The year was 2001, friend had PS2. Every day after school we would sink hours into the magical 3D world of chaos that was emerging in front of our eyes for the first time. We certainly broke at least two dual shock controllers inputting the cheats :D Action is fast for todays standards, missions are quick, but it throws me back to that times of no worries except where to run over another hooker... Played on Steam Deck.

Get into a Manana, park in the high rise near your first hideout, and listen to KJAH while it's raining. It's the most comfy experience. Plus you might see people just beat each other to death, then an ambulance comes up, pancakes another random person, and revives the first person who got beaten to death. I think this series was at its best when it was small, simple, enclosed, and goofy like this, where every corner was some identifiable landmark.

I want to start off by saying I think people would generally enjoy GTA3 more if they stopped trying to play it like one of the more modern titles. You kind of have to meet this one halfway to have fun with it. Yeah, Claude controls/shoots a little sluggishly and can't bail out of vehicles, but the game itself is also built around those limitations. GTA3 has a surprising amount of player expression in that the devs aren't handholding you during missions as much compared to later titles in the series. There are almost always multiple ways to succeed, so if you take your time and assess your surroundings/situations more, I think you're much more likely to have a good time. Also, if you plan on going for 100%, do the hospital, vigilante, and firetruck missions first thing and the Diablo phone calls as soon as you can. For this specific edition: I did a 100% run of the game and everything ran great. The graphics were very jarring for me at first, but I got used to them pretty quickly and it wasn't a deal breaker or anything. I think the QoL autosave really elevates this edition. You can use emergency vehicles or taxis to save the game pretty much anywhere by triggering a mission and cancelling it, which makes stuff like unique jumps/hidden packages/etc MUCH less time consuming if something unexpected happens. Funnily enough, I didn't bother with modern controls. I tried them for a bit, but I genuinely think the OG controls work better and ended up toggling them off in the menu. This isn't my favorite GTA or anything, but it's very playable and can absolutely be a good time if you're willing to give it a chance.

I know people clown on the Definitive Edition versions of the GTA trilogy a lot...and not entirely without reason. After all, at launch, these games were unfaithful cash grabs at best and unplayable at worst. However, most of these issues have been eliminated, rendering GTA III - The Definitive Edition very much playable and —believe it or not— enjoyable as well. Still, the damage has been done. If Rockstar (as an extension of Grove Street Games ) has lost your trust for such an extreme delay in delivering the appropriate solutions, that is valid and understandable. In that case, I do not recommend you support them. Personally, I held off until this year to pull the trigger, seeing as I was dissatisfied with what I had been hearing/reading about these games from the start. I can only say I'm glad I have, as it was worth the wait. What I'm not terribly happy to have waited on so long, though, is to actually play through the entirety of GTA III. That's right; while I had previously experienced GTA III, Liberty City Stories, & GTA IV, I had actually never finished any of them. It's no understatement that I had denied myself a true classic in GTA III, and I'm glad I've finally taken the plunge. Thanks to NVIDIA Game Filters and a short to moderate list of mods, I was able to turn the so-called 'Definitive Edition' of GTA III into a truly definitive edition of the title. Truthfully, this is how the game should be experienced, as it's much more playable, stable, and honestly...pleasant to the eye. But, again, I recommend using some external resources to get to that point. Is GTA III - The Definitive Edition perfect? No, but I firmly believe anyone can have a great time experiencing this classic this way — whether for the first, second, or 87th time. Just don't try to go swimming. Now, if you'll excuse me; I've got en empire to run. (But holy crap — would it have killed GSG to make the gangs less hostile this time around?!)

I played GTA 3 as a kid, so when the Definitive Edition came out, I couldn’t resist checking it out. At first, it felt great to return to Liberty City — so many memories came rushing back. But after a few hours, my excitement started to fade. The graphics are definitely improved: lighting, reflections, and weather effects look more modern. The city feels a bit more alive, and the updated controls — especially driving — are more in line with newer GTA titles, which makes the gameplay smoother. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. The game is full of bugs, performance issues, and weird character models. Some faces look like they were made in a rush, and the animations feel stiff. The game also lost part of its original charm — some iconic music is gone, and the cutscenes feel shorter and less impactful. If you’re in it just for the nostalgia, it’s passable. But if you’re hoping for a proper remaster that honors the original — this isn’t quite it. Rating: 6/10 A nostalgic trip, but not the return Liberty City truly deserved.
