I played Gloria Victis when it came out of EA in January 2023 until it shut down 6 months later. It was a shock and it was sad. The time was so short that it almost felt like a dream and I missed it. I understand that the devs really did burn out, but they had made something special. Now, out of nowhere, it's back! After playing again, I can say that Gloria Victis deserved to be missed. There is jank, so if you're looking for AAA polish, look elsewhere. The depth in this world is amazing though, and there are so many design decisions that find just the right balance between fun and challenging. Its the most skill-dependent MMORPG I've played. It combines a highly detailed MMO world with the directional combat of a game like M&B Warband. This combat is fun and rewarding with a sky high ceiling. For a medieval online PVP-focused game, I've met a lot of friendly players. I play on the underdog faction which seems to pull people together, and veteran players are rewarded for helping low levels. I know some gamers will not play because of the PVP, but if you're willing to dip your toe in, there's PVE content, too. The crafting system is extensive, and builders are needed to repair and upgrade alliance fortresses. You can even design and build your own guild fortress. There's a large area with no PVP, but to get better items you'll need to venture out. You can fast travel to castles your nation controls and be safe behind the walls and often outside them too. The middle of the map has restricted looting. Its dangerous to go into the loot zone alone, but other players often team up and that is fun! I've very appreciative of Gamigo for republishing Gloria Victis and bringing it back. The future's obviously up in the air. I hope the new devs realize what they have here. The original devs were constantly improving and I hope they continue that, but without losing sight of what makes this game special. Also, I'm aware of the speculation that this is a cash grab and they might exploit the player base. If that turns out to be the case, I will change my recommendation. The game is alive again so there's reason for hope.

Welcome back, Gloria Victis <3 I have 2k hours in this game so I'll try to do my best to give people the info they need. When you start, you may find yourself wondering why many fans of directional medieval combat (myself included) consider this the best iteration of the genre. I'll be honest, the new player experience is rough. The quests are repetitive and don't make much sense, the movement will look weird compared to other games, and the combat has a learning curve. It's basically just something you have to get through to get to the meat of the game. And this isn't a "game starts at level 60" grind like in WoW. You will be able to jump into the PvP battles after a handful of hours going through the main quest. It is not a bad grind, it's just a subpar first impression. Please stick it out and you'll find something truly special. Now onto the things that make it special: - Persistent world PvP with server sizes that foster a real community. It's just the right size that you eventually know everyone on the server; The legendary duelists, the shotcalling vets who lead large guilds, the lovable town fool, the troll who guilds have blacklisted, the small but skilled guild that is feared on the battleground, etc. You can genuinely make a name for yourself and the community lore goes deep. Ask a vet about a nation betraying a nation alliance and you'll feel like you're in an episode of Game of Thrones. - The Combat. The directional combat feels better than any directional game I've ever played. The skill ceiling is incredibly high and the cheese-mechanics associated with this genre are low. It's more about timing and practice than anything else. I've never experienced a more satisfying progression in a game than improving in GV combat skills and that feeling of getting better. How do I explain that feeling? It's less like a traditional sense of progression in a video game and more like going to the gym to play basketball, putting up thousands of shots and starting to see an improvement in your jump shot. It's visceral. It's true progress. (advice: start messing with keybinds early to find what works for you) Those are the two biggest things for me. If you're a crafter, there is a deep crafting system to support the war effort. This game is perfectly ripe for RP guilds if that's your thing. The middle of the map is a loot zone with rare materials for crafting (enter with caution, as vets have a tendency to kill and humiliate by stealing your pants lol). Castle sieges can last for hours with intense back-and-forth. I can count on one hand the number of video games I have truly loved in my life, and Gloria Victis is one of them.

This game is unique. It is a sword swinging genre. You are warrior in the olden times. Massive 100v100 fights. Get the feel of what it was like to be in the chaos of large battles, swords and shields clanging in your ears. Every character another player like you trying to survive the madness. Open world skirmishes and pvp. Castle sieges and guild fights. Claim your territory and defend against rival guilds. Manly 1v1 duels of honor. One of my all time favorites. This game coming back to life is like a dream come true for me. I missed it and was looking for a game like it, alas none are there. This is the only of its kind. Give it a chance! Gamigo is bringing this gem back to life. I would recomend this to anyone who likes swinging sword skill games, or has interest in the genre.

Sometimes I feel nostalgic about this medieval MMO. It was a great game with great community. I honestly had high hopes of this game and now it's lost. Just put the servers back online!
