Needs some polishing but a lot better than the reviews would lead you to believe worth it if your a fan of the first game or the Aliens universe

I like the game and I’m having fun with it, but I hoped for much better. If you like the first AFE you will probably like AFE2 too as long as you don’t expect a big improvement over the first game. Like many say it feels like an expansion rather than a new and all around improved version. Not great, not terrible. The good stuff from the first game is still there; customize your class, skills, guns and appearance and go shoot stuff up. Graphics, maps and sound/music are just fine. There isn’t anything impressive about the game in general. The main problem with this game is that it feels a bit janky and, sadly, I don’t think it’s worth the full price unless you really want to play a horde shooter in the Alien universe. In my opinion other horde shooter games like Darktide, Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2 have raised the bar for what you can get for your money and make AFE2 look overpriced. A lot of negative reviews get called out for having one hour or less playtime; I have played through the whole game and it really doesn’t get that much better. The first mission is enough to see most of what the game has to offer and what its shortcomings are. The game suffers from the typical UE5 stutter. It does a small shader compilation on start but it’s clearly not enough because you get stutters often during the first run of a mission (and just occasionally otherwise). Shouldn’t be a specs issue either (attached to review, plus the game is on a gen5 nvme). The animations are indeed stiff like many mention. Depending on your standards you might not care. If you come from other horde games like the ones I mentioned, the comparison will feel like you are playing a JJJ game (triple jank). As an Earth Defense Force enjoyer I’m fine with arcadey and janky games so I don’t mind much but it certainly hurts immersion in the dark and gritty context of Aliens and I am not surprised many are put off by it. Another thing I noticed from the very first mission is the weird enemy AI behaviour for the aliens. Most of the time they move the fast and nimble way you would expect xenos to move. The problem is sometimes they will clearly stop to “think” on their next step. I notice this very often for xenos on ceilings or walls, they will reach a spot where they are meant to jump somewhere else and just freeze there for a second deciding what to do. Same thing goes for one of the bigger aliens who will oftentimes run to a player, slap them once or twice and then stand still for a second before deciding to go somewhere else or target another player. I don’t know if it's somehow because the enemy is stunned by shots or something like that, but since there is no discernible animation (they literally just stand still) or any feedback I could notice, it just looks goofy. There are definitely some animations for stuns though because I’ve seen some enemies fall down and stay like that for a couple of seconds. Audio is not great either in some places. In the majority of the areas in the game the sound is just fine, but there are specific places like tunnels or some enclosed spaces where the game tries to apply some kind of effect to what I assume is to try to emulate what sound should be like in that environment. I don’t know if those sound effects are bugged, but they are absolutely terrible. As for friendly fire, I’m conflicted when it comes to it in relation to abilities. All the area of effect skills can hit you or your team. I understand it makes sense to nerf the player's ability to deal with hordes via AOE but it also makes some stuff unviable. For example, an upgrade that makes the machinist drone explode after its timer runs out becomes a troll skill. I played with someone who had it on and they topped the friendly fire stats at mission end screen lmao. Some abilities seem to be designed for use around normal difficulty or lower where there is no friendly fire. I am not complaining that there is friendly fire but one of the very few strong points this game has is the skill system and this reduces choice significantly. Not a big deal for me since I’m used to these types of games narrowing viable strategies as you raise difficulty, but it might not be fun for everyone. Honestly I like the game even with its issues but it feels unpolished and unfinished so I hope the devs can improve it.

Its good where it matters and its bad where it doesn't matter if you enjoyed killing hordes of aliens in the first game then this is an upgrade, classes and weapons feel distinct enough to have decent build diversity and honestly the combat on the higher levels feels like what you would imagine fighting these things would feel like if the cut out all cinematics, dialogue, and cutscenes they could've saved themselves and the consumers tons of money and priced the game in the reasonable 30$ range for the actual gameplay

I waited to complete the campaign before posting this review and share my experience. For those wondering if it's a reskin of the first game, no. Its the same formula, yes, but still a good evolution, not revolution. The game ran smooth for about 95% but i never experienced issues during the large combat encounters. The bad/annoyances I will admit the conversations with the ship's crew got very tireing very fast and i just started skipping them to unlock the following missions. This is an annoyance, anyone can "get over it". I did get locked behind a door once which prevented me from progressing the mission and had to leave the match. I also had a teamate experience this too. (So two instances in 12h) I did experience a moment of "get the hell outta my way Alpha" with the ally AI and some camera angles get wonky if friendlies or terrain get in the way. Some map areas do feel very similar to sections in the previous game. Other then that I had a blast. End game/replay loop If you do decide to jump in, give it a chance as once you start fully unlocking the classes and perks, the builds become very good and varied. The final "Specialist" class will be extremely fun to build out and experiment with and even more so if you have a crew to squad up with and test various synergies and strategies as the higher difficulties will require it. Beating the hardest difficulty will be part of the end game along with Hoard mode challenges but admitedly this may only be alluring to dedicated squads/fans of the IP and not casuals/playing with randoms. Conclusion/who will appreciate this The price does feel steep if you view this game as a v1.5 or are only interested in experiencing the campaign once or playing solo. It would be fair to wait for a discount and quality updates/patches. But for those ready to grind a bit (and accept some shortcomings), the replayability will come as you sink your teeth into new and interesting builds and challenging yourself on higher difficulties. Just jumping from Standard to Intense changes how you play and approach combat. Things become much more tactical and team coordination will become much more of a necessity. I also appreciate how enemies are no longer bullet sponges - you face more high-level threats, along with FF and limited resources. If you don't care about a challenging experience and overcoming insane hardships then you can skip it. Or wait for that discount down the road. If you want to become a powerhouse extermination machine and love destroying xeno's (and don't mind some grinding) you'll have plenty to keep you busy and get your money's worth.

Seems to have a fun gameplay loop, and the same good aspects of the first game are intact, but the game is stuttering incredibly hard at seemingly random points due to what I can only assume is optimization issues. Most of the reviews so far are completely useless so heres a not 0.1 minutes playtime summary with actual information Good: -Same build depth -Music/Atmosphere -Gameplay loop is engaging, in terms of waves and constantly having something to do -Classes feel meaningful and like each has a valid purpose -Gunplay feels the same (Could definitely use some tuning though for more impact) -Loading screens and matchmaking is fast, despite the optimization issues Bad: -[Personal] pretty constant microstutters, seems this issue varies from player-to-player but be warned -No text chat -Sorta jank oblivion cutscene framing, but not really important -Models are pretty similar to the original, but also they're still suitable so its like a 50/50 good and bad trait -Desync'd audio if the game stutters curing a cutscene -Stuttering/freezing when changing graphics settings or entering some areas/zones TL:DR - Game seems good but has stuttering and optimization issues on launch that cause animations, cutscenes, and gameplay to desync and jitter Seems like a good game that is currently riddled with on-launch optimization issues that when gone will be something potentially great. I'll still recommend it because when the game isnt stuttering I can tell its good, and I have faith they'll patch it quickly, if not, i'll definitely have complaints and change my mind about recommending it.
