The third and final part of the FF7 Remake trilogy just got a release date at the time of writing this review and this will inevitably shine some spotlight on the original with people wondering whether or not it's worth picking it up before (or after) playing the remakes. So treat this review as a FAQ of sorts. Can I just skip it and go straight to the Remake trilogy? Yes and no. The FF7 Remake Trilogy is very meta about being a remake: it treats the original game's events as a sort of canon and then makes it a point within its own story to sometimes deviate from that canon. The closest analogy I can think of is the multiverse trend from the superhero comic books and movies — the Remake Trilogy is essentially a "What If?.." spin on the original FF7. However, it's also fairly obvious that Square Enix doesn't actually expect everyone to have played the original FF7, and thus the remakes end up staying truthful to the original in almost all the major story beats. All in all, the Remake Trilogy can absolutely be enjoyed without having played the original, but because it's often indulgently self-referential it may be worth playing through this classic anyway, if nothing else you might get a kick out of finding out that a 30 second moment from the original game was turned into a whole level in the remakes (they do this constantly!) Is this game difficult? The combat itself is not particularly difficult — the game is fairly generous with resources, you can heal very often via a spell available almost immediately that's quite cheap to cast and if you're somehow struggling you can always just stand near a resting point that will replenish your HP/MP and simply farm enemies to level up. That being said, the true difficulty of FF7 lies in its very outdated JRPG sensibilities circa '97. Often times the game doesn't communicate clearly where to go, places permanently missable upgrades in hidden spots, can withold a save point for just a little too long and can generally feel a bit janky and unwelcoming if you're only used to playing polished modern games with lots of quality of life features. This specific version provides a couple of additional toggles meant to simplify the gaming experience: 1. Autosave on the world map — useful but be aware that the map itself is not always accessible so save often (also make sure you don't use a single save slot for everything) 2. Invincibility mode — you'll get healed and get to have a turn in combat whenever you like, perfect if you're just here for the story and aren't at all interested in the combat 3. Disabling of random encounters — turn this on if you don't want to get ambushed in locations or on the world map, though do be aware that key story battles actually don't happen that often so relying on them alone will not be enough to keep you leveled up sufficiently. I recommend only keeping this permanently on if you're already using the Invincibility mode, in which case random encounters will only be an annoying interruption. Otherwise, this comes in handy as a temporary toggle for when you're low on HP/MP or just really not in the mood to get into another trivial combat instance. 4. 3x Speed — perhaps the best QoL addition on the list, speeds up the game significantly as some of those old timey animations do take a while to play out. All of those can be toggled on/off with a press of a button, you don't have to go to the pause menu for that every time. Smart usage of these toggles can make the somewhat outdated gameplay a lot more bearable for those who aren't used to playing retro games. I also recommend looking up guides for this game online if you feel stuck and don't know where to go — plenty of spoiler-free high quality walkthroughs exist since, you know, it's been almost 30 years since its release. Are the graphics bad? Honestly, see for yourself. It may be helpful to treat the low-poly PS1 graphics as a stylized aesthetic rather than a literal attempt at realism. That being said, the pre-rendered backgrounds can be very atmospheric at times — sure, the resolution is low but it's clear that they were drawn with vision and passion that are difficult not to appreciate. The character models are also a bit unserious, you could even say chibi-like but they have their own charm too — FF7 is a little bit goofy and for better or worse, remakes double down on that goofiness so if you want to enjoy the franchise you might as well get used to everyone looking (and acting!) a bit cartoonish. Is the story actually good? This is a very subjective thing to answer but I'll try. The core themes and emotional stakes hold up incredibly well to this day, and the overarching plotline about a greedy megacorporation draining the planet of its lifeblood to sell as energy to the working class that it continuously oppresses is about as relevant as it gets given the current state of the world affairs. However, don't expect deep, multi-paragraph dialogues that are prevalent in modern AAA RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077 or Kingdom Come 2. The characters mostly speak as much text as can fit in small blue boxes that were meant to be displayed on a CRT screen. The translation is serviceable enough but also a bit stiff, with characters often using turns of phrase that don't really make sense in English language. Dialogues aside, the game's story itself also feels very jRPG, especially in the final act, where key revelations stack up a little too fast and too contrived, but the same thing can be rightfully said about every other Final Fantasy game as well as many Japanese media in general where vibes and tropes almost always take precedence over script coherence. It is what it is. What about the gameplay depth? FF7 does have a fair bit going on for it, the Materia system allows for very granular customization and progression of spells you can assign to any character, there's lots of things to collect for completionists (but again, I'd really recommend using a guide here), there is a relatively huge world map you get to explore (though it does take a while to get to the point where you can freely move about wherever you please) and even some endgame bosses that take a fair bit of strategy and high end gear to defeat. 100%-ing FF7 can run you upwards of 80 hours if you're willing to grind for it and many do find the process enjoyable enough to justify those hours! There's also a surprising amount of mini-games of various complexity and quality, something the remakes take and run with even further. There's a race, an RTS battler, arcade, motorbike chase, a submarine battle and many more! Some are weird and clunky, some are genuinely fun and even impressive if you realize that this was all crammed into a single game back in the 90's. In conclusion Final Fantasy VII is considered by many to be the first true AAA game: its production scale and budget were almost unheard of at the time and it elevated the Final Fantasy franchise to unprecedented levels of success. Even the original game aside, there is plenty to enjoy in the universe around it: the excellent prequel Crisis Core (it got an a very nice remaster a few years ago!), the sequel movie Advent Children , the amaz— Okay, well, I can't say anything good about a gacha game but there is a FF7 gacha called Ever Crisis if you're prepared for the relentlessly anticonsumer monetization of that game. And the remakes, of course! They have their own issues but nevertheless are generally extremely well-received and engaging with the universe of FF7 can greatly enhance the experience of playing them. The original game is an iconic, heartfelt, silly and occasionally uncooperative piece of gaming history but it's not impossible to enjoy it if even if you're only used to playing modern games. I highly recommend you give it a chance — you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

seems better than the 2013 port so far because it doesn't make you create a square enix account to play, and it actually shows your keyboard controls in the dialogue instead of controller prompts for a controller you don't have. will update if theres any big glitches

This game had me immersed. Each of one of the crew is likeable and full of character. The story of the game has never been truer than it is today, seeing how the Avalanche doesn't just sit around and wait for things to get better, but try to fix it themselves -no matter the method- is inspiring. I hope I can muster up the courage to blow up a data center too.

Recommended, with caveats. This runs much better on my Steam Deck than the previous (2013?) edition of FF7. That's why I chose to start a new play through with this latest version, instead of sticking to my old save games with many hours accumulated. I did not experience a single freeze or crash the whole time. Unfortunately, while fighting around the world map and certain scenes where there's a lot of FMV-style background animation (the Northern Crater's final areas) there is a significant amount of slowdown when you don't have the 3X speed booster on. It seems like the game runs about 33-50% slower in those areas, but this effect goes away when you activate the booster. Other than that, I had no problems. Controller compatibility was infinitely better--no more fiddle-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with rebinding PS4/360 controls to keyboard commands, or any of that nonsense. No more worrying about whether my game will suspend and be jacked up upon waking up my Deck, causing a loss of progress. No more crashes or freezes in any way. I'll take that tiny bit of slowdown in lieu of all those problems, even if it is not ideal. On that note, Square should really let the modding community have a crack at fixing this in an official. They're honestly the resident experts, they have more passion than anyone else in the world, and they've been tinkering with this title for decades.

They patched the battle fps same day. So far excellent update. Happy to have the PS4 version on steam finally. Excellent to have fixed facial animations and the added QOL features.
