After a mere 500 hours, I finally managed to beat the full 41' Campaign as the Axis (on the easiest difficulty) If that gives you pause then I'd suggest sticking to Farts of Iron, kid. This is a very thoroughly researched and intensively executed grand-strategic level game, which despite it's scale, offers a lot of interesting decision-making down to the smallest details. Just one example would be choosing whether to issue limited Wehrmacht support units to allied divisions to slightly improve their combat capacity, to oversupply German units to strengthen them further, or to keep them in reserve or send them to other fronts to maintain a tenuous strategic situation. You manage this down to the Brigade, Regiment, and even Company level for every unit in the Wehrmacht and it's allied armies. If you've played other grand strategy games and wish to delve into the abyss of autistic minutiae there may be a game here for you. You are, as either side (though I admit, I have not played the Soviet campaign yet, maybe next year when I've recovered) faced with dozens of undesirable situations every turn. You have to fortify held cities, re-gauge railways to allow supplies to move, replace (or shoot in the head, if you're the Soviets), unskilled officers, and assign an un-managable number of units to armies and army corps which have far-too-low command capacities to oversee everything at once. Unlike the average Paradox slop, you cannot have everything a la carte here, you are facing a set challenge with only so many correct answers. This is pretty fun and refreshing, in view of the 'AAA' grand strategy genre mostly being filled with limp, map-painting exercises in goofy speculative history. Its main drawback in my view is a lack of consistency across mechanics. Managing the air war is done in an entirely different, and far less convenient interface than managing ground assets, and it felt like a chore. Very often I found air groups unable to perform a specific mission type, and spent an inordinate amount of time trying to correct it. The UI is also very primitive in some places, and an inability to conveniently re-assign support units or divisions en mass leads to a bloated time-to-completion. Certain elements of the war are simulated to absurd levels, such as fuel, which is tracked from derrick to refinery, to depot, to unit, down to the individual vehicle. For all of this simulation however, comes the feeling that you can never really be sure if it's all just there to gratify a feeling of depth, or if it's really making a tangible difference. You have no control over industry or production as you do in Hearts of Iron, you cannot choose for instance, to build more Wunderwaffe or only mass-produce Panzer IIIs, and yet you are presented with immense spreadsheets of tank and industrial production. It's amusing, but seems a bit aimless. The game would not suffer much from abstracting certain things like this, but perhaps there's another deep level of optimizing one's gameplay and planning I simply haven't mastered. The game has a massive manual, which contains all the technical information at hand, but does not make it very easily referable for a new player. Likewise the tutorial scenario is a bit too basic to really teach even the basics of tactical movement and unit-activation. I strongly suggest watching gameplay on youtube; not so much to give a play-by-play example of how to beat the scenarios, but for the basics of troop movement, preserving combat prep, fatigue, etc. RTFM, but if you're like me, you'll need more than that. Finally, consult the community here on Steam or on the game's forums. War in the East: 2 is a solid 7/10 that I spent almost a month straight playing over 5 attempts.

It’s like playing chess blindfolded in a blizzard, except every pawn has morale, fuel consumption, and a five-page personnel file. You won’t win quickly—or maybe ever—but by turn 43, you’ll know what it feels like to be a stressed-out general with a map the size of Eastern Europe and not enough trucks. Brutal, brilliant, and deeply satisfying—if spreadsheets and suffering are your thing.

One should note that this is an updated version of War in the East, and anyone familiar with Gary Grigsby's work recognizes that a significant time investment is required to learn and play the game. The games are extremely in-depth and demand a substantial amount of learning. I highly recommend utilizing YouTube videos as a learning resource, as I have done for all Gary Grigsby games. The game is fantastic, with basic yet effective graphics that suit the game's style. While the graphics are not overly complex, they are well-executed, particularly in the hex-and-counter system, and the cutscenes effectively set the mood for the impending war. The game's historical context is impeccable, with sound effects and music that accurately evoke the atmosphere of a World War II strategy game. The gameplay is the core of the game, offering a wealth of depth and complexity. Players will be responsible for managing a wide range of aspects, including supply chains from Germany to the Russian front, and from the Ural mountains to Berlin. While there is too much to explain in this review, suffice it to say that the gameplay is engaging and rewarding. If you have the time and dedication to learn the game, it is 100% worth the purchase. The price of $80 is reasonable considering the game's caliber and scope. The options in the game are extensive, allowing players to set the game exactly how they want it, whether it's controlling specific groups or delegating tasks to the computer. The only reason I did not give it a higher score is that it can be overwhelming, but overall, the game is exceptionally well-designed. Gary Grigsby's work is consistently impressive, and this game is no exception. I highly recommend the $79 purchase. 8.5/10

Have been plaing WitE since it's predecessor released in 2010. Switched as soon as this release came out. WitE 2 is better than the first in nearly every area. I'm an off again, on again player. Will play a few turns, come back a few days later, etc etc. After playing this for several hundred hours (I have many offline hours) I can safely say that I still don't fully understand how to maximize a few parts of this game (Supply, air force) Play mostly as the Germans, with a handful of playthroughs as the Soviets. Learning curve is steep. Watch a few videos, keep the manual handy and delve in on some of the smaller scenarios to start. For campaign gameplay, don't be surprised if it takes you up to an hour to plan your move (per turn) to start for the first few turns. If playing Germany, bashing straight forward against the enemy will feel good at first, and then you'll quickly realize that's not going to work long term. This game forces you to think on an operational and strategic level. Fantastic, in depth detailed game of eastern front warfare in WWII. This title is not for a casual wargamer. It takes many weeks to a handful of months to play a campaign game. If you are interested in a very deep counter/hex simulation, price tag is worth it. If not sure, watch a lot of videos to see if this might be for you. Very complex engine under the hood of this title.

Complex but deeply rewarding. Played as the Soviets, and those first few hours where you're coming to grips with the extremely detailed and in-depth systems as you simultaneously get completely overrun by a massively more powerful military really drives home the disparity. But it also made the turnaround later in the war more worthwhile - turn by turn as I built up forces in the Russian forest to eventually encircle Army Group Center in mid-42 felt like an amazing payoff. but even with major victories the AI is still able to hold you off and switching to offensive operations suddenly made me aware of how precarious my supply situation was, with armies I'd grown fond of because of their defensive courage now facing horrible loses to attrition in the Carpathian mountains. The whole game is much more than the sum of its (very many) parts and really achieves what it sets out to do. Incredibly carefully built, and highly recommended if this is your area of interest.
