Ok game for the price. Lack of content and decision making affected my runs pretty quickly. No puzzles to solve or situations to adapt, you can bruteforce 1 strategy through whole game. Gets repetative very fast and requires to much control at some point (click here and there). But still interesting try to merge some genres and ok game to spend time on a train or plane. It has potential to become very nice game if developer adds randomness and situations to runs to encourage a player to rebuild a train on a go.
Quick Verdict: Gameplay: 3.5/5 – Roguelite strategy that has wide variety of tactics and situations; might shoehorn you to a specific build only for higher difficulties; there’s still a lot of potential to this game that needs to be unlocked Visuals: 4.5/5 – The developers switched from AI to hand-drawn art which gives it its unique charm. Soundtrack: 4/5 – Soundtrack does give you the shivers and feels depending on the biome you are in. Voice acting for diff skins might fit better. Story: 4/5 – I like that there is a clear progression of story in the game; quite sad that it is kind of disjointed on a specific cutscene. Overall Recommendation: 4/5 – If you like roguelite strategy management that is easy to play but needs dedicated time to master, then this game is for you! Sn*wp**rc*r the game! While the spelling might feel awkward if you keep looking at it, Frostrain 2 is a definite upgrade to the original game. The addition of artifacts, probabilities, decision trees, and character powers make every run feels different depending on your luck. With the developers stepping away from AI art(really, kudos to the team), it added the indie charm that this game was made with Red Knight Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Pros – Gameplay : I’ll get straight to the point that I am not fond of deckbuilding games, but there are a few exceptions, in which both Frostrain 1 & 2 achieved it. I really like how strategy and affinity comes into play, as well as modifying your hand size and options to enable you to run the game however you like. And each run is different; you may encounter a lot of artifact supply drops in your wanted path, or there may be a drought of supply in the path which forces you to take a detour. It’s always fun to mess around the builds for maximum green happiness. – Roguelite Experience: The variety of artifacts, decision trees, and affinities will force your run to adapt depending on your path and the RNG. At higher difficulties, you may switch your builds and discover that the overlooked affinities might be the key to get the hell away from the blizzard. – Product of Love : The developers really did shift into hand-drawn art, which makes it more charming and does show that the devs are willing to sacrifice in order to bring out the best in the game. The haunting soundtrack, coupled with black and white visuals really does evoke a dire atmosphere. And hey, each conductor has their own story and personality, but it is still up to the player on how they will emulate the conductors. As per usual, this game is not without its flaws. I hope that the developers will get to improve this game more Cons – Tendency to Shoehorn : On lower difficulties, you can experiment with builds and heck, you may be able to live beyond 150 days as long as you are patient. On higher difficulties however, time will be your most valuable resource, and some artifacts, affinities and decision trees will not be viable anymore because of the pressure, and coupled with bad RNG, it will severely limit your builds that you can play to conquer higher difficulties. Most likely it is because of the next con. – Uneven Viability : I did try other builds to beat the conductors’ runs on frost 3 difficulty, and one thing is for sure is that some affinities are greatly favored due to how accessible they are. This limitation also shows on endless runs, wherein certain affinities don’t scale well with the exponential unhappiness growth. Because some affinities rely on cycle time, the Central Supply Bureau will always be necessary to other builds which in turn, will lead to con 1: shoehorning. – Further Potential : After you finish the whole game, there’s still an itch that it can scratch, because you know this game has much more potential. Special scenarios, endless runs, random maps, more biomes, more artifacts, leveraging underutilized mechanics, you feel that there isstill much more to this game at the time of writing. – Translation Issues : Don’t get me wrong, most of the descriptions in the game are simple and understandable. Most, that is. There are still some translations that are wonky or do sound wrong, especially when you try to leverage affinities that in the end, did not work out because the tooltip is misleading. I am really looking forward to the developments of the game. I still wanted to do more runs, do more upgrades, and challenge myself to try other builds. I wish for more success for the developers!
RNG is rough but they do give you a lot of ways to manage it or cycle through it. At the end of the day it's very replayable. Several different play styles are allowed and your decisions do matter and snowball out of control if you choose poorly or luck is not with you. It's a shame my train daughter keeps failing a 65% roll so often though.
I heard the game had finally left Early Access, so I figured it was time to leave a review. A friend recommended it to me, and I’ve been playing since Early Access. It’s genuinely a lot of fun. Every run requires you to constantly adapt your synergies and plan or revise your route based on the cards and artifacts you pick up along the way. Finding a way to make everything work and successfully complete a run is incredibly satisfying. The concept of a train racing through a snowy landscape is also incredibly charming. It’s been a long time since a game made me completely lose track of time like this. I haven’t had a chance to try Mimi yet because I’ve been busy with work, but I’m really looking forward to playing her soon!
Frost Train is back, it is still a great game. I feel this game streamlined some parts yet took away a small bit of the late game synergy mechanics (Faith, for example) yet I really like how the rest of the game plays. I also think that the three conductors feel really different and have their own stakes. Definitely recommended for fans of cards and management.
