April 2025
As a long time fan of this infamously difficult franchise including Ghosts 'n Goblins/Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Gargoyle's Quest, and Maximo, this is a fairly well made and faithful return to the original series that started it all. Once again, this franchise continues to be one of the most consistent in all of gaming. Out of the three series I mentioned, there isn't a single bad game in any of them. Some titles are certainly better than others, but they're all worth playing. As to where Resurrection falls in the lineup, I would say it's on the lower end unfortunately. It's a beautiful game for sure. I know some fans prefer the pixel art, but the storybook aesthetic here looks amazing and is a huge step up from Ultimate GnG's 3D graphics. There's two player coop which I recommend about as much as I recommend playing Battletoads cooperatively (I don't). The soundtrack is quite good as well with some classic tracks making a return, but is no where near as good as previous games especially the 16 bit titles on the SNES and Genesis. My issues mainly stem from design choices I feel run counter to the fun of this series. You move slower than ever. Arthur's run animation is faster than his actual movement speed and you feel it constantly especially when you take into account how many enemies are just faster than you. The game overall is SLOOOOOW. So many platforming sections where you're just waiting for something to move so you can progress the stage. It makes levels take longer than they really should which is odd given the time limit (which you'll never have to worry about) and also because levels are longer than they've ever been. Together, it creates a bit of tedium. Previous games also let you kill enemies as they were spawning. This game forces you to wait for them to finish their animation before you can even damage them. Your attacks were faster as well. The dagger (the fastest weapon) fires slower here than any other game in the series. You used to be able to jump on the turtle's shell safely in Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but here you take damage. You also can't double jump anymore which was a brilliant innovation from Super GnG. On top of all that, this game trolls A LOT, arguably more than any other game. It just finds new and creative ways to get you killed. Repeatedly spawning Firebrand (that fucking red gargoyle) throughout stages as a punishment for attacking mindlessly when you would rarely see him in more than one stage previously is just one example. This also feels like more of a remix of the classic first three games than a true sequel, so it does feel a little unoriginal at times and didn't quite bring as much innovation as Super and Ultimate GnG did. Regarding my recommendation...look these games are for a certain kind of weirdo gamer like myself. I don't know why I like these games. They're unfair with cheap design elements just to make you mad. Automatically highlighting Retry Area when you die instead of Retry at Banner (checkpoint) is so typical of this series. Enemies will spawn literally right on top of you and the screen can quickly become flooded with excessive enemies and projectiles until it's virtually impossible to survive. You don't play these games for a fair challenge. This isn't the "Dark Souls" of anything. Dark Souls is mostly fair and most people have beaten it. Most people won't even get through the first level of Resurrection. The difficulty is very high, but it still has nothing on Ultimate GnG. That game was sadistic. This is much more manageable, but definitely harder than the 16-bit titles. If you like GnG, you will enjoy this. If you don't like these games, avoid it like the plague. I just wish it had the innovative features from previous entries and was more creative in its levels. I put Resurrection above the original, but beneath every other game in the series. Good for the nostalgia alone. (7/10)

It took me 2-3 hours just to complete the very first level. The default difficulty is Legend, the hardest one. A bold choice, since in most games, this is like the "Insane" difficulty that you unlock after breezing through on normal and hard. You actually need to focus a lot to complete a stage. I love that, it is very challenging and very rewarding. Not for everyone though.

For players that define fun as an experience that allows them to roam, explore and progress at your own pace, this game doesn't fit that description. For players that will immediately turn down the difficulty, you'll find fun here, but you'll be missing most of the highs this game has available. There are definitely lows, when you realize that enemy spawns and patterns are 50/50 situations most of the time, but as you practice and get better that matters less and the real joy to be found is mastering every situation thrown your way. Dark Souls fans, Arcade fans, NES fans and all that aren't afraid of a challenge, this game is for you. Pay the price of purchase, then sit and have a time. It's one of the most rewarding games I've ever played and though I could progress a lot farther, I keep going back to the first level, polishing and mastering the game play. It's simply awesome.

I loved GnG as a kid in the late 80's early 90's, and would play it for hours on end! Can only take it in small doses nowadays though, as it makes me want to throw my steam deck against the wall. Still good fun though!

people complaining about this game being too hard or whatever are straight up crying babies. game does not hold your hand but if you take the time to look at the difficulty settings it recommends that new players players play on Squire, and even as a returning player I played through on Squire and had a fantastic time. The game REWARDS you for challenging yourself and learning by becoming more engaging each time you beat the game. this is the exact kind of shit you guys complain about game journalists doing and yet there are hundreds of negative reviews complaining. Fantastic game give it a shot if you like retro platformers
