One of the most passionate and phenomenal works I've ever played. Despite me being an absolute FPS-head, this fixed-camera survival horror game has turned me into a fixed-attention fanatic. Overall, huge kudos to Malformation Games for this piece of art and congratulations on your first release! From the original soundtrack and scoring, to the level design, world building, and to the gameplay itself, everything about this game is awesome. As of this review, yes; there are some optimization bugs and GPU utilization issues (that were quickly addressed and being worked on), but nothing on my end that took away from enjoying the game. I just wanted to put it out there that I'm not ignoring this but also that it isn't a dealbreaker whatsoever. Oh, and for the love of god, this is a fixed-camera game; DO NOT USE MODERN CONTROLS. These games are built with tank controls in mind and it only takes a little bit of gameplay to get used to. Using "Modern" controls in a game built to be retro makes no sense but is there as an option. Ground Zero, despite being a "Resident Evil clone" as it's primary inspiration alongside Silent Hill does a wonderful job establishing its own identity and world. The environments are grandiose and dilapidated yet full of life (a very invasive life that is, haha) and the camera angles exemplify the immense amount of love poured into it all. There's a huge variety of weapons, a large amount of replayability via different story routes/decisions and challenges, a proper roster of enemies to face, and overall just a fresh take on the genre. This game is hard, by the way. Don't come in expecting a cakewalk but also don't expect artificial or unfair difficulty either. This game really engages you and makes you think outside the box. My only real gripes with the game is that the combat feels a bit lackluster, primarily with melee (to which I have no constructive criticism for as I have no idea what would make it feel better) and the "critical shot" system. There's hardly any punishment for the use of critical shots except wasting 1 ammo and if you do get it, any gun will 1-shot kill anything except bosses even if it isn't a headshot . For the sake of ammo economy, you should be doing this at all times and personally, I find that a bit cheesy as it effectively makes every enemy feel like fodder. Otherwise, it is up to the player to make self-imposed rules to not use an overpowered mechanic in the game. Even without critical shots, the game provides you with a generous amount of ammo on the base difficulties (Easy/Normal/Hard) and you're only really required to pick your fights on the higher difficulties. As it stands right now, critical hits are purely RNG with headshots and specific weapons having higher rates. I think critical shots should not be an instakill, but instead be 3x damage and procurable upon deliberate headshot or something, giving it more skill expression and less excessive value. Aside from this, I have 0 other qualms with the game aside from some nitpicky things about the UI and UX, but nothing has overshadowed how much I enjoy Ground Zero. Well done, Malformation Games. You made a certified classic. <3 Here's to hoping for some cool updates in the future!

BUYER BEWARE. THERE IS NO SPRINT TOGGLE/ALWAYS RUN OPTION. Your pinky WILL get tired from holding the shift key to run or whatever you change it to. I usually don't review games, usually only during steam events asking to update or make a new review. The game does usually use your GPU around max, and can run hot. So, buyer beware if you live in a inhospitable heat zone or have a laptop that'll melt through a table or itself. Good game though. Only part that runs like absolute garbo is the heavy rain section you spend around.. 20-30 minutes? walking through with the AI partner acting as a infinite ammo walking turret that gives you enemies with perfect genome scanner quality. Damn, this was one of the BEST indie survival horror games i've played in recent times, or hell, ever. I will however say, it does have balancing issues straight from the beginning. It is absolutely MISERELY with the ammo economy at the beginning of the game. That clears up around the time you finish the hospital or police station. You'll be swimming in ammo at that point if you keep up with using mostly Critical Hit aimed shots. The game is mostly built around critical hit shots, and you WILL absolutely suffer in the early game if you don't conform around it. After 50% of the game you can start to be less stingy with your ammo. You absolutely do not need to stockpile a horde of ammo by the end, the final fight has a rocket launcher that has infinite reloads from a nearby box. I'd even go for to recommend making a savepoint before the end as a backup and selling most of your gear and heals that you won't be using for the final fight (You do still need ammo for mobs that spawn during the fight, but you're not gonna need a whole arsenal.) Don't be stingy with the high power ammunition. Use it where appropiate. i ended up with around 27+ rounds at the end. Never heal or buff without it being 3 syringes of the same type of color. Always a full green, or red, or blue to get permanent buffs. With maxed out health and defense you're a straight up concrete wall through the whole game. Don't got to worry about points either since you'll be selling all the red and blue vials once you're maxed out around the time you get past the big rain storm.

I went into this game with absolutely no expectations, so imagine my surprise when Ground Zero wound up being perhaps the best homage to classic Capcom survival horror titles to date, without just being a 1:1 copy of any of them. On top of that, it features as much, if not more content than even modern AAA horror titles. I played far from optimally for my first run (Hard difficulty), and got graded accordingly at the end (E...feels like it's been awhile since a horror game actually had some tough grading), but I feel like the average first playthrough will still be around 15-20 hours. Beating the game once also unlocks three more difficulty options, ramping up enemy aggression, reducing healing capacity, and removing autosaves, as well as a full blown time attack mode where you play as one of three characters with their own loadouts, racing against the clock through familiar levels for points. The game also has separate combat and puzzle difficulties, which is always a nice feature. There are numerous unlockable outfits and cosmetics, with the first outfit unlocking if you complete the training from the main menu; good if you're not a huge fan of the default clothing. It's also a complete tutorial level that lets you run around the HQ lobby and gun ranges, which is a welcome surprise. There are RE3-style choices to make periodically throughout the game, with the most substantial one being a decision to go to either a Hospital (more medical serums, used to upgrade stats, and a corrosive knife) or Police Station (more weapons early and a charging electrical knife). However, I felt it was a bit of an underutilized mechanic by the end. I would have liked to see one more split choice before the end, perhaps choosing between the University and making the Zoo a more complex level with its own new enemy type ala Outbreak . It's still a nice feature for repeat playthroughs. The plot wasn't overly complex, but I was surprised at how much I came to like the twin protagonists. The dynamic between their more by-the-book and by-the-heart philosophies lead to some heated conversations and amusing banter, without being too overbearing. The fixed camera was often utilized to great effect, with interesting angles and sneaky enemy placement keeping the tension high. You can also find a scope attachment that allows any gun to switch to first person view for more precise aiming. You can also still use the game's "critical shot" mechanic, which lets you time a button press to one-tap most regular enemies, while in scoped view. The game offers both classic tank controls and more modern controls. I used tank controls, but it's nice to have the option for those not overly familiar with the genre's classics. Manually aiming can be a bit finicky, but it's also mostly unnecessary, as you can lock on and switch targets with a button press. I didn't have too much issue with it, though aiming defaulting to the nearest enemy sometimes made it tricky to switch to shooting environmental hazards like barrels in the heat of combat. On the topic of performance, I only had one crash in my 20+ hour playthrough, and only noticed some fps issues on a couple screens that tried for some unorthodox moving camera angles. I do think there could stand to be some better optimization here though. Enemy designs are appropriately gruesome, with twitching movements and strange growths and (most importantly) incredibly distinctive and unsettling noises. There's decent variety, though I would have liked to see a couple more types, especially in the Zoo . I would say that the pacing does hitch a bit post University , and like even official Resident Evil titles the "lab" equivalent isn't my favorite bit, but given the amount of ground our protagonists have to cover I for the most part didn't really get the sense of "padding". I could gush about this game all day, so I'll cut the review here. For me this easily stands tall among the other indie horror greats like Tormented Souls, Signalis, and Crow Country. 100% recommended for any long-time fan of the genre.

I dunno, it's kind of a mixed bag for me but I do recommend it because it at least tried to be its own thing. The visuals are amazing, the camera angles are chef's kiss and even the character design of Seo-Yeon in itself is a reference to the old survival horror classics (Dino Crisis and Resident Evil) and I think her outfit is a mix of colors for the Korean flag. Game's really good if you don't mind the padded pacing, weak dialogue, clunky menus and their lackluster design (btw if you pause next to a door and then resume, the game thinks you want to use the door again), a map that has no legend nor options to toggle floors and many many issues like the bloated mechanics at your disposal but only 1 of them rules all. (you'll understand it better if you try your hand at this game). In a way, this game reminds me of the early 2000s games like Obscure where you have a lot going on at once and things to pay attention to but don't necessarily complement each other and the maker/dev just threw everything in their hand on the table in one fell swoop. Anyhoo I hit the 8 hour mark and still have not finished the game. Spent last night only playing this till 5 am. Now I am not complaining at all, but the padded gameplay could use a bit of trimming because so many of the rooms in every map are there to hold 1 key item so that you go to the other end of another corner to unlock something and so on and so forth. Other games in this medium have their maps like an organized building/structure; an east wing, a center and a west wing or something along the lines of that. If you're willing to spend your hard earned money on this, sure you can go for it but expect a lot of pacing issues. Personally? I think this is one of those games where you open a music playlist and just enjoy zombie survival horror fun.
