Empire TV Tycoon is a fun and simple simulation of running a TV station. It is not very realistic nor very "Tycoon" as other games using that name tend to be, but the fun comes in making all the pieces fit into a given broadcast day. Playing this game is basically Weird Al's "UHF" as a simulator, in that you are making and scheduling a pretty weird and seemingly random set of programs to broadcast over your channel. It isn't terribly deep and the shuffled phrases for each movie or show's plot make very little sense, but it is fun to imagine what those ingredients could be when you pen the title. The major flaw of Empire TV is that it never feels like you're building something cohesive. You can choose a genre like Comedy or Science Fiction and try to establish yourself as the best version of that, but the game will eventually give you blocks of an audience that isn't receptive to that genre. Ultimately you have to have a small rotation of decent filler programs for those blocks of non-typical viewers to keep your ratings up and ads selling. I would have liked it to be a more targeted channel where your choices matter more. The people behind this game seem to align with my own age group, as there are many direct references to movies and shows that are so specific in their era it is hard to think people half my age would even pick up on them. Anyone much younger might not have experience with scheduled programming like older TV stations anyway. While it isn't my favorite game, it is one I keep coming back to for a few hours at a time. I like the scheduling of the different programs and the limited creativity of making movies and shows. It always leaves me wanting a bit more by the end, but it is good enough for a rainy afternoon.

100 hours in, I've realised I owe this game a review. It's simple but satisfying. The trial and error stage as you learn the rules can be frustrating, but you can mostly skip it (if you want to) by consulting these two guides: - the audience guide at https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1577166146 - the movie production guide at https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=585307229 The core gameplay loop is addictive. The minigame where you have to find the best site for your antennas (as shown in the fourth picture on the Store page) is irritating, but it only interrupts the game about three times in a normal playthrough and takes about 5-10 minutes each time. The game is deeply cozy and nostalgic. You don't have to hurt anyone, and there's no heartbreak. Your goal is to make audiences happy! Depending on the RNG, you'll get to program lots of your favourite TV shows and movies and anime from years ago. There are jingles and vivid colours. I pulled several all-nighters at uni playing this game. I'd stay up until 7 when the shops opened and I could go buy brownies. The English winter nights were long and cold, but this game was bright and warm. I'd like to thank the devs for that comfort, though I really did come very close to failing my degree!

I've probably spent more time playing this game than I should have, but if it's fun is that such a bad thing? The play loop is addictive and you're constantly trying to be the best studio by putting on the best programming. I highly recommend playing it in the base form but also adding some mods from the community later on. Both have their fun points, whether it be a spoof or a full poster and actual movie or show, this game can keep you playing because you are trying to build your audience either by specializing in a genre for one particular audience or a variety of programming to get some happy viewers. There are also so many fun nods and homages in there, you just have to see for yourself.
