♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ So Absolum got me into Beat em Ups, and I've just been loving the deep gameplay of SOR4. This is for people who love the depth of SOR 4 and want even more of it. It's extremely challenging, but the skill ceiling is HIGH with all sorts of combo potential - Gal and F. Norris are both brilliantly realized characters with near-fighting game levels of execution potential. (Haven't played with the Heavy, but I'm sure he's great too). Oh, and if you execute a sick enough combo string, the enemies explode in a very satisfying animation for extra points. There is a great training mode (which must be unlocked- but it's cheap to do) that shows you the per-character combos a la SOR 4, and each character has a 'secret move' ... so much goodness. The parry is an awesome but tricky to use defensive maneuver- while you can parry anything, it's often much safer to defend some other way. But situationally, it's a great way to open up a tough defensive opponent if you get their timing. You can also dodge horizontally AND vertically (relative to lanes), so you've got all kinds of options once you're quick enough. It is not easy. The lowest difficulty (that you start with), Normal, will require many, many retries for most of us (you checkpoint each stage). But as you get better, the stages go down easier, and it's oh-so satisfying. Not for casuals probably, but this is a top tier beat-em-up if you like a challenge. (There is an unlockable easy mode, but if you're going to complain about having to unlock easy mode... maybe not for you)

I think this is my favourite beat 'em up. It's incredibly well made, with a really satisfying and crunchy combat system that deserves replaying over and over to really learn properly. I love the aesthetic, love the graphics, love the music, and I love the gameplay. Yeah I love it, one of the best games I've played in years.

Beating up the furries in this game feels oddly cathartic… until they squad up like an angry cuddle pile and absolutely wreck your ass. It’s a bittersweet cycle: rage, regret, repeat. You’ll curse the screen, question your life choices, then boot it up again five minutes later because pain has never been this fun. PS:. Playing this game on the Steam Deck is DE-LI-CIOUS.
