An absolute must-try for anyone remotely interested in/attached to dragons or the natural world. 11/10 if you're Otherkin. When I got to the final scene of this game, it took me twenty minutes of agonising debating to reach a decision. Then after I watched my decisions unfold I collapsed into bed and cried for a good half an hour more. Ultimately, there are only a limited amount of set endings to this game, but the journey there is so utterly diverse, beautiful and bizarre that it doesn't matter, and they all play out slightly differently depending on your decisions leading up to that point. Over all, this is a beautiful work of multi-media art, the music, the scenery, the characters, the storytelling are all witty, terrifying and stunning at the same time. The gameplay is simple and takes a backseat after a two or three runs if you play it smart, so if you're not into it, a little bit of grinding is all it takes and the vague roguelikes mechanics will have you strong enough to breeze through all but the hardest encounters, especially if you look out for some of the combat items to help you through those. Just... don't fuck with the ferret at first. Either way, be expected to die atleast once before you beat the game. Nature isn't kind, but you may be blessed yet.

As an author, it is rare to encounter something that leaves me utterly incapable of describing it. Yet, this game - it has done so, many times over. The best I could ever attempt to describe this game is as the world’s most immersive and encompassing art gallery ever made. Yet, much like one may talk of one the scenes in the game where the protagonist sings a True Song to the spirit of fire within a small pond… I shall attempt to weakly point toward the Truth. Golden treasure is a game where you play as a great Draak-kin. This young Draak comes to terms with, learns and adapts to the world they are presented, a journey you are allowed to participate in. The game, seen from just a gameplay perspective is a rogue-lite survival game with resource and “stat” management elements. But where this game really shines is by just how well every element of the story, world, characters, and yes even the gameplay connects. The one heightens the other, and vice versa. The point where I truly struggle to formulate just how - good - this game is, is when it comes to the “cutscenes” themselves. The artwork in these scenes of our main character aren’t just artworks. First of all, the team uses a very sophisticated technique where the scene is multi-layered to create a sense of 3D space, even though the art itself is only 2D. Then comes the music, sounds… I shall not attempt to describe it, for any attempt at doing so would not do it justice. This isn’t even a recommendation. You won’t understand what you have missed unless you buy it, and play it. Even if you just test out the Demo (which is free) you will at least understand the game. For the only way you can understand it in a way that actually does it justice is to experience it for yourself. As for my personal opinion, this will forever be the best game I have ever played. This truly is the Golden Treasure. May you be blessed.

so i'm going to start with the things i did NOT like about this game: 1. the timer. there's this arbitrary timer that transitions you to the next part of the game, like it or not. i understand why it's there, to make the game replayable, but it just stops you from experiencing the full breadth of the game in one playthrough. 2. speaking of replayability, it's not great. the fact you have to click through a bunch of text, do all the mini-games, and so on just to get to one event/get one tarot/try some route makes it very unappealing. and this game really wants you to replay (you need to get every tarot to get the secret ending, and that's impossible to do on one playthrough due to the timer). 3. the blend between visual novel and rogue-lite. this game would have been better if it just stayed a visual novel. i definitely see what the developers were going for in the rogue-lite elements, but it ultimately falls flat (and honestly hurts replayability despite being intended to help it). hunting is pretty good but barebones and becomes mindless quickly. combat could be a lot more, but due to the rock-paper-scissors combat style you are encouraged to just spam earth element attacks (that is, the element that does not counter or get countered) in all combat encounters except in hunting ones against animals you know the pattern of. this spaminess is encouraged even more once you are at high elemental mastery, because you take less and deal more damage to the opponent regardless. the tarot system is okay, but you can get so many tarots in part 2 that you can just breeze through the whole game on another playthrough, and that's not very fun. overall, what's here seems like a framework. i hope this will be improved upon in this game's sequel, because it could really be something special. 4. the dungeons. they're just mazes with occasional weak enemies. annoying and time-consuming. the test of wisdom had some great moments, but the dungeons are just annoying. so you may read that and think. "huh, with how many problems this game seems to have, why is this guy recommending it?" well, it's because of just how beautiful this game is. the writing style being so vague and using unclear terms adds to the mystique of the game, and it sells the idea of you being a young dragon learning about and exploring the world. the game is very thoughtful and touching; it presented ideas that maybe i had acknowledged but hadn't thought about until playing this game. the music is great, it suits the game well and i could not get tired of listening to it. the images are beautiful (or hideous when it suits the scene), and that coupled with the amazing sound design and the writing really makes you feel the moment you're in. i was scared when the player character was scared, angry when they were, sad when they were, awestruck when they were, and exulted when they were. overall, the game gets the strongest recommendation i could give it to anyone who might be remotely into it.

This game broke me. In a good way. For most, I imagine it is a visceral look into the mind of something distinctly inhuman, and a beautiful journey. Does humanity seem alien, or recognizable, I wonder? For fellow kin, I imagine it is an all too brief respite from the is in favour of the should-have-been, vividly illustrated by someone who truly gets it. It is a deep pain, but one of being seen. And for that, I am profoundly thankful. Whichever camp you may find yourself in, I would recommend it without reservation.

How does one review something that has touched me on such a profound level? Something that has reached into the very depths of my soul and revealed something hidden there, long forgotten? Still, I will make the attempt. This isn't a game, it is a masterpiece of writing! But to analyze it, it is a text based adventure game with some RPG skill checks as well as rouge-lite elements (meaning you gradually get a bit stronger with each run by acquiring animal masteries and tarot cards). Each day you have some actions to take, hunt to replenish your energy bar (the yellow bar at the bottom), explore new areas or events, or rest to heal a bit if injured. Each of the 3 sections you get to explore have many things to see, and paths to walk, and choices to take. As far as game design goes, I'm not one for visual novels most of the time, however this scratches a good itch. For the story, I don't know where to begin other than to call it a masterpiece among masterpieces! It resonated extremely deeply with me, and I will openly admit I cried a good bit during this game (in one instance, for an hour before I could return to the screen). It's not due to sadness specifically, but also due to beauty and hope! It... changed how I view the world and myself. If you have played the Talos Principle, and enjoyed that story, you'll love this! The writing isn't preachy or showing any choice as "right" or "wrong". You can be very compassionate to everything, even if it's trying to kill you, or you can slaughter everything in your path, including the defenseless. The game never ridicules you for doing so, but each choice does carry consequences, as it does in life. The music and sound design are top notch! The slow, beautiful piano and orchestral pieces lend to an atmosphere of gentle reflection, and are thought provoking backdrop. The sound design is one of the best in a game, helping you feel like you are truly in the environment! The gameplay is solid, as described above. Each day, you may hunt, explore, or experience events. Sometimes you can go to the same location multiple times for quest lines, but often most places can be experienced once. These, and the choices you make, improve your stats and reputation points. Hunting is a serviceable system of sneaking up on prey, pursuing it if needed, and attacking it. I'd recommend going through the tutorial at least once. The game gives you 2 dream deaths, before the 3rd permanent death. Meaning the player has 3 lives in total. Additionally, the game saves often, immediately after each choice, and when clicking the swirly Draak icon, usually at the end of a game day. You can also have multiple playthoughs of the game active, should you be sharing the game with others in real life. I have played many games and seen many things in my 30 years alive, some have stayed with me, fewer still have shaped me, but no game I have played have changed me like this has! It joins a set of only 3 pieces of media in existence that I hold closer than anything else, and of those, it's one of the most powerful. It broke me in the best way possible! I will be forever grateful for those at Dreaming Door studios for making this game a reality! The bottom line is this, if you want a immaculately written dragon life sim that makes you think about everything, I'd wholeheartedly recommend giving it a shot! It's challenging, but failure is a better teacher than success. Guides do exist of course if you are particularly struggling, but I'd recommend only as a last resort. Most of the fun for me was figuring things out on my own, and overcoming the challenges presented to me. Finding about this games existence was one of the best things to happen to me! TL:DR This is a dragon life sim where you go through the daily challenges of being a dragon. You are free to do as you wish, though each decision has consequences on yourself and the surroundings. It's a visual novel with skill checks and rouge-lite elements. May you be blessed!
