Replayed for the first time in ~15 years and honestly, I understand now why people still talk about the original. The biggest surprise wasn't nostalgia. It was how much Capcom changed in the remake. Same setting, same characters, same lore, but they feel like two completely different games. What I liked most in the original is the story and character interactions. Ada is much more involved in the plot, Birkin family gets more screen time, and Claire, Leon, Sherry and Annette feel connected throughout the whole game. It also fits first game better, especially with Ada's backstory and Umbrella investigation. You actually spend a lot of time with the main cast instead of just meeting them for a few cutscenes. The atmosphere of Raccoon City is fantastic. The sound design sells the feeling that the city is completely dead and beyond saving. The opening streets are still some of the best parts of the game. The A/B scenario system is also great. Decisions from your first run carry into the second one, enemy placements change, routes change, and the second playthrough feels different enough to justify playing it. That said, the game definitely shows its age. Tank controls take time to adjust to, boss fights are simple compared to modern standards, and once you leave the police station the pacing becomes extremely fast. The sewers and lab feel much shorter than I remembered and you're basically sprinting toward the ending. After replaying the original, I don't think RE2 Remake replaced it. They're both worth playing. The remake improved many things, but the original still has strengths that were lost along the way. A classic for a reason.

I was working at Pizza Hut when this title was released and I used my very first paycheck to buy a PS1 along with RE2. I had nowhere near enough money to pay for everything so my mom spotted me the difference. I spent many hours of my youth playing this game and it still holds a very special place in my heart. I remember marveling over how great the graphics looked back then. Well, the game doesn't look as awesome as it did in 1998 but that's okay because I don't either. Things get old and that's life. It was pretty fun though, taking a walk down memory lane.

Unfortunately, I'll never be able to fully explain how special this game is to me because words simply can't describe it. OG Resident Evil 2 isn't just my favorite in the series, it's also the best game ever made for me. This was Hideki Kamiya's first game as director. His excitement and passion were perfectly captured in the play. The storytelling, impeccable atmosphere, magnificent creature designs, perfect puzzles, peaceful sountracks and most importantly voice acting. Everyone is perfect but Paul Haddad (Leon voice actor) was something else. He holds a very special place in my heart. I often talked to him on Facebook. I remember he showed me his movie collection. He was depressed that things weren't going well for him before he passed away due to his mental health and physical health and was struggling financially too. I think he deserved more praise in the acting field as a voice actor and should've gotten more parts because he was such a talented voice actor. He unfortunately lost his battle with cancer back in 2020. I even spoke to his brother, Matthew Haddad. And he didn't even know his brother was famous. He was very happy when people sent him condolences. RE2make was good, but unfortunately I don't think it can ever replace the original because there were things I really didn't like about the Remake. Therefore, I recommend everyone play the original version. It costs almost as much as a bar of chocolate anyway. Besides, I don't know who it is, but there's an employee at Capcom who really loves adding DRM to old games. Tell that guy to stop doing it because this is almost 30 years old. Enjoy the game.
