This game walked, so both ETS2 & ATS could run. Today, it's a product of its time, still perfectly playable but everything that's included here (and much more) is already a part of Euro Truck Simulator 2, so it is kind of hard to find a valid reason to go back to this game, because it does everything to a less extent, with less polish than its successor. From historical perspective it's worth trying out I guess, just to see how far the series has come. I played it before my first PC could run ETS2, and have enjoyed it immensely, but I can't see myself returning to it, especially now after playing both ETS2 and ATS. It's good for what it is, but with very limited modding capabilities it just feels outdated. It's not a bad game at all, just outdated, considering more recent SCS Software's releases.

Saving the world? Easy. Creating my own civilization and leading it to world domination? Easy. Catch all Pokémon? Easy. Make my way through hell? Easy. Parking a truck backward? Impossible. Great game though.

Having played ATS and ETS2 hundreds of hours, I can tell you that this game is not that, but something uniquely different and fun. I like the old-school graphics and the vanilla flavor of the game. You don't have to mess with mods and things and can just concentrate on driving and taking cargo from Point A to Point B. I even like the cargo dynamic which lets you pick the cargo and the cities that you want to haul to at a shipper/receiver. Honestly, some of the graphics are better than today's games, and that's saying a lot for a game that is almost two decades old. The map navigation is also more fun because even though you can have an in-cabin map, it doesn't tell you the route with arrows or anything like GPS, so you have to pay attention to the highway signs and the map a lot more. This feels more realistic and an old guy like me enjoys the more ancient aspects of that. All in all 10/10 and for $4.99 you get a fun game.

I played Euro Truck Simulator 2 before hopping onto this game, why? Because the learning curve was too steep for a beginner in ETS2 (at least for me) so I played Euro Truck Simulator (2008) as a stepping stone for ETS2. Compared to ETS2, it's more straightforward, not being as complicated and having the more traditional elements such as linear upgrade paths. The graphics are dated, the gameplay loop gets repetitve faster than ETS2, and there is not many landmarks in the cities so it felt more of a chore than fun after going through the same city multiple times. On the topic of cities, only major cities are included which reflects how dated the game is. Buy it only when you want to prepare yourself for ETS2 or you played it before and want some nostalgia, otherwise go straight to ETS2.
