June 2025
Bought it because it's cheap and the idea of incredibly simple mechanics in a high-stress environment interested me, definitely worth the money. The progression of the story and the adaptation to the situation of the mc are paced really well - I didn't really consider there being any possible notable story aspects when I bought the game, I was under the impression it'd simply be a Test of Perseverance sort of thing where you see how far you can make it with the unspoken guarantee that you will perish in the end, regardless of if you try to fight those odds or not. But I was actually pleasantly surprised and very quickly pulled into the events of the game, the computer documents you find do a really successful and genuinely entertaining job at teasing your interest and gradually revealing the truth behind the events of the outbreak, as well as clearly defining individual motives and allowing you to peek into the minds of the characters, which I hugely love. And Cynte's little remarks do a lot for me as well, I love that he's unapologetic in his self-serving character, and how well it works with the game, seeing as it seems to be a driving factor behind his stubborn persistence to survive. Learning that he mentally already was the first parasite of that lab, seeing how he viewed those working beside him while he had his own goals in mind, and witnessing his plans to manifest his septic arrogance into some evolved super-form that commands deadly parasites to act as an extension of himself - only to have his hubris fall back on him as he is rejected by them, becoming an ever-struggling target because of his ego having led to him being insanely dismissive. The story and character writing of this game is done so incredibly well to follow the game's theme of remaining simple in nature, yet introducing layers of challenges that keep you locked in a state of panic and conflict, to the point that you really can't help but appreciate the bold essence of masochism that lies in its foundation. Putting the writing aside, I love the mechanics and how insanely involved they shove the player into being with each process. It's not a simple "press R to reload", I'm constantly being forced to find little corners that I can escape to, or hoping for the tiniest breaks in the momentum of combat, so that I am able to manually discard of each bullet and refill my weaponry. The game ensures that you're locked in this tight, claustrophobic box of constant panic, trapped in a fight for survival and holding your breath always. I love how instead of feeling relieved when I find a new weapon, I feel this heightened pressure because I know I'm gong to find it difficult to switch between weapons, keep track of my ammo, and manage the different processes for reloading that they each have, AS WELL AS the ambiguity of the availability of ammo in each area. Having to be hyper-aware of all of this - on top of not being allowed to forget the parasite inside of you, that you must keep finding the suppressors for and properly administrating them in a timely and considerate manner, or else you die near-instantly because you got careless or overwhelmed by the other methods of constant panic that the game piles unto of you. I love it so much. You can really tell that a lot of consideration was put into making sure this game felt as real as it could feel. Given this, I really appreciate that the save system is considerate while not being kind, I still have to be mindful of when the last save was, and trying to save whenever it is possible, but it doesn't feel like torture when I die. The diversity in the enemies and how you feel you have to approach them is so fun, ranging from having to stealthily creep through them, while others you have to charge at and hone in on reaction time and precision under pressure. I haven't finished the final boss fight because my laptop keeps bugging out when I try to, but up until then the bossfights have been high-pressure and requiring innovation as well as risk-taking and intuition. You truly don't know what to expect until it hits you, and then you're forced to adapt to it, very fun and rewarding. The crawling around with one arm is awesome, and only highlights how dire and raw the situation actually is. I looove the sounds of the game, Cynte lets out these constant growls of pain that are so visceral and animalistic, further emphasising the ruthless brutality of the environment - his pain is not suppressed at all, he can't take the time to assess his wounds or even to collect his breath or thoughts - he gets bit, stabs himself with the injection, and you immediately carry on struggling. This was made the point even from the beginning of the game - limbs torn off and immediately you cauterise them and move forward. The thought put into making this game as close to how brutal, restless, and relentless that it would be in actuality, if this situation were real, is so awesome and is what makes it so fun and unique. Going into it knowing nothing was one of the best experiences I have had in a while, considering I am often easily let down, this did not disappoint at all.

This game made me hate monkeys that weigh 10 times more than me and rush at me to tear me to shreds. I wish the game lasted longer than two and a half hours.

Its very fun and I give it a 9/10. Endemic mode on the other hand while mostly fun some of the bosses are just stupidly hard. Other than that I give Endemic mode a 6/10

An amazing game, and one of the few I've 100% completed. It's a fun 4-ish hour experience, 2 or so if you're fast, with an extra rogue lite mode with a decent chunk of content. Overall took 8 hours to complete, but I still want to play more. The guns all feel fantastic and serve a unique purpose. The levels are crafted in a way where each one feels different, and most are a unique challenge or test skills you've learned from the previous sections. One of the best indie games I've played, an absolute classic. I should also clarify I beat it on Hardcore 1st try, I never played normal.
