Open FireWarrior.exe in a hex editor (HxD is free). Find -> Replace. Replace all instances of gamespy.com with openspy.net and hey now multiplayer works. idk why the devs didn't do this themselves and ship with functional multiplayer. Hopefully they can do it in a patch. Literally only takes seconds.

Before you buy: This game is terrible. The aiming has mouse acceleration or some kind of janky aim assist and just feels awful to play. The sound design sucks, I don't think you can actually rebind controls and this game is from the era of "Press the ACTION BUTTON to do thing." And I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love it. This game is such a deep part of my childhood. Only buy this game if you know what you're getting into or love old ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games. It is certainly quiet.

This is an extremely faithful re-release, it still has the Gamespy based online mode and no native gamepad controls (despite also releasing on PS2 in 2003) - however it also supports cloud saves and has Steam Achievements! Despite the lack of native gamepad support, the game plays great on Steam Deck once you customize the controls using SteamOS. I shared a controller profile titled 'Steam Deck' if you want to try it. This makes the game very playable. I'm happy this game is on Steam now! I was surprised to see the Marathon logo everywhere in this game.
