I quite enjoy the gameplay loop in early game, however, midgame to endgame can get a bit boring. It is fun until you plan out your whole town. For me this took a few playthroughs. I had to force myself to finish all the specialists. Frankly, I wasn't interested in the Doctor, the Seagull person or the Aquaculturist so it took me awhile to motivate myself to get them. I ended the game around Day 280, but I couldn't be bothered to continue until Day 365 for the achievement. Pros: Not too difficult, Relaxing, Building stuff and dismantling stuff is fast and you get back all your resources. Cons: Can get repetitive. Certain areas such as the polluted towns can get a tad annoying to manuveur if your town is too big. Rotating the town feels clunky. Characters look stupid. I wouldn't say there is a lot of replay value here but it was fun while it lasted.
Flotsam is a really good game that surprised me in the best way. The mechanics are smooth and easy to get into, but still offer enough depth to keep things interesting. It’s one of those games where you can just sit back, relax, and slowly build up your little floating town without feeling stressed. The management side is especially well done everything feels intuitive, and balancing resources is satisfying rather than frustrating. It strikes a nice balance between being engaging and calming at the same time. Honestly, I’d highly recommend it. It’s the kind of game you pick up for a short session… and then suddenly realize hours have passed. Super addicting in a good way.
Very cute and fun little colony builder. Challenge is appropriate for people like me who love colony builders but suck at the complex late game stages of other titles. I managed to finish it without ever really getting into trouble, even though I usually throw in the towel halfway through most other colony sims, so don't expect hyper complex resource fine tuning or anything. + Cute graphics + Decently long campaign (took me just over 20h) + Pretty cozy ~ Quite easy
I came across Flotsam very early in its prolonged early access development. While it took a very long time for the game to come out, I did get to experience numerous gameplay iterations and generally found enjoyment in all of them. I was mainly attracted to the game based on its art and aesthetic style and cozy “waterworld survival” concept that made it feel like a casual version of Rimworld. I was glad to see the specialist quests and end-game content finally added but wish it had come sooner, but I understand that this was made by a small studio. Pros: Very colorful, cartoonish visual aesthetic never gets tiresome. Gameplay is very simple and easy to pick up and understand. Things I'd like to see improved: In all of the game's versions, there has been no ability to manually assign drifters to tasks. Instead you can set their task preferences but you're generally stuck waiting to see who will show up for a task once it's assigned. Resource management and crafting can get extremely burdensome as the game progresses, with the end-game loops feeling extremely repetitive and time-intensive. Audio is very limited. It would be nice to have some kind of soundtrack rather than just the occasional twangy banjo chords and strums.
