TLDR: This game is 100% worth your money. At the time of writing this, at minimum it's an investment into an incredibly lovingly crafted fighting game with a thriving custom content community, but there is so much more along the way that will make it worth your while. THE GOOD: Fraymakers has maybe one of the best engines out of any platform fighter on Steam. Movement is clean, satisfying, and has incredible potential for hype combos and entertaining gameplay. The implementation of airdashing is incredibly fun once you get the hang of it, and the low friction of most characters makes it easy to slide off ledges, cancel freefall, continue combos, which all comes together to make a wonderfully free-flow experience. Training mode is middle-of-the-road but provides more than the bare minimum for labbing combos and trying things out. The characters and assists have beautifully animated pixel art which gives unexpected expressiveness to characters like Fishbunjin and Impostor, and the stages are similarly beautiful. The music is one of my favorite parts about the game. Super Soul Bros, FamilyJules, and OCRemix all knock it out of the park with their inspired remixes that turn beloved classics from the source material into something right out of Smash Bros. Existing casual content has a lot of potential, with some basic match modifiers and unique hazards that can define how a match is played. And then there's custom content. There is such a great community on the McLeod Discord dedicated to making all kinds of content with FrayTools, and if you're interested in custom content yourself it is incredibly easy to pick up. There's detailed documentation and several guides online, and if that fails the Discord community is usually kind and helpful for those who need it. Maybe that's not relevant to the game itself but it's definitely made my experience of Fray better and it might persuade those looking to pick this game up for the workshop. THE BAD: As the game stands right now, game balance isn't in a super great state (however a balance patch is incoming so stay tuned). Character archetypes almost always lean more closely towards rushdowns which can be a turn-off for some people. In addition, the "quickplay" function isn't super active and when it is, it's likely for newer players to get matched with more experienced ones which can make the new player experience rough. Rollback netcode isn't the best so if you don't have the best internet quickplay probably isn't the move. My recommendation is to join the McLeodGaming Discord and look for matches there, but if that's not your thing local matches with friends are always an option. Lastly, the game is lacking in overall "content." 8 characters, a few dozen assists, and 7 stages (as of now) is pretty good for a platform fighter in early access but the lack of singleplayer modes or gameplay variability is a concern for some. However, don't let that stop you from considering the game because... THE YET-TO-COME: Here's what has been publicly revealed to be in the works: 2 new characters by summer 2026, 3 new stages, items, a balance patch, break-the-targets mode, custom modes, and victory screens. Promised but not mentioned in a bit are: 14 total stages, 50+ total assists, Fraybets, more music, another announcer pack, VFX/SFX reworks, custom menus, supers, various bits of polish, and a DLC character post-launch. This game is shaping up to be a legendary platform fighter and I sincerely hope even if you don't buy it you keep an eye on where it goes.

I'm a pretty big fan of Mcleodgaming's work, especially the Super Smash Flash series, specifically 1 for its dumb fun and jank but 2 is probably one of the best fan made Smash clones out there... and it was made in Flash! So here is this same developer with a new indie fighter, this one has 2 claims to fame, the assist system and its emphasis on custom content. Fraymakers is a well rounded fighting game on its own, each of the fighters are fun to use and represent their source material well, only problem is that there's only 7 so far, pick random for every player and most of the time, you'd get at least one mirror match... but you're not really here to pit Octodad against Orcane and Fishbunjin for Cephalopod Supremacy, you want to make something. When I first started following Smash Flash 2's development, they had a page for something called Expansion Characters, which weren't a part of the base games and were developed by users for download (I think, I remember there was a forum where people made their own characters under that category). The Workshop support is much like that. The community isn't as robust as Rivals' workshop, mostly because the sprites are a lot bigger and more complex. But you have the ability to make whatever with a program called Fraytools, draw whatever you want, put the pieces together, bring it to life, im excited to try it, 20 years ago I had an idea for my very own Super Smash Bros. game with characters like Spongebob and the character I made in Lego Star Wars II based on myself, it'll be glorious There's one other feature that sets Fraymakers apart from most other Smash type. Assists, you build up a meter and out pops a little buddy to help you. Maybe you have a guy that gives you a buff or someone will throw your rival, giving you a chance to combo them to death. There's a bunch of them so you're always free to experiment with whichever works with your playstyle. The saddest thing about the game is the online, it works well but there's just not a lot of folks playing the game. I've played the game for at least a week or two before I fought my first combatant online All in all, this game could just be what you need to make the Smash game of your dreams, show your friends the cool stuff you make... or just school them with the most bizarre cast of characters you can imagine, it's all up to you

I don't really write or give reviews, but I just saw how to write one and now I couldn't help but give one. The game, when I first saw it, looked really promising in my opinion, with a highly customization nature, like Garry's Mod. I could create my own roster of playable characters from stuff like video games, movies, and even original characters. When I finally got the guts to give the game a shot though, it wasn't EXACTLY what I had in mind. FrayTools looked overwhelming and complex (maybe I'm just lazy, I don't know), and there's not very many user content in the Steam Workshop that I could use to at least round out my envisioned roster (At least, last time I checked). It's still Early Access though, so it'll probably get better as time goes on. Maybe I'll check back when the game is finally taken out of Early Access, and I would perhaps recommend to YOU that you wait until then to try out Fraymakers.........or not. You be you.
