Jan. 2026
Migami started making games since at least 1997, with fan games and free action games, and among them, they did a couple of Castlevania ones. Their second Castlevania fangame was already a metroidvania, 2001's Haunted Castle 3 - Trevor's Quest. If you check out their games, you can see a refinement process from starting with rather crude and rough games that got better and better. Over the years, they kept at it until 2017's The Lecarde Chronicles 2, another Castlevania metroidvania that was their biggest freeware game until then, and by all accounts a fine metroidvania with some jank but still solid overall. Then they got into commercial games, and last year's Chronicles of the Wolf is their biggest swing yet, another big metroidvania that is a further reflection and a refinement of their game development history and their love for Castlevania, but is otherwise utterly free of any connection to that series. After finishing what I thought were some of the best metroidvania from 2025, I didn't expect another game that isn't much talked about to upend that order, but Chronicles does it splendidly. Mind you, despite all the refinement over the years, there's still some jank here. Controls can be a bit stiff and occasionally not perfectly responsive. You can remap some of the controls, but not all, and I don't know how often I shot the fireball when I really didn't want to, or switched my helpers when I didn't want to. The game's map is in serious need of notes or at least markers, since the game has so much backtracking and secrets. Some minor ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ here and there. But despite these issues, I loved the game from start to finish. Chronicles of the Wolf isn't original. While this isn't a fangame of Castlevania anymore, and instead of vampires, the main attraction, at least in the beginning, is werewolves, this is still a big gothic-styled metroidvania where a large chunk of the game takes place in a castle that will feel very familiar to fans. But of those games that occasionally get tagged igavania, it ranks high up there with Symphony of the Night and is better than most of the GBA or NDS entries. Some of it is due to how well the map is designed. You start with an extensive prologue of three maps that introduce you to the story (there's a story that is actually interesting and worth following, with lots of NPCs, some solid voice acting, and memorable characters), and when you finish off the werewolf you thought was the main big bad, you realize you just started the game. Then you enter the castle and things get even better. The main castle here has that quality that the best games in the genre exhibit, where everything seems to be connected not just horizontally but also vertically, and with multiple entries into every section. You open more and more shortcuts as the game progresses, and almost every section remains relevant. There's a large elevator cutting through the entire castle where you slowly open doors to the various sections, and every time you open another one feels like a triumph. The overall castle is such a dense, nested construct that always seems to have another secret or biome waiting, and it's rare that you are stumped about what to do next. The game has multiple endings, but the big "real" ending requires some serious backtracking and some rather obtuse digging into the castle's mysteries. That's where the subpar map is the biggest hindrance, since many of the things you need to do require you to remember this guy in that place there or that odd thing in another place, but by the time you get the right gimmick, you might have even forgotten what was there. Either take extensive notes or just find a walkthrough for that last stretch of the game (Demajen has a free one; check out his website). This doesn't detract overall from how fine this game is, but it’s a bit annoying for sure. The last thing I want to mention is the soundtrack, which is just phenomenal. I caught myself a couple of times just going through a section again because the music was just so awesome. The pixel art is also quite good in places, especially the horror vibe it's projecting. It's even better than any Castlevania game in places to evoke that gothic chill. The attention to detail alone is impressive. The game occasionally has one-hit kills, which can be annoying if you haven't saved for some time, though it usually gives you a good warning if you're smart enough to understand them (I often wasn't and learned the hard way). Like the stoned figures in one of the intersections. To cap it all off, the game has a couple of issues, but it's among the best metroidvania of 2025 and so far, my absolute favorite. It's not original but a perfect refinement of the igavania line of games, and if that's what you're after, you will likely be very happy with the game, if you can overlook some of the minor jank here.

Right off the bat, if Metroidvanias are your thing, this is worth a play. Before I talk about the things the game does right, though, I want to get a few things out of the way: the game definitely screams "indie". There aren't any huge bugs or major problems with mechanics. However, there are a lot of little problems, most of which could be fixed with some independent play testing and a little more time in the oven. The movement speed always feels a tad slow. Jumping works, but it feels a little clumsy. The controls are clunky and difficult to get used to. Hit boxes are overly generous for both the player and enemies, which means that combat often feels comically easy or frustratingly difficult, but very rarely is it balanced. There are weird spelling and punctuation errors throughout. The voice-acted NPCs are painful to listen to, and their portraits look very amateurish compared to the rest of the game. Not being able to sell your old, worthless weapons is definitely a choice, too. In spite of all my complaints, though, everything is serviceable enough that I can usually forget the jank and have a good time, anyway. The puzzles aren't trivial, but they aren't frustratingly difficult, either. The difficulty curve is reasonable. There's a lot of thought put into the level design. The soundtrack doesn't have amazing bangers the same way SotN does, but it fits the atmosphere of the game and is never really distracting or annoying. All and all, it's obviously an homage to Symphony of the Night, but it feels a lot like the Temu version of SotN. As a Metroidvania back-scratcher, it's got the right shape and idea, but the edges are a little rough, there's a plasticky feel to the surface, and the paint job is a little sloppy. But at the end of the day, it'll scratch the itch just fine.

Finally, we have one of these that feels more inspired by Order of Ecclesia (and I suppose Simon's Quest) than the million games in this genre that seem to have thought that SOTN was the peak so why bother trying anything else. That's not to say that this game is especially bold or original mechanically or aesthetically. However, it's still easily one of the best search em' ups that has been made in the last decade. Incredibly well-thought out map design keeps the pace steady. Very little required backtracking and when you do have to go back somewhere the movement options that were opened up makes it feel fast, fun and fresh. The slide alone is maybe the best ever slide in one of these. Huge distance and almost non-existent recovery make going anywhere a delight. It's a shame that there is no power up to make it do damage. The soundtrack is shockingly vast and almost all of the tracks are great. The sprite work is very charming and winningly detailed. Combat is surprisingly well-balanced for one of these (until you get to the castle). There are still god weapons and cheese strats, but it takes a little more work to find them than usual. Just a solidly constructed game on every level. I don't really have a lot of major gripes other than finding some hitboxes for certain bosses to be unclear and/or strange and that some of the platforming sections run a bit long. In closing, I want to say that I support the many instant kills in this and hope that even more or added in any future updates. Brings some La Mulana flavor that is sorely lacking in its peers. I suppose now is finally the time to go back and play Migami's fan games. Easy recommend for anyone who has had any amount of fun with a Castlevania game before.

Just finished 100% game. Good : - If you like classic RPG Castlevania-like games and you're tired of the Hollow-Knight type it's perfect for you - Plenty of love for the players, with hidden areas, secrets, weapons. The more you play the more exciting the game gets. - Atmosphere is grim and well crafted with proper SFX and music Less Good : - Sometimes making the player die for no reason with a save point system is frustrating - Moving the character is sometimes a little too clunky at first but eventually you'll move smoothly - While open world being a key component of such games, sometimes you might find yourself being stuck and it can get frustrating. Overall 8/10 Castlevania. If you're a fan of SOTN and Aria type games don't hesitate a second. If you're more of the HK/Ender Lilies type of game you might find yourself having less fun.

Once again Migami Games understands completely what makes Castlevania great while still creating a game with it's own identity. I'm only 4 hours in and it's already blown away my original expectations from the demo.
