Before i say anything- you know that feeling that very few games give you. its kinda like butterflies? its nostalgia, mixed with discovery and wonder. I love indie games. sometimes they kind of run together in my memory. They reuse tropes that blend their identity together making it hard to feel like an original experience. Fallen Tear: The Acension does not fall into that category. o my gosh. i have put 70min in and i am in love. The constant reward of discovery and curiosity. I play a lot of metroidvanias. a lot. so far, this game is a masterpiece. everything from the art direction, the voice acting, the combat, the platforming, the level up system. even the placement and design of the dialogue boxes on screen are perfect. The side quests are tight knit and dont feel like a chore. they feel attainable and valuable to your playthrough. I played the demo a few months ago and i knew i would like this game. but holy cow the full experience is so much better than i imagined it would be. I am head over heels so far. I am no game reviewer and dont posses the vocabulary to describe how charmed i am by this game. If you like metroidvania action platformers this game is for you. and you will love it.

I am no where near finished with the game yet but I can already say that this is the best Metroidvania game since Ori. Beautifyl graphics and awesome gameplay.

I don't normally buy early access games, but after trying the demo this was an instant pickup for me. I'm 40+hrs into the game and I'm LOVING every moment of it. It's really fun to comb through every area and find hidden areas that you may have missed the first time running through. The movement feels really fluid and once you get comfortable with parry & dodging, the pacing of combat feels incredible. With some clever use of the mechanics, you can really push the movement and even get to hidden places a bit early which is actually really cool as it takes some finesse with the jumping and pogo effect of the diagonal downward thrust attack. The enemies are enjoyable for each area and themed quite well. While some a bit tougher than others, I didn't feel like any were overly tuned by the time I reached them. The variety of enemy types is quite nice too as some require a more rush down playstyle while others suggest a more tactful approach. The world is large, but once you get a few upgrades it honestly doesn't feel cumbersome at all. Fast traveling spots are decently paced out and feel rewarding to find, especially early on. And even with the zones being large, the in-game tracking system is great QOL for as a completionist. Overall, it's been a great experience so far and I believe you really have something special with Fallen Tear: The Ascension. I'm looking forward the release of the full game!

I really struggled with whether to give this one a thumbs up or thumbs down. In the end, I give it a thumbs up because it has great gameplay, visuals, voice acting, and the exploration is fun. There's also quite a bit of content even in EA. The map is already enormous and apparently only half the size it will be in 1.0. The game does a lot of things really well. But it does have some pretty big issues at the moment. The in-game economy is absolutely terrible. 6 hours in and I still don't have enough currency to even buy my first upgrade for the main character, and I haven't found enough special items to upgrade my companions either. A one level upgrade (out of 5) with your starting companion costs 10 of a very rare resource? And so far, I have.... 1. Okay, I guess. This all adds up to feel like your character gets stronger at an absolutely glacial pace. There's also a lot of backtracking, which is to be expected of a metroidvania, but it's noticeably higher than other games in the genre. Mostly because the game is very vague about where to go next. This would be okay, except they made the horrible decision to make you pay to fast travel. And it's not cheap either. In fact, I would say it's outrageously expensive. One fast travel between two far away points will set you back by over 200 enemies worth of resources (since every enemy drops 2, no matter how hard they are), And I haven't even explored the furthest reaches of the map, so I'm sure it gets even more expensive, but even fast traveling short distances will be 20-30 enemies of grinding. Hopefully they'll patch this soon to make progression a bit faster because this is by far my biggest issue with the game. I think it really has a TON of potential, to the point where I could see it becoming one of the best metroidvanias ever, but it is really getting in its own way a lot right now.

What's this? Do my eyes deceive me? A beautiful looking Metroidvania that doesn't actually try to pi$$ me off through unnecessarily punishing mechanics, but instead lets me focus on combat, exploration, story, and atmosphere? I'm actually quite liking this one. For an EA release this has a lot of polish. The game looks and sounds fantastic. The early game gates many of the stronger combat abilities, which is always a good introduction. Map is... ok. It's not the greatest, but it functions. I like the stagger mechanic. I do wish they had implemented a straight up dash vice a backstep, I'm not a big fan of the backstep but it works. It does have perfect backstep timing as well which allows you to execute a counter, so that's nice. The vibe is really good. It's got this... soft color palette combined with cartoon stylization and an upbeat but still chill music score. The colors are quite good though, which is important to me. The backdrops are great. It's not depressing to play, which is something I really like. Don't get me wrong, some dark Metroidvanias are really great but sometimes I want something that doesn't make me feel like everything is bleak. I'm actually quite impressed overall, this is shaping up to be a great one to add to the Metroidvania collection.
