It's hard to say if I recommend this game or if I don't. This game is not like the WWE games, which is a good thing, not everything should be the exact same. That being said, if I said this was probably the most unintuitive gameplay I've played, and I've played a lot of wrestling games of different kinds. This game is simulation based, not like how current day WWE games are, but rather your goal is to put on a good performance, not beat the other guy. This is alright, but not exactly ideal. You have no HUD to tell what's going on. You have to watch your health, breathing and spirit. The problem is that you have no clue what's being done, there's no HUD. I have no idea other than visual indicators that don't show up unless you're standing still. This is something I'd expect from an old wrestling game, and Smackdown Just Bring It is one of those old games that I love that didn't have a proper hud either. When things like that are something to be aware of and manage, you have to just assume and make sure what's going on. Performing moves is also annoying. I believe that what you have to do is time it correctly, but the annoying thing is that counters are automatically done. If you don't do it correctly, countered. Thing is, that messes things up even more because it's difficult to consistently do. I'm sure with time I could figure it out but I find wrestling games that are easy to pick up, play and understand is more important than doing all of that. It's a bit more complex than it needs to be. That being said, if you want to just simulate matches, this is a REALLY good way of doing so. Just let CPUs run the match and things will work out really well in your favor! It's actually fun to watch things go the way they do because you have a lot of customization. I think the customization can be confusing and a bit too much (as in there's so much redundant stuff to look at and you will spend probably a LONG time there) but it can very well worth the time. Sadly while creating wrestlers and moves are the best thing you got. You can't really customize arenas, wrestler voices, or do a lot of different match types. I find this one to be weird, you don't get a lot of choices for match types. You can modify rules to get something close but there is a lot of missing special matches. There's a boxing and MMA mode but I didn't really find them that engaging and for the boxing mode, you really need to make characters built for that which is annoying, especially since the way the game works, a LOT of moves make the opponent fall over which isn't how boxing works. I don't really care for barbed wire and landmines personally. Another thing I don't like is that I wish you could turn off blood or have no referees, you can kinda get away with it using invisible stuff or hiding all the sprites. I have nothing against blood in wrestling games, but usually unless I'm playing a story mode or if I'm in the mood for it, I keep it on. Usually, I prefer the blood to be off because personally I think blood are better for storytelling matches. However I REALLY wish blood was a toggle because everyone bleeds too much and way too easily, and to make matters worse, moves are set to cause blood no matter what, which is super weird when a wrestler starts bleeding early into the match. Also refs always bleed when they get knocked down which is not great. The game has a strong base, but relies heavily on customization, which is fine. I think I'm a bit hypocritical as I think there's too much and too little customizations in different areas. Here's where things get interesting though, the game REALLY improves with mods. The mods allows for more match types and features, I was also able to block blood from happening even on moves that ALWAYS causes blood to happen. I basically broke it but it works. Mods also allows for more unique arenas and even make up more matches. I found some pretty fun stuff in there, it's moreso made for those who really like the rough side of wrestling and having more control over things. It's really good, really easy to set up, and really opens up the game. I strongly encourage looking into it if you get the game, it basically opens up more opportunities than what the base game gives. One more final critique though, this game has way too much DLC. Get this game on sale, same with the DLC. Some of the stuff that's DLC is a really dumb choice. especially for a game that is usually at $30 for base stuff. You need the parts craft to really see what made the game good and use the workshop. Everything else is pretty much optional and the move craft is free. It's a bummer because it does not need all that pricing. I did get the entrance craft but it's silly how THAT is also paid. It's a basic part of the game, cmon. Looking back on what I said and how much time I've spent on it so far. If you only get the base game without the parts DLC and no modding, I wouldn't recommend it. If you include those two, you'll get so much more value on it. The game is on sale often, so if you want the game, wait for it and the DLC for a reduced price and get the modpack to really get the most out of this game. You will be customizing a lot, so enjoy the process!
Learning curve, clunky UI, and greedy DLC practices persist, yet this remains a top 5 graps game, ever. The community has so, so much in the way of customization on offer. You can transform this thing into your most well-rounded wrestling game you'd ever need. I have the rosters of WWE past and present, ECW, WCW, RoH, CMLL, so on and so on and so forth. It's systems in terms of gameplay do not fail to impress either, the wide variety of moves even in the base game is more than admirable. It is clunky and uneven, but when it works, it remains the best wrestling game on this platform.
I mean, the reputation of this franchise speaks for itself. Rarely does a game exist that encourages just OBSERVING the art of not just professional wrestling, but video game professional wrestling. I don't know anything about actually playing this game other than setting up a dream world in my head and then seeing it exist and play out before my eyes, and somehow.....Fire Pro has figured out that equation and how to make not just entertaining, but completely addictive. I also be remiss if I didn't mention just how mod friendly this game is, and how talented it's users are. Accurate and custom music for every wrestler? You got it. Complete customization of outfits and entrance attires? You bet. WWE wishes it could put out a game this good. Please let these developers do something with the NFL or NBA license. There is so much money being left on the table with that.
