This made me love beat-em-ups - It's a fair and challenging game with amazing mechanics, okay story, banging music and cool visuals! I haven't beaten the game for first few hours, I took time to practice all those crazy combos for each characters (tho I main my boyo Ricardo), I took time to understand patterns of enemies, and I'm making this review after beating it on Hardest difficulty without using continues, it took time, effort, careful movement, but it's so incredibly satisfying to achieve It's a must have for people who like beat-em-ups, and up to 3 people multiplayer it's just so much fun, recommending all the way!
Finally finished a 1cc on unfair difficulty as of writing this I'm truly blown away. Challenging enemies, engaging encounters, distinguishable balancing across different difficulties, fun combo system, great/rewarding scoring system, multiple pathways that lead to different endings, absolute banger soundtrack, this game really has everything I could want in a beat 'em up. I really enjoyed how purposeful they made the combos, allowing you to get extra points if you continue comboing an enemy after they're dead. The scoring system saved my life more times than I can count. Learning to chain combos on large mobs of enemies to stack up points so that you can gain extra lives was one of the most rewarding things to learn during my time with this game. Extra modes are perfect for that too, the score attack mode teaching you how to optimize attacks in order to rack up as many points as possible, the time attack mode teaching you to properly save powerups for the toughest parts of an encounter, survival mode forcing you to figure out enemy attack patterns without spamming special attacks to barely scrape by after each encounter, all of it is just so well done. I love all 3 of the characters in this game, though I've used F. Norris more than any of them, I love Gal's combo potential and her agility. I can appreciate that Ricardo feels more like a more classic approach to the genre, relying on chaining i-frame based throws to do lots of damage and crowd control for people that might not vibe with the more combo-based gameplay. The game even gives different rates of resistance to throws on certain enemies and minibosses, which can kind of signify what the game wants you to focus on. They even have different numbers needed to reach to get an S Rank on each of the extra modes, which I thought was a really good way to take into account the strengths and weaknesses of the different characters. I do think Level layouts and their general design could be a bit more varied. Not looking for anything as overly gimmicky as the raft level, but something like a train level from streets of Rage 4, the bulldozer from 3, or the conveyer belt level from Spikeout. Hell, even just throwing in a bottomless pit here and there to throw enemies into. Imagine if after the final boss with the burning building, you actually have to fight your way out with a timer that has less time than general timer they use in the game to create a sense of urgency. It'd help encounters feel more distinct and memorable, and would present some more unique challenges outside of just the enemies themselves. Outside of that though? This game is a blast. I loved every second of learning its ins and outs. I truly feel Fight n Rage is essential to your library if you are a fan of beat 'em ups, as it ranks pretty high up in my all time list for the genre.
