one of the best, most life changing Hanafuda experiences I've ever had! ... ... oh yeah I nearly forgot to mention there was a 70~ hour long visual novel included too, that was alright I suppose.

Fate/hollow ataraxia is definitely a fandisc. It gives you another 30 to 50 hours to hang out with all your favorite characters (and Shinji) plus a few new faces, though it sometimes does so by annoyingly reducing them to one-note punchlines. The slice-of-life stuff is mostly alright but occasionally cringe as all hell (the fast-forward button can be a real blessing). Poking around the map for a new scene is fun at first but kind of loses its charm when you just want to progress the story and end up stumbling into yet another fanservice gag scene. The actual plot underneath all the goofing off is genuinely good, which makes the effort to get there feel anywhere between frustrating and tolerable. That said: it's good to see the cast again, a lot of side characters get real content this time, and the new additions are strong across the board. The remaster itself is clean. Visuals are fine and animations punch above the engine's weight in a few spots. Translation is occasionally stilted, but unless your blood pressure spikes every time you read "Altria" instead of "Artoria" you probably won't care. If you enjoyed Fate/stay night and finished all routes so that you can actually understand what the hell is going on, this is worth your time. As long as you're cool with awkwardly hanging out with the cast for hours just to piece together snippets of a sequel.

TLDR: You need to play Stay Night for this to make any sense. You did? Enjoy Peak. You only watched the anime? Enjoy it anyway but you're missing like, 15% of the jokes. My one and only grime that stops me from recommending this to everyone I know is that I don't have the heart to tell anyone "Hey, wanna play this cool VN? It does require reading another VN the length of the new testament though." with a straight face. Can you play this game while only having watched the anime? Maybe. If you watched UBW, Heaven's Feel and the Deen 2006 anime, you might get like, 85% of the experience. But there's plenty of tricks the game does that kind of hinge on being familiar with the Stay Night VN engine and there are also plenty of jokes that hinge on VN only content that are either missed or confusing without context. If you are willing to go through the story of Stay Night in VN format, this game is very much worth your time. It's amazing, it's humor and story is amazing and definitely deserve your money. You have like, 50 to 60 hours of actual content here, and a few minigame extras that can give you a few more if you are interested in squeezing the worth out of each dollar you gave Type-Moon. The game is not a branched story, like it's predecessor, it's a sandbox-like VN where you collect "flags" or key events. The game takes place in a 4 day loop, and the events change based on the flags you collect, with the protagonist re-starting the loop with additional information based on your flags that move the story forward. It might seem slightly confusing at first, but I don't think you'll need a guide at any moment, just keep doing events with a "!" mark or "New" mark and you'll eventually complete everything the game has to offer. Overall, I'd say it's a 9/10 game. The only things holding it back are it's pre-requisite reading being considerable and some slight confusion with the plot around the midpoint.
