March 2026
Yes, I totally recommend Guilty Gear -STRIVE- I've been a fan of Guilty Gear since Guilty Gear XRD SIGN, which made me fall in love with everything related to the series. Mainly the story. However, I can say that GG Strive took a direction so incredibly different from the previous entries, that it took me 5 YEARS to accept that yeah, GG STRIVE is a great game and so much fun that even if its appealing to a more casual audience, it managed to remain a Guilty Gear game. But what happened? What happened is that I hated this game more than anything. I couldn't accept that a Guilty Gear game was making so much decisions to appeal to a wider audience. I was saying things like GG is losing its identity. What the hell is wrong with the devs? Why is the UI so ugly and simple? What is wrong with the sheer lack of ROCK ESTHETIC? Why the characters deals so much damage and matches are so short? and wall breaks? Nah, I'm gonna break this game In half . I know. I know. So lame, right? Well, then I just forgot the game existed in the first place for 5 years and moved on. Until... GG STRIVE 2.0 The version 2.0 gets announced and the Fighting Game community goes wild. I was seeing how much the game changed and decided to give it a new chance and bought it again here on steam. And yeah, I gotta say: I love when I'm proven wrong and can be adult enough to be able to change my mind, because OH BOY THIS GAME ROCKS!! (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Blazing song drops lol). FIRST, THE STORY If you new to GG and wants to appreciate the story, give up right now. You will not enjoy it haha. Let me explain. As I said, I adore GG lore and its story is one of the most well developed that I've seen in a fighting game. Arc System Works has put... well, a lot of WORK into the world building, characters, their relationship, terms, powers and you can say that here, the story matters! However, Strive is the endgame of all the story so far. Which means that, since the first GG game on PS1, the story is being developed until we arrive at its big finale, which is Strive. So you will not understand anything. You'll get confused and lose a lot of plot points. So before going into it, watch some lore videos and the story mode from the previous games officially available on YT. https://youtu.be/gQ9Cd4MKqHs?si=SNmBH3i8UZ3NFCrC Note: The Story Mode in all GG games since XRD SIGN are movies and do not contain gameplay sections. Just sit and enjoy it like you're watching 6 hours of anime haha. THE GAMEPLAY AND MODES "Easy to pick up and hard to master". That's basically what the gameplay of Strive is. Different from the previous entries, this one simplifies a lot of its mechanics and let players enjoy the game even if they are not fighting game players. But if you decide to get really into it, you're in for a journey of self discovery and discipline, because you'll need all the patience in the world to be able to learn: [*]Roman Cancel (RC) [*]Blue, Red, Purple and Yellow Roman Cancel [*]Burst [*]Faultless Defense [*]Dust And much more. Thankfully, the game counts with an extensive Mission Mode which will teach you about every mechanic thoroughly. Also for the basics, you'll have a simple tutorial to help you get your first steps into its gameplay. The game offers plenty of offline modes for us to enjoy, which includes Arcade, Survival, Three Team mode, Training and VS. For the online content, you'll have (As of now): [*]Ranked Matches [*]Casual Matches [*]Lobbies (in form of the Towers) [*]Room Match [*]Customizable Profile All in all, you'll have plenty of content to enjoy in this game even if you prefer to play it offline. CONCLUSION AND THE FUTURE Guilty Gear -STRIVE- not only did present me with a personal journey of accepting change as a good thing and respecting that, but also was the game that finally put Arc System Works on the map. Even with the success of Dragon Ball FighterZ, it was STRIVE that made rollback netcode the standard for Fighting games and made everyone acknowledge Arcsys as a strong and prestigious fighting developer. It goes to show how many good decisions they made for this game as well as its community. Of course, there were also bad decisions and occasionally fall offs, however both community and developer continued to strive for the betterment of the game. And with the 2.0 version on the horizon, we can expect continuous support for Strive with new modes, characters that we love and a lot of content. So I appreciate all of you who took the time to read this. And yeah, go there and play GG Strive! Let's rock!
