This game is a ton of fun. Not sure why there is negative reviews. I guess if you are a fan of the first one, it's a bit different, but nonetheless its a fantastic game. Great multiplayer, very challenging. Has all the best features of a survival strategy roguelike, with towers. Whats not to like.
I absolutely ADORED Dungeon of the Endless. It is by far still one of my favored games... This definitely loses the style, taste, atmosphere, aesthetic, quality, and artistic qualities of the first game. I am quite sad that none of the original characters had made their way into the second game. I was looking forward to seeing my favored characters redone with more art, voicelines and possible story lines... but ah well, they likely live a better life in the first game. First, as a sequel to Dungeon of the Endless....abysmal, do not suggest picking this up. 1/10, absolute failure. If I were to pretend that it IS NOT a sequel to Dungeon of the Endless, and pretend that it is entirely its own thing, vaguely stealing some mechanics from Dungeon of the Endless, than I'd give it a 7/10. It is decent and fun... I do not much care for many of the characters, and their random one-liners feel a bit forced and weird, but I can over-look that for fun gameplay, which this is fun enough... I REALLY REALLY wish this had been a genuine sequel, I truly loved the first game, it put me on to Amplitude as a whole, got me into the other Endless games, Endless space, truly peaceful and sublime. Endless Legend, an mountain of creativity and poetic story telling. ( a bit too much creativity as you play with every single DLC active, its a nightmare of active events, pop ups, and ongoing things.) As well as Endless Space 2, which was an amazing sequel that did itself justice and surpassed the shadow of its prior game. I never touched Humanity... I saw it did not fare well, as well, I am much more for the fantasy and sci-fi, a Cid Meiers lookalike does absolutely nothing for me. Oh, Editing this in...lowkey my fault, as I normally skip tutorials...but god... this is by far one of the worst tutorials by far... if I did not greatly enjoy Amplitude in general, and already have a great fondness for the first iteration of this game, I would have given it a negative review for that tutorial experience alone... Overall, if you come here from Dungeon of the Endless, this is not what you want. If you are just looking for a silly twin stick shooter to BS with your friends, than yea, this will do...
Is it a good game ? Yes Is it better then the previous ENDLESS Dungeons ? Nope. And thats why the Steam reviews are harsh on the game. I think people are too harsh on the game game, it is a good game, but it kinda feels 2 steps forward and 1 step backward form the previous game. I guess i can start with the presentation. They did a great job on the transition of 2D to 3D. Graphics are stylized in a good way and in a unique way i did not see before. Kinda cartoonish but with a pastel look. Very intersting look. The music is has good has the previous game and the sound effect are just punchy enough to give you the impact of your guns. The bosses are also a nice addition. They are well designed. Now for the gameplay....The hard part to explain. The good We went from a Tactical/Tower-defense game to a Action/Tower-defense game and i think the shooting part of the game is great. It feels responsive, each gun has different feel to them,etc. I haven't played with friends yet, but if i were too guess, the coop side of the game must be better then the first game. The roguelite part of the game is a welcomed addition. It give some overall progress to the campaign while giving you boost to go just a bit further each time. The characters now have unique abilities. Yes they are less character then the first game, but now, they TRULY feel unique compared to the first game that they were lots of similarities between each character. The Bad and the OK Lets start by the whatever: The story. Its...there. Clearly not the focus.I actually think i prefered the little vignette between characters in the first game. You had truly unique interaction in the first game between floors. Now, the writting feels Marvel-esq or very Borderlands ish, but a bit less cringe. Again, its fine and clearly not the focus. Now, The Bad . The controls for the tactical part of the game is truly bad. I did say its more action then tactical, but you do need to place your characters in certain rooms to get maximum return on each placement. In the previous game, you could tell each character where to go in the map and they would stay there . Now, if you want one character in another room, you have to manually walk him there each time. That's just straight up a downgrade from the first game no questions. This make difficulty spike really annoying to handle and made me not want to do the Drink challenges. The AI of your companion can be annoying. So its not a bad AI, it will suprinsingly dodge almost every AOE attack from ennemies. The problems rises when its time to use ULTS or for them to stay in there room. First, they will never use there ULTS on there own. You have to do that manually. That is fine, but some of them, like the insect character, needs full attention while using it. So you better be sure you other character at the other side of the floor does not have problems. You are busy ulting. Second, the staying in there room. They stay where there supose to be...most of the time. Sometimes, because of pushback, they chase ennemy and change rooms. When this happen, then can then miss ennemies that bypass your choke point. This was not a problem in the first game. Less controls of your stats. You can only have two guns and one trinket and thats it. This means that if you want maximum Wit on your character, better pray that the RNG gods bestow you the good level up upgrades. There is just less micro management on each character, which does fit the approach of an action game, but it does make it so that each run becomes more samey. The game is slower. At first, i thought i was thinking the game was easier, but its just that each run takes WAY more time from the first game and there is more downtime. I think its because the map are much bigger, your characters move slower and the crystal is so slow. Not only it is slow, but you have to move the crystal multiple times in later floors. Add to that that each time you do a research, you have to endure a wave. It make the game much more grindy then the first one. Overall, it is a good game, but with some flaws that make end game content difficult to swallow. I had a great time getting to the Reactor, AKA the end of the game, but i am not inclined to do the drink challenges. Final note: There is a pretty major bug in the game lol. The Core defenses are not disabled when they should be. You have to enable the options in the menu. I did not since it did provide a good challenge and was able to beat the dungeon with those on,but for people struggling, just disable the option. 7/10
Hello Everyone! I don't usually do reviews, but this is an incredible game. There is a unique blend of tower defense, decision making and action. The game is full of fun and unique characters, each one having there own personality and functionality. The unique enemies and decision making you make on your journey through the endless districts create a unique feel each time I play. I hope to see this game continue to get the love it deserves. Amplitude Studious has done an excellent job creating many moments and memories for me.
A great game that is finally at a price point where I can recommend it. If you like swarm defence twinstick games with a bit of roguelike and tower defence spice, this game will be a good time. The game has a single play option, but really is meant to be played with 1-2 friends.
