I enjoy it, however. If you are thinking of purchasing this for a portable 4 player CO-OP for steam deck, don't. The steam deck cannot run the game in 4 player CO-OP. You won't even be able to hit 30FPS at lowest possible settings lowest possible resolution with 4 players on screen.
I'm a bit conflicted about this game. I bought it specifically to play on the Steam Deck, and it runs great on the handheld. The gameplay is nice and smooth, each car class have different handling, the car sounds are not bad at all. While the core foundation is nice and an arcade track racer is an interesting concept, the final product feels more like a tech demo than a complete game. Everything feels barebones, under-realized, and very limited in content. Having a career mode with a team to manage and a racing HQ is a fantastic idea—I would love to see this in a proper simcade title like Forza Motorsport—but it falls a bit short here. While I respect the developers' vision, I'm not a huge fan of the cartoonish cars and characters. However this is not really a problem, the main issue I have with it is that the game lacks a soul: there are no rival protagonists to compete against, no cutscenes, and no voice acting. It ultimately feels a bit too bland, lacking the hook that makes you want to keep coming back. Instead, it feels like a mobile game you only boot up when you're bored. I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I don't like that the developers have been mostly radio silent. They promised more content alongside the console release, which is good, the Caterham addition was nice too but most of the time it's a total lack of communication, which makes the game feel abandoned (similar to what they are doing with NASCAR 25). To breathe some life into the game, maybe it needs some kind of a storyline. Since the devs are also working on NASCAR and IndyCar projects, adding those as special events would be amazing and act as free cross-promotion. They could also add historic racing events unlocked through an HQ museum, complete with an old videotape visual filter like it was a flashback into history or something. I don't know, just some ideas that I throw in here I like the crew arriving at the track and unloading the car, but it’s identical every single time. The same music, same time of day, and same weather make the experience feel too repetitive. Bring some spices into it! I like racing games, I want to support it so we could have more arcade racer, but this is kind of hard to recommend in this current state, at this price. I waited for a sale before buying and even with that in mind, I can't really rate it over a 6/10 for me
2nd Edit: The AI is still way too physical in the faster cars. The slower cars, no problem. The faster cars are very frustrating to try and come from the back to the front. I hate that there is no qualifying in career. Whoever decided that we should start last in every single race should be fired. I want to love this game and it is very close to being great, but I can't see playing it much going forward in it's current state. EDIT: After the first update, 1.0.a1, the game is much more playable and fun. The AI is very much improved. They are still physical at times, but they aren't shoving you off the track or piling into the corners like they were originally. I can focus more on learning the tracks and less on getting wrecked. I still don't like starting in the back every single race, but it is much more manageable now than it was. Original Review: I like the game overall. My only complaints are having to start last in every single career race and the AI being way too physical in the faster cars. They are very raceable in the slower cars, but as you get to the faster cars you might as well be playing pinball or bumper cars. Same as Karting Superstars... surprise, surprise. My biggest problem though is not having a qualifying session in career mode. Starting last in every single race is pretty much a deal killer for me. I do like the longer races where you have to pit. You actually control your car on pit road. They force a pit limiter on you, but there are not many racing games that let you drive yourself down pit road. Plus you decide how much fuel to take by how long you stay in your pit stall. If you leave too early, you will pay the price. I do agree that the content is a bit lacking, but I think the idea is to keep replaying career mode on harder levels. But with the player always having to start last and the AI as brutal as they are, the harder levels are not very appealing to me personally. I will recommend it because I love the graphics, the handling of the cars and the tracks are very realistic. There are even a few real world tracks. They are scaled down, but I have no problem with that in an arcade game like this. I would just like to see qualifying added and the AI be less aggressive. It's just not fun to race them in the faster cars.
I was looking forward a lot to this game, and I'm extremely happy to say that this game lives up to my expectations and then some. The handling model is one of the best, if not the best handling model I've ever driven in an arcade racer. The cars are very easy to get around the track, but incredibly difficult to get the absolute most out of them (I still don't know how the top players of this game set the times they do). Racing online with friends is also incredibly enjoyable, and going side-by-side with your friends for laps on end is some of the most fun you can have in a racing game. The career mode and city/HQ builder mode is a lot of fun as well, and it's really cool to see the garage shown in the menus change as you upgrade it. I really like the reverse championship order grids, but I would like to see qualifying return for race 1 just like in Circuit Superstars. In terms of the races themselves, the AI are fun to race against, but they are sometimes overly aggressive and will do dumb sends that will lose you huge amounts of time (at best), or force you off the track and give you a slowdown, compounding the amount of time you lose. Fortunately, the AI are also very aggressive with each other, giving you a good opportunity to capitalize on their mistakes. The boosts you can get from your buildings can be incredibly overpowered, ranging from massive engine power boosts to allowing you to cut the course without penalty. In terms of online, there is no public multiplayer yet (at the time of writing this review), and honestly I think that's for the best. The netcode is very bad at the moment (I have had several moments where AI cars would surge forward to shove me off the track and then teleport back onto the racing line like nothing happened) and it sometimes makes racing people in the faster cars difficult. I would like to see this fixed before public lobbies are added. The game is a little light on content, but the cars all drive so differently that there is a lot to be enjoyed. The only car I'm not a fan of is the Touring Car, as it has a very low top speed, too much grip, and accelerates too fast. This makes some sections of track (like the second half of Bahrain) completely flat out and negligible. In future updates, I would like to see: - A way to scroll the leaderboards in the Time Attack gamemode (As far as I'm aware you can't do that right now) - A rear view mirror so you don't have to spam look back to see who is behind you - A timer showing when the current weekly Time Attacks end (this was in Circuit Superstars and I don't know why this isn't in this game) - Bring back Practice mode from Circuit Superstars, and have permanent ghosts for each car/track combo (Circuit Superstars had this but deleted your ghosts when you quit back to the main menu). This would make figuring out how to go fast in this game much easier. - Multi-car/multiclass racing and more than 12 cars on the grid. The longer/endurance races are so much fun to race and it would add a lot to be able to race multiple classes on track. This was possible in Circuit Superstars by setting the car class to "Any" for multiplayer races, allowing multiple cars to be selected. This is currently not possible in this game. - Multiple manufacturers/car models per class Overall though, I am a huge fan of this game and would HIGHLY recommend buying this game at full price. This might be my new favorite arcade racer I have ever played.
