A very fun game. Arcadey but it's pretty tight, you can't expect to just wing it on an unknown track. Loooots of content: tracks, cars, teams, seasons. It has a demo. Why are you reading this? Go play a demo instead. Then you can decide if you want it.

TLDR Good with a controller, great with a wheel General comments This review is relevant as of the 1.4 patch. This game is an arcade racer with chibi-style graphics and, surprisingly, many sim elements (chibisim?) that blend together really well to make a good racing game that is well worth the money. Nevertheless, the game has its idiosyncrasies, especially in the way controllers work. This means that I can't recommend it unreservedly if you play with a controller. Despite the oddball controller behaviour (more on this later), it's a really fun game. If you're an F1 fan and enjoy driving games, I would strongly recommend it. The review will look at the game in three ways: The good, the bad and the meh. The good The setting This is an unlicensed game, which means that you won't see real team names, driver names, or fully accurate liveries. Nevertheless, you will know who Luis Hammerton is, just as you will recognise (my personal favourite) Batteri Voltas . The Spoonerist puns are real. There are mods available which give you accurate driver and team names, as well as more accurate liveries. Despite the lack of licensing and the chibi aesthetic, the game captures the feel of the different generations really well. The performance of the cars is clearly different between eras, while the graphics filters (which you can change to your preference) give a clear visual identity to each period. The time settings also serve as the backbone to the story mode, which takes you through each generation while also serving to unlock recognisable cars and drivers for the next era. I chose to do the story mode in time order. I've not yet finished the career mode at the time of writing - I'm just starting the '90s - which should give you some idea of the considerable amount of single-player content. I'm 20-odd hours in and haven't yet touched a DRS button. The on-screen display widgets for information like gear, speed and revs also reflect the era, with more modern seasons using more modern graphical conventions. You have to turn many widgets on in the options. This is a really nice visual garnish which reflects the devs' commitment to a rounded game - they didn't have to do it. The tracks There are an increasing number of tracks available as the game progresses. You start with a limited number of 'classic' tracks - Spa (Ardennes GP), Silverstone (Old Prestige GP), Monza (Temple of Speed GP), Dark Forest (Nürburgring Nordschleife) and Monaco (Riviera Streets). As the game isn't licensed, the tracks all have slightly different layouts to their originating designs. However, they are very well laid-out and more than simply resemble the tracks they emulate, really capturing the 'feel' of the originals. I really like the legacy Monaco track - it's wicked fun going as fast as you possibly dare on a claustrophobia-inducing street track with raised pavements that will punt you into the wall the moment you get too greedy. Bravo to the devs for this - it's really well done! Later eras introduce tracks we all know and love - the Hungaroring (Magyar GP) and Suzuka (Cherry Blossom GP) are the latest two I've unlocked. Input devices - racing wheels I can't say definitively, but I suspect that a controller will always be inferior to a dedicated wheel. I discuss controller input later. Here, I will gush about just how great this game is with a wheel. Using a wheel in this game is incredible, even transformative. In first-person with a wheel, you can absolutely nail corners and - once you have the wheel dialled in - dive through high-speed corner complexes in a way that I can only describe as dazzling. It feels absolutely amazing when you nail the 7-corner complex after the Kemmel straight on Spa (Ardennes GP) and come onto the home straight with your throttle planted and your nose pointing straight at the 100m marker board at the hairpin. Wheel input in this game is just brilliant, and I don't want to go back to a controller. The only caveat I will give for the controls is that setting the pedals and the steering axis up isn't especially intuitive: None of the wheel options are explained in-game. For instance, there is a 'gamma' setting for the analogue axes but there are no tooltips or notes which tell you what they do. After playing about with the gamma setting, it seems that it controls the responsiveness of the axis - a value lower than 1 will make the centre of the wheel respond more slowly, with a stronger response at higher deflections. Conversely, values higher than 1 do the opposite - the centre is more responsive while the higher deflections are less responsive. My wheel works on both Windows and Linux with no issue. The bad Input devices - controllers I've seen a lot of criticism for the game's handling, with reviewers complaining about what they perceive as input lag when using a controller. The model is certainly unique. I believe it's a hybrid progressive steering model: Regardless of controller deflection, the steering angle takes time to reach maximum deflection. I found that I could adapt to the input style and win GPs, but it never really felt skill-based, and more a matter of luck. With wheel input, however, it is possible to correct a mistake much quicker and therefore lose significantly less time. It is possible to maintain a deflection angle with a controller, but this is difficult and they still feel generally spongy, requiring a quite specific driving style to use effectively. After I switched to a wheel and took an hour or so to dial it in, I was significantly faster, even though I do not regularly play sim racing games. NPC driving standards Apparently, the blue flag doesn't mean anything at all in terms of the expected behaviour of the NPC driver. If they're going to carry on anyway, why show them the blue flag at all? Why notify me of this? At least give me a red shell! The meh UI issues In Time Attack mode, you're often left waiting for the leaderboard to load. The game does note this in the interface, but it's still slow. Track limits I appreciate that this is not a simple thing to manage. However, I've been warned for exceeding track limits on the first corner (high-speed hairpin) on Old Prestige GP when I clearly didn't have all four wheels off the inside of the track. I've been given a track limits violation on Ardennes for clipping the barrier on the inside of turn 1. I've also been rammed by an NPC, pushing me off the track and garnering me a time penalty! Usually, when I get a track limits warning, it's bang to rights. Sometimes, however, I'm left fuming at clear nonsense. NPC behaviour The NPCs are best described as idiots. A lapped driver will ignore the blue flag. In wheel-to-wheel battles, the NPC will sometimes decide that their honour will be preserved if they die as we crash. Edit - 4/4/2026 Michael Schumacher drives like an arsehole in Formula Legends too! No multiplayer yet I get that these things take time, but the lack of some form of local/with friends multiplayer is difficult to understand. While the game is remarkable fun as a single-player experience, it would be immensely richer with multi-player modes - I want to fight for championships against my friends and family! Final thoughts This is a really good base for the game. It's an absolute bargain for the price, and seeing active development is good. I understand that multiplayer is still in development, which I am very much looking forward to. I'm hoping for a locally hosted server option so I can play with my friends and family, or at the very least be able to host an ad hoc multiplayer session. Overall, the game is just a ton of fun , something missing from so many games today. If you like the concept, I'd say you should just buy it. Vroom vroom!

While at launch the game was a litlle raw (controls were difficult, AI contacts were bad), all of this has been corrected. Its a fun game rather arcadish but with some interesting twists (should i keep my tires one lap more or change them now but risk to need to change them again if rain come ?) Moreovver it takes the history of F1 starting now in 50s and ending with actual season. The feel is nice, the DLC are getting better and better, the last one is a must ! I spent 50 hours and want to spend moar !! Oh and multiplayer is coming ! And more tracks, and more free stuff ! Go buy it now !

Having thousands of hours in sim racing, I really appreciate what Formula Legends in bringing to the table, personally. And you can tell by a lot of the negative reviews with complaints about handling (from people with minimal time on the game), that they're actually doing something right here...And that's not a jab at anyone or a "git gud" comment. It just means that they aren't doing what your typical "arcade" racer is doing, and there's a more nuanced model to the handling here - one that you'll adapt to perfectly fine if you're coming from any form of sim racing...Proper braking, slow in, fast out is absolutely the name of the game here. I haven't gone deep enough into races yet to determine how things like fuel and tire management work out. Or if there's any real pit strategy to be had...But along with all the other nods to Formula 1, the general aesthetic of the game, and the very decent amount of content already here. I'd highly recommend this game to anyone who wants a racing game with a rewarding learning curve.
