Light spoilers, I'd like to think I'm vague enough to pinpoint complaints but not ruin the story for any interested. Lovely game when Misuzu is onscreen. Just alright when she's not. The other two routes of Tohno and Kano aren't without merit. Tohno's execution leaves a lot to be desired. Feels very repetitive. Why Are You This Long. Another critique would be how odd it feels that our MC sticks around, as I felt this thought often during my playthrough, but the theme is clinging on to dreams. This gets a pass as a result. I will suspend my disbelief for 'themes and such' more than not. Michiru is a character I felt bad for, but she was not very interesting to me at all. Tohno herself is cute. Kano is..! short! at least! That scene sure does happen. The wrap up for this one is in a neat little bow, but just leaves me shrugging my shoulders in indifference. Hijiri isn't bad.. I like her!! Kano herself is quite uninteresting. I appreciate that she is not reduced to the tomboy! The sporty one! etc as her looks may suggest. However she is nothingburger. Your reward for completing the three routes is Fine. It's Fine. Cared for the characters well enough for the brevity of the segment, had some ohhh moments. Music is great. Soundtrack is great for the whole game. I quite liked the true ending. I teared up a bit, which is nice. Frankly, I could see myself rereading it and I can't say that about the rest. Not without issue, but I easily understand the 5 stars with it. You will get the most out of it from paying attention to all the past routes as you might expect, so please, tough out Tohno's... If you're like me and get bored asf then LOL please know it's worth it!! Review End. A few general things to note: The story is family focused! But there are some romantic elements. It's an older anime VN, and our MC's age is ambiguous for the most part, but he's clearly an adult. Something to keep in mind if that bothers you! There's so much more to this game than throwaway blushy scenes, and they're small, and I'd hate for anyone to skip this game over it, but nudge nudge, they're there! I know we like to gatekeep and filter newgens or however you want to word it, but I think if you merely anticipate it you can easily opt to just ignore them, while still appreciating this game in it's entirety. It's a product of its time, and you take it for what it is. (Apply this thinking to all 2000s and earlier work and set yourself free) Especially the art. So charming. If you say mean things about the art in this game you die and go to hell instantly. The anime may seem like a good starting point, especially when "the novel is better" is basically the case in the discussion of every adaptation of anything ever. So you want to watch something shorter, get interested, and know that something you liked there will get expanded on here. I see your thought process! However! Highly recommend you watch second, and read the VN first. Never a wrong way to engage with art though, so do whatever fits you best! Spoiler for a singular event here: The fact that after moving out you can ditch walking Misuzu to school is so sad LMFAO and if you do! continue to walk her! She basically says "I don't want to waste your time :')" and Yukito is just like damn okkkk ok you kinda got a point no!!!! grabbing my screen no!!!!!!!!!! Yukito is a bit of a bum and it's for the sake of routes and all but it just made me sad lollll,, you don't have to walk her but reassure her more you ♥♥♥♥..... spent like a week at her house and acting like this. Yukito they're gonna get you. non true route Yukito we gotta take you out. we gotta stick toothpicks under your toenails and make you kick walls..... Yukito come outside we just wanna talk...... Wish I read it sooner, but it hit really hard for where I'm at in my life now. What a lovely experience this was.

AIR is one of those visual novels that doesn’t try to impress through complexity or mechanics, but instead commits fully to mood, structure, and emotional weight. Developed by VISUAL ARTS/Key, it represents an early cornerstone of the studio’s identity—one that would later define much of its work—and even today it feels like a deliberate, carefully constructed experience built around themes of memory, connection, and quiet tragedy. It’s less about what you do and more about what you absorb, with the player serving as a witness to a story that gradually unfolds across different layers of time and perspective. The narrative follows Yukito Kunisaki, a traveling performer searching for a mythical “girl in the sky,” a concept passed down to him through his family. His journey leads him to a quiet seaside town, where he encounters several girls whose lives seem ordinary at first but are tied together by something far more complex. The structure of the story is one of the game’s defining strengths. Rather than presenting a single linear narrative, it unfolds through multiple arcs that initially appear separate, only to gradually converge into a larger, unified story. Each route adds context and emotional depth, and what might seem like isolated character episodes early on becomes essential groundwork for the later revelations. Interaction is minimal, following the traditional visual novel format of reading dialogue and making occasional choices that determine which routes you experience. There are no mechanical challenges, no systems to master, and very little in the way of gameplay in the conventional sense. Instead, the experience is driven entirely by the writing and the player’s willingness to engage with it. This can be a limitation for those expecting more interactivity, but it also allows the game to maintain a strong focus on pacing and atmosphere, guiding the player through its story with precision. What sets AIR apart is its tone and thematic consistency. The game explores ideas of loneliness, inheritance, and emotional burden with a kind of quiet restraint that makes its moments of impact feel more genuine. It rarely relies on dramatic spectacle; instead, it builds its emotional weight through small, personal interactions and gradual character development. Relationships are central to the experience, particularly those that echo across generations, and the story’s structure reinforces the idea that certain feelings and experiences persist over time. This gives the narrative a sense of continuity that becomes more apparent as the different arcs come together. The setting plays a crucial role in reinforcing this tone. The seaside town, with its open skies and warm, almost nostalgic atmosphere, creates a sense of calm that contrasts with the underlying sadness of the story. The imagery of air, sky, and distance is used consistently throughout, giving the game a poetic quality that extends beyond its dialogue. This is further supported by the soundtrack, which is one of the most memorable aspects of the experience. The music shifts between gentle, reflective pieces and more emotionally charged compositions, often carrying scenes in a way that amplifies their impact without overwhelming them. Visually, AIR reflects its origins, with character designs and backgrounds that are relatively simple by modern standards. However, this simplicity works in its favor, allowing the focus to remain on expression and tone rather than detail. Updated versions improve clarity and add voice acting, which helps bring the characters to life and enhances key moments. The presentation may not be technically impressive, but it remains effective in conveying the emotional core of the story. The pacing is deliberately slow, particularly in the early stages. The initial routes can feel episodic, and it may take time before the larger narrative begins to reveal itself. This can be a barrier for some players, as the game requires patience and a willingness to invest in its world before it fully pays off. However, once the connections between the different arcs become clear, the earlier sections gain new significance, and the overall structure feels more cohesive. Despite its strengths, the game is not without its limitations. Some character routes feel less essential than others, and the lack of interactivity may make it difficult for certain players to stay engaged throughout its runtime. The storytelling style, while effective, is also very much rooted in its era, which may feel dated to those accustomed to more modern narrative techniques. These factors do not diminish its impact entirely, but they do shape how it is experienced. Ultimately, AIR is a work that prioritizes emotional resonance over everything else. It is not designed to be fast-paced or mechanically engaging, but rather to create a lasting impression through its themes and structure. It stands as an important example of the visual novel genre’s potential, showing how interactive storytelling can convey complex ideas through atmosphere and character rather than action. For those willing to engage with its pacing and approach, it offers a deeply reflective and memorable experience. Rating: 9/10

i played a little bit of this with a girlfriend in highschool, mostly just watched her play, all i knew about anime adjacent things then was like tokyo mewmew and medabots, then we watched Air together, like a decade and a half ago now. I watched it again by myself a while later along with a bunch of other stuff by Key when i was maybe 17 and ive been very scared to come back to this one, i might always feel a bit broken since Air and Misuzu, then Clannad and Kotomi. im uncertain if im looking forward to the hurt or if ill shy away from it altogether in fear of refreshing thoughts ive since overcome. i havent played enough vns to give an opinion on its quality, but its dear to me enough where im not sure many, if anything compares to the context and timing it was introduced to me, its special.
