Very enjoyable well crafted game. Playing solo the AI works well in the early game defending as the Soviets which provides a enjoyable way to learn the game mechanics or just to try out a non historical strategy. Once understanding the game going head to head is the way to go if you can find an opponent who will commit . The game has it's flaws don't they all however WITE1 is true gem a classic game all strategy gamers should have in their Library.
Had this game for a while but not the time to learn to play it until now. Phew! Started with the recommended 'easy' Road to Minsk. Won a German major victory at the 6th attempt. No room for error or hanging about to achieve objectives, but now I know what I'm up against it promises to be a good game and good for my aging brain.
It's great, with some important caveats. You need to be very interested in a WWII wargame. And you need to have tons of patience. If you are patient enough to read some of the manual. And you're patient enough to accept that it doesn't have 3D graphics. And you're patient enough to spend many minutes or even a few hours on a single turn that represents one week of the war. And patient enough to read a lot more of the manual. And then you're patient enough to wait several minutes for the AI to take its turn. And then you're patient enough to accept that a few minor details in the game might not be exactly how the manual explains them (but close). But you're patient enough to keep reading the manual anyway. And patient enough to keep it up for 6 months without time to play anything else. Then your patience will be rewarded with perhaps the grandest digital pushing around of counters that one could hope for. It's excellent, but it's excellent in a very particular way for a very particular sort of person.
damn son this game expensive af lol i do have to say it is currently the most in depth grand strat game i own.. but tbh its not really that complicated, but its def not hex of steel"great game as well btw" its very very in depth. im kinda disappointed that i have to use the arrows instead of wasd and also figured out to zoom in a particular spot on the map u need to click or highlight a hex in that area. i got it for like 25. worth every penny. but $80? idk man.. thats a lot of money lol but def an awesome must have if u can afford it
