Love this game. Played it a little before the servers shut down. A lot of reviews here are referencing rampant cheating, and of course there is. Cheating is a problem in every. But it is not nearly at the level people make it out to be. 3 very skilled players who have 10k hours on this game could easily take out 12 people. The better you get at the game the less cheating you see.
I played Gloria Victis when it came out of EA until it shut down 6 months later. It was a shock. The game was unique, I met some cool people, and it was gone so fast. I found myself missing it. I understand why the devs burned out, but before they left they had made something special. Now, out of nowhere, it's back! After playing in the open betas, I can say that Gloria Victis deserved to be missed. There is jank, so if you're looking for AAA polish, look elsewhere. The depth in this world is amazing though, and there are so many design decisions that find just the right balance between fun and challenging. Its the most skill-dependent MMORPG I've played. It combines a highly detailed MMO world with the directional combat of a game like M&B Warband. This combat is fun and rewarding with a sky high ceiling. For a medieval online PVP-focused game, I've met a lot of friendly players. I play on the underdog faction which seems to pull people together, and veteran players are rewarded for helping low levels. I know some gamers will not play because of the PVP, but if you're willing to dip your toe in, there's PVE content, too. The crafting system is extensive, and builders are needed to repair and upgrade alliance fortresses. You can even design and build your own guild fortress. There's a large area with no PVP, but to get better items you will need to venture out. You can fast travel to castles your nation controls and be safe behind the walls and often outside them too. Only the middle of the large map has restricted looting. Its dangerous to go into the loot zone alone, but if you ask you can often find players who hang out in there and like to team up. I've very appreciative of Gamigo for republishing Gloria Victis and bringing it back. The future's obviously up in the air. I hope the new devs realize what they have here. The original devs were constantly improving and I hope they continue that, but without losing sight of what makes this game special. I was worried they might increase the grind or introduce P2W, but I'm happy to say that so far they haven't. Long live Gloria Victis!
This game isn't the prettiest and the movement is a bit janky at times, but if you wish to slaughter nerds while defending or attacking a castle in the name of your chosen side. Then give this game a try, its not for everyone but it does have large scale battles in real time, none of that instanced 40 v 40 BS like other games. Reinforcements can arrive and turn the tide of every battle. Good luck out there.
This game is not perfect and the servers need some love, but I love this game. It scratches so many itches at once for me personally. Dense crafting system, super fun skill based melee, and faction warfare on constantly changing front lines. Hoping this game sticks around for a while.
