building my ant colony, collecting resources, and charging into battle atop a snail. One mission even let me ride a praying mantis, which was an absolute delight and the highlight of the game for me. There are also exploration-focused missions, so it’s not purely strategy-driven. On top of that, the AI difficulty is adjustable- if strategy isn’t your thing, you can dial it back and enjoy a more laid-back experience focused on building and exploration. I didn’t expect much in terms of story, but I was pleasantly surprised. The narrative is deeper and more complex than anticipated, adding a rewarding layer to the single-player campaign. 5/5 stars. Honestly, this game deserves Game of the Year. Innovative, distinctive, and visually stunning. Refreshingly far from the usual rinse-and-repeat formula seen in so many strategy games today.

Amazing game. Took me about 3-4 hours to really get into it, but now I'm hooked and looking forward to each session. It's very satisfying to control the ant. There are many unique and gorgeous locations, and it's just amazing to see the world from the point of view of an ant. If you love nature then this game is for you. I enjoy both the exploration and strategy missions. This is a very unique game that deserves more praise.

This isn’t an "ant simulator" per se, it's a spiritual successor to the 2001 RTS of the same name, which itself was based on Bernard Werber’s sci-fi novels. While the plot of the books and original game had sapient ants facing existential dread against a godlike human enemy, this game features sapient ants engaged in epic insect wars. Expect boxed-in maps, basic nest-building and small to medium scale battles. This game has some STUNNING VISUALS and a wonderful soundtrack. It's arguably worth the price for the eye-candy alone (if you're into social insects and stuff).

I like this game, but it's not what I expected. First, the game is total eye candy. I don't know how well it scales down, but on ultra settings in 4k on my 5700X3D + 7900XTX system I get 70-100FPS and it looks *really* good. Like stunning. Impressive for a gamer but a fun jaw-dropping thing to show non-gamers. Secondly, this is a chill/cozy controller game. I thought I'd be sitting close to my screen clicking away in RTS mechanics, but I find myself sitting back on the couch with a controller admiring the graphics and sending my ant legions around without ever really feeling threatened. So far I'm 3+ hours in on the main campaign and it's like an RTS but you control a single ant from a third person perspective and order around the legions from there. There was already a random platformer lever... Yes... your ant can jump and they have you leaping from leaf to leaf. If you didn't realize it wasn't an actual simulation you will when you power hop across the map like a frog. Maybe you realized it wasn't a simulation when the ants talked to each other. Most of the negative reviews I see are from people who wish it was either Sim Ant or a more traditional RTS. It is a relaxed 3rd person strategy genre mashup with eye candy nature graphics. If you're into that then this game is very much worth it.
