I can't say this is a bad game, so giving it an outright negative review feels too harsh, but it's also a weak recommendation. This game makes me wish there was a "meh" option. I did play it through to the end though, so I feel compelled to leave a review. However, it will sound mostly like criticism. Flintlock is at heart an aggressively average souls-like game where you are tasked with hunting down the gods to end an army of the undead. Even typing it sounds generic. The game is fairly well made, doesn't have any game breaking bugs that I encountered except one crash, and follows the exact same formula you're expecting as far as save points, regenerating enemies, and a recoverable lost-on-death currency that's used to upgrade your character and weapons. You find weapons and armor pieces that grant synergies and special effects. You upgrade a skill tree. You have a healing flask. Your gun interrupts heavy attacks. It's all pretty standard for this style of game. Combat feels a little faster and more "action-adventure" style than others in the genre, which can sometimes feel like controlling a heavy puppet. Unlike the actual souls games, this game does have the "modern game UI" benefits such as a map, quest markers, actual quests that make sense, and most conveniences you've come to expect from modern games, but whether that's really a benefit or not is up to you. While you do find alternate weapons and armor, it doesn't really seem to serve much point. The weapons all feel incredibly similar but just have some slightly different status effects going on. You never really feel a strong sense of customization. The quests feel pretty basic and while the world has some pretty locations, it mostly feels like things you've seen in games before. Character dialogue, especially during fights and exploration is largely super generic, predictable, and repeated often. For example, when fighting the undead, your character (Nor) uses the line "And stay dead!" Yeah. There's not a ton of lore or depth to be had in the world, and it feels like a missed opportunity. I think the developers really could have made this a much more interesting world if they fleshed it out a bit more, but mostly it feels shallow. Combat is overall okay. It gives you a lot of different options to work with, but you'll likely find yourself falling back on the same standard options which work fine. It's awkward to cycle through items mid-combat to switch between healing and thrown grenades. So what does this game get right? Your companion: Enki. He's the little fox-chicken guy you see in the marketing. You meet him shortly after the start of the game, and the growing relationship and interplay between Enki and Nor is probably the only thing that kept me interested. In a game where most conversations seem stilted and dull, theirs seem to breathe more life into the world and characters. Still, even that's not without some shortcomings. There are a more than a few moments which would work well as in-game cutscenes, but are instead played out with characters all just standing motionless talking to each other. It feels like a missed opportunity. Still, it's a much more approachable souls-like with difficulty settings, and it goes on sale often enough. I probably won't be back to play this one again, but it might hit just right for someone else.

Fun game. Doesn't do anything particularly new or earth shattering, but it combines enough mechanics we've grown familiar with and does them all well enough to build a solid game. Roughly 20 hours to complete, and overall recommend.

Coming from a fan of Ashen, previous A44 game, it was the biggest pleasure playing their latest project. The hate towards this game comes from 2 different kinds of people. 1. Radical monkeys saying it is a woke DEI game 2. Jobless tryhards who think that if the game is similar to Dark Souls - it is bad because it is not Dark Souls. The only so-called "woke" thing in this game is that we are playing a black female character that has zero to none muscles. How come these real gamers did not struggle playing Tomb Raider with a small woman as the MC? How come these real gamers did not struggle with playing as Ellie in The Last Of Us? Oh, she grew in the world of pain and is filled with hate? The main character here has the same type of struggle, seeking revenge and filled with hate and righteousness. Speaking of the second type of haters, it does not try to be Dark Souls, it has a biiiig pile of mechanics that make the game exceptionally fun to play. Think of Batman Arkham games, you can technically complete all Batman games by pressing leftclick, but it is not fun, fun comes from mixing up the strategies with ingame unnecessary mechanics. You can double jump, dash, use a rifle, a pistol, melee weapons with different animations for different purposes, grenades with different effects and you have A PET GOD that aids you in your journey. Different "ultimate" abilites can be used for different playstyles, combinating the attack of this god with yours can grant you additional vampirism, stun effect and more. There more than plenty abilities for you to enjoy with the skill tree the game grants us. Clingy movement? Have you seen your oh-so-cherished Dark Souls? IT IS THE SAME, LITERALLY, what does stand apart is the way story is present and how the characters are written. It is common knowledge that story should be hidden and vague in this genre, here, the vagueness still exists, but the story is clear, understandable and has some very interesting twists that are being presented via visual storytelling like exploring temples, listening to villagers at the camp and talking to the God by your side. What I really enjoyed is the connection between the MC and the god. Some extremely enjoyable dialogues are presented mix with lurid, hilarious and personal topics. There is enough content in this game to chew on, more than 15 sidequests that are mostly "go kill the thing", but souls like games literally have the same thing. Unlike them, Flintlock mixes it up a bit, instead of destroying the army, you challenge a warrior for a duel, thus you have a bossfight. The world itself is extremely enjoyable to roam with sound design, and music standing out. A44 is really good at making you feel cozy at the safe spots and making you lock in outside of it. The game was rather challenging on the hard difficulty with bosses being menacing and truly hard to beat by the end of the game, even with nearly maxing out my character. Please, do not listen to the hate, it is a great project, give this game a real chance. A well deserved 7.5/10

Never have I ever ..had such a hard time giving a game a recommendation, and although I’m giving this a thumbs up, I'll explain my neutralness by giving you 3 reasons for and against purchasing Flintlock and letting you, dear player, decide on your own. 3 reasons to avoid FLINTLOCK Sebo - A startling number of NPCs are down to play some Sebo.. and I get it: the devs are trying to instill the sense of an expansive, lived-in world by implementing an addictive mini game similar to the S Generation Final Fantasy games or The Witcher 3. Problem is, shoving coins around a board in a bizarre re-imagining of Tic-Tac-Toe ain’t exactly on par with Gwent, my dudes. Also, if that’s what you seek to emulate, presumably you’ve played Gwent right? By any chance DO YOU REMEMBER THE MUSIC IN GWENT!? Absolute bangers, every track. Maybe try that here, might work to evoke some sort of emotion better than dead ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ silence. FOR THAT MATTER: The Music - Where is it? We occasionally get some intense hybrid combat themes during tough fights and boss encounters–which supplement the combat very well–but the rest of the game we get little more than a droning synth pad underscoring every environment. Doesn’t matter where you are: The jungle, the mountains, a desert, a town, a city, or down by the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ river, everywhere sounds exactly the same and no location has a distinct feel because of it. I can hear the sound team now saying “Well we took a note from Dark Souls and Elden Ring’s implementation and kept it subtle” but that doesn’t mean rob the player of every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sonic joy in the game! Give me a welcoming, melodic town theme or something soothing and warm when we’re gathered around the campfire(just like, oh I dunno, FIRELINK SHRINE). Third act/ending - The whole third act of the game feels rushed and a bit underdeveloped with a frustrating final boss fight. If you’re a close-range fighter, be sure to get some distance from the boss during his third phase so you can actually see the button prompt to end the game. And once you do that, the game -can’t wait- to end. About two lines of dialogue and 8 seconds after the final button input, smash to credits(again with no significant musical sting or fanfare). They couldn’t wait to be done. 3 reasons to purchase FLINTLOCK A worthy souls-like but this time with ACROBATICS - Remember in Dark Souls when jumping was the worst? This game says “♥♥♥♥ that, let’s have a souls-like with plenty of dodge jumping and jump dodging and double jumps and jump jiving and juking all over the place! Stamina Bar? Get rid of it! Nothing’s slowing this ♥♥♥♥♥ down!” The only other souls-like games to even come close to empowering the player with this much speed and alacrity were Jedi Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor.. and they were about a Jedi! City of Writ - Something I found particularly effective and refreshing in a souls-like: In the city of Writ, enemy guards are spread among the townsfolk, effectively recreating The Matrix’s Agent Training Program and making it much more difficult to spot an enemy ahead of time and when and where an attack will occur. I’m hard-pressed to contrast or compare it to anything similar I’ve encountered in another game and the moment was pretty fleeting, but it was enough to stick with me and I want more of that, please. The “Claiming” mechanic - Do you like to gamble? Do you like to double down on your own skill level and receive rewards for avoiding damage and mastering perfect combat performance? Flintlock’s novel take on rolling combo mechanics pushes that idea forward in an addictive way. For most every action you take in battle, the game tracks a combo percentage on the left side of the screen. Taking a hit will break your combo, but get through a fight without a scratch and you can claim an increased EXP reward based on your current percentage. Feeling good about your abilities? Feeling cocky? Feel free to let it ride, baby, but don’t go whining to the devs when a stray blow robs you of that sweet 150% boost. A fun mechanic, and enough to keep me going for 40+ hours.

ONLY pick this up on deep sale. The story aint "bad" , the gameplay is rough, animations are stiff like many others have pointed out. Not alot of activity in the open world. Side Quest are.. well kinda boring. I started the game.. enjoyed it ALOT for the first 8 hours, I think because I had not played a third person action game in a while.. after that I took a break duo to playing some other games that came out.. came back to Flintlock eventually to finish/contuine.. and THATS when I started to noticed the AA-quality of the game and how other gamers described it being "bad" and "Rough/Stiff" Its still enjoyable and has some content hours if you can pick it up for like €15-20 bucks, but like dont set your expectations anywhere, you would be surprised how fun a game like this can be all of a sudden. The voice acting is also kinda cringe but hence again this also might be because I recently played E33 and thats the best voice acting ever in a video game. The optimization is not perfect but playable. I had some occasional pop ins, fps drops for NO real reason playing on a High End system, it happend random and at other times it ran buttery smooth. [RTX 5080, Frame Gen ON, 1440p, Ultra] Overal I would give this game like a 7/10, NOT bad, NOT amazing either, somewhere in between when you are waiting for other games to come out or pick up a nice Steam Sale.
