Reminds me a lot of Robotech: Battlecry. Like, a lot. Boot it up, pick a mission, pick a mech, and go. I also appreciate the mix of enemies, where you have bug hordes and rival GBs to contend with.

Gearbits is a game i am still actively playing but love dearly. It is a love letter to armored core, gundam, and the mecha genre as a whole, with retro psx/lowpoly models, charming sprites, and a decent story. The game performs well on virtually any machine, and is incredibly fun. Its challenging, but replaying failed missions with new builds is the key to success.

If you want a quick, cheap mecha game to play around with, this fits the bill. It's 20 missions of story that took me about 5 hours plus a replayable wave survival mode. There is a decent variety of weapons* and maybe a dozen mechs to try out. There are two main enemies; bug aliens and other mechs. The bug aliens come in massive swarms plus some supporting ranged bugs. The enemy mechs are basically just an opposing version of you without much in the way of unique bosses. Despite being a fairly limited game the later bug missions with truly massive swarms do satisfy a certain starship troopers vibe and the frantic missile duels against the mech levels do feel like something out of a mech anime episode. Criticisms should be read with the understanding that this looks like it was made mostly by one guy and is cheap: [*] Missions flip between brain-dead easy and really hard with little in between. [*]The mech enemies sling tons of guided missiles at you and near the end of the game can ruin even a heavy mech with a single salvo if you get hit. This turns many late game missions into a constant missile dodging exercise. [*] Despite the large amount of weapons to play around with the missions/enemies don't really give you much reason to do so. The massive bug swarms NEED very efficient AOE to deal with plus a little bit of long ranged to deal with the artillery bugs. So rifle + rocket pods for bugs. The mech enemies are few in number, can't dodge effectively and are dangerous to get close to. You need to be constantly dodging missiles rather than shooting, so take 1 sniper weapon and then as many guided missiles as you can to fire and forget. Playing with other weapon sets isn't rewarded because the two enemy types rarely overlap and going outside the optimum gear for each is hitting yourself in the nuts. [*] Many missions give you invincible AI companions to make the battles feel larger but the AI often gets preoccupied with them. You can sometimes just sit back and watch your squad mates get swarmed by the enemy while you sit a mile away slinging guided missiles or rockets at the distracted enemy and beat levels without using your brain.

Gearbits is a very solid experience that I find to be very recommendable at its modest pricepoint. It had a fun campaign with variety of mission, pleasant visuals, replayability in the form of secrets, further unlockables, and alternative game modes. The story, while maybe simple or short crafted a comfortable and fitting narrative with further effort to develop characters on the side. This one even got fun post release content updates like the Holiday Special and a paid DLC to further itself. There might be some unpolished bits or minor issues here and there but nothing that creates detrimental problems. A must have for any mecha fan wanting an excursion into indie. full review available on video here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSEsGJrw4iw

It's a love letter to mecha and gundam/oldgen armored core in particular, I recommend it. It definitely feels like as much of an unpolished Unreal game as it is, but it's well made where it counts. Combat feels good, level design ranges from kind of mediocre to solid, and there's a pretty good amount of content. I can definitely see myself booting the survival mode up every now and then, and there's a little bit of room for different builds. It's definitely a game I'd love to see continued in a sequel; a second take by the same people with some more experience and funding.
