I wanted a "Gears of War Masters Collection" that included the original Gears of War trilogy along with Gears of War 4 and Judgment. Instead, we got "Gears of War: Reloaded", which honestly felt like an unnecessary release to me. It's essentially a refined version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, which was still exclusive to the Microsoft Store/Xbox App and had horrible frame-pacing and frame-drop issues when running above 30 FPS, at least when I first played it through PC Game Pass back in 2021. That said, this "Reloaded" version is definitely far better than the Ultimate Edition. However, it has too many weird bugs related to the machine learning technique of both enemies and allies. Sometimes an ally will seemingly try to get himself killed while fighting enemies, while other times enemies will strangely act blind when you suddenly walk directly in front of them! I completed the entire story campaign on "Hard difficulty", and these strange machine learning bugs really annoyed me and ruined the experience to a certain degree. Considering the original game is 16 years old at this point, the Reloaded version is very well optimized. You can easily play it at 4K/60 FPS on hardware from a few years ago. There are still some traversal stutters here and there, probably related to shader compilation or Unreal Engine's traversal system, and it's quite strange that these issues still haven't been completely addressed despite the game essentially being remastered for a second time. At this point, the studio could even consider remaking the entire game from scratch using Unreal Engine 5 or even UE6, similar to the recently released Halo Campaign Evolved. However, even with all the technical improvements, I still don't think this newer version can completely beat the original game's art style and visual presentation. The classic Gears of War simply has a unique look and atmosphere. The storyline is quite straightforward and doesn't bother explaining many things in detail, probably because some of that background was expanded upon in the original sequels, Gears of War 2 and 3. And yes, I absolutely want Gears of War 2, 3, Judgment, and 4 on Steam! The gameplay and shooting mechanics also still feel very much like they're from the Xbox 360/PS3 era. It seems like the core gameplay mechanics weren't changed at all. There are even moments where Marcus moves somewhat strangely, with his head leaning too far forward while holding his assault rifle. I'm not sure whether that's intentional or simply a quirk in the game's code. Overall, I really enjoyed Gears of War: Reloaded. Despite its issues, it's a great way to experience the original Gears of War on modern hardware. And now I really want the rest of the series to get proper Steam releases very, very soon! I bought it at 75% off, and for that price, it was definitely worth it. Thank you, and have a nice time ahead!
I just finished a playthrough of Gears of War Reloaded on SteamOS (switching between a Legion Go S Z2Go and a Minis Forum HX90G) and immediately afterwards started a new playthrough of the original Xbox 360 version on Xbox Series X/S for comparison. (I have both X and S, the latter mostly for recording gaming sessions, and I jump between the two). For those who wonder, the multi-platform and (stable) 120 FPS (on compatible hardware) support are the main differences between the Reloaded and the older Ultimate Edition that only ran on Xbox One and Windows PCs. The killer difference: The AI of the team mates does not suck nearly as much in the original Xbox 360 version as it does in Ultimate/Reloaded. The team does not magically fall behind or disappear completely in the original version and Dom, Baird and Cole are also not as annoyingly useless as they are in the remasters. The controls in the Xbox 360 version are fine (or maybe I just still have a lot of muscle memory). The other gigantic difference: Only the original Xbox 360 version truly feels like Gears of War, the Ultimate and Reloaded editions could be any other 'modern' 3rd person shooter game. The atmosphere of the original version is vastly superior thanks to the gritty art design; that artistic vision got completely lost in both remasters. On Xbox, unfortunately, Gears 1 only got the FPS Boost treatment while Gears 2 and 3 also received X1XE upgrades and get upscaled to 4K on Series X and 1440P on Series S which makes them look MUCH better on Xbox Series consoles than the original game. Gears Judgment also never received an X1XE upgrade, but unlike the original game it at least got Auto HDR support on top of FPS Boost, but it's still the worst looking game of the original four and also has the worst controls. Nonetheless, Xbox is the only place where you can play the full series. The main reason to buy and play Gears of War Reloaded is to be able to play the game on a handheld or a non-Microsoft platform like SteamOS or the PS5. For the standard asking price of the new remaster, Microsoft should have at least bundled it with proper ports of Gears 2 and 3 (even without remastering them, the graphical fidelity of the X1XE versions would have been perfectly fine). Gears of War Reloaded might not be the most atmospheric version of Gears of War, and it might also be overpriced for being the second remaster of a now 20 years old game, but I naturally still recommend this title: Gears of War still is and will always be one of my most favorite games of all time, in any version. And now... "Grab some ammo" and "back in your hole!"
Gears of War Reloaded Review *Disclaimer* I am a longtime fan of the Gears of War series so expect a little bit of bias. (No Spoilers) Graphics What is there to say really, the game looks great and gritty. Coming from PS5 to PC I do notice a massive difference in the visuals. Although it is the same game as Ultimate Edition that was released years ago, the update in polish and clarity is definitely noticeable. It manages to upload that dark and gloomy atmosphere OG Gears fans grew up with but mixing in a little bit of vibrance at the same time. Visually for what it is, 10/10 . Gameplay This is a topic that can be very divisive and understandably so. The game can feel clunky, inconsistent and down right broken sometimes. Being released after Gears 4 & 5 which featured a much more modern and fluid movement style, this could create a massive learning curve and automatically turn people off and hit refund. This game specifically targets the classic or original fans who are already used to these type of mechanics. Personally for me I enjoyed the gameplay because I am one of those classic Gears fans. Can it be frustrating? Absolutely, so I don't blame gamers for criticizing it or just trashing it in general. For me, even though i generally enjoy this clunky type of movement, there were still issues 7/10 . Multiplayer This is the big one, Gears of War is known not just for its amazing single player/co-op campaign but more notably the addictive and sometimes frustrating multiplayer. Lets get one thing clear, the skill gap is massive between new or casual gamers and experienced players. Wall bouncing and getting one shotted by the Gnasher is a common theme. I consider myself pretty good but I pale in comparison to the remaining player base. I feel this skill gap instantly turns players off while some learn and adapt. This skill gap for me was a pro and a con. If the teams were grossly unbalanced we would get washed, then again the difficulty made each kill that much more satisfying giving that micro dopamine boost to keep learning and trying different strategies. For example if you found yourself against someone bouncing off of walls, sometimes the chainsaw would stop them. The culture of Gears relies heavily on the Gnasher alone so sometimes changing it up will give you the advantage. Overall I had fun, as frustrating as it was sometimes 7/10 . Summary Overall its a solid game, the campaign is amazing if you are a casual, especially with a buddy. Multiplayer will make you sweat and try hard a little depending on the lobby but none the less very addictive. If you are like me and have the urge to 100% every game, be warned there is a chuck of achievements specifically for multiplayer and with E-Day around the corner expect the player base to dwindle further. The biggest gate keep is going to be the Seriously Achievement which requires 10K kills. Chasing that alone has pushed me to max prestige. Whether you want to enjoy a beautiful and gritty campaign or get some satisfying kills online with a challenge I would highly recommend. My overall score for Gears of War Reloaded is a solid 8/10 .
