I'm giving this a "recommended" review because I think the product has value to a specific audience; I just don't think it hit for me but I feel like this is *definitely* someone's niche dream game. Artistically, the game really feels like it was originally a Game Boy or Game Boy Color game that someone went back and added a *ton* of detail to...but I could also see someone doing a "demake" of this for fun and it still being totally playable on old hardware. Sound effects were all passable, no voice work to speak of. Music ran from catchy background to so generic it might have been white noise. Level design is super Game Boy-esque; every level is basically a series of short "rooms" that you get through to get to the next one. The titular Gunbrella allows you to bypass most of the major hazards pretty easily and the platforming never hits the level of an even good platformer, but it's passable. Combat feels very one dimensional, if very fast; the gunbrella gives you a surprising amount of mobility and defense in fights and since even the most harried fights are rarely more than two one one, it never really "hits" - you're never fighting hard enough to feel like a bad ass, but you're also forced to be at least somewhat mobile or the bad guys end up chunking you. This is somewhat punctuated by long stretches of "this is a game I could give to a young nephew and not have to worry about the difficulty level" that suddenly become "oh the boss difficulty level spikes significantly; gimme that controller, Timmy." You never "get good" at the game, but you're forced to "be good" for very brief stretches before settling in for more long stretches of easy. Storywise, this wants to feel like Sanabi or John Wick or any other "hero has their loved one murdered and is out for blood" plot, but it never really hits because you never really feel any way about Murray (the hero) because he doesn't talk. There's no exposition, all of the story beats are assumptive...even the eldritch horror stuff doesn't ever really go anywhere except as minor occasional set dressing. The game doesn't even really know what it wants to be tonally - there's some really dark stuff in here about sacrificing children so rich people can be immortal, but that's off set by weird zany characters straight out of a GBA game or scenes where like you accompany a family of hikers up a mountain...and then a scene later, you encounter the kid from the family and he's like "♥♥♥♥ them, this dude using me for child labor is my real fam!" There's tons of profanity and weirdly animated blood...but also like, animated bees are a major enemy in the game that are annoying. Like, what? I think this one has a really specific audience, which is someone who is seeking what feels like an authentically designed old school Game Boy game with a modern color palate. It's really short (if you soldiered through it, you can clear it in an afternoon) so it might also be for people who just want a fun old school romp - but given the number of exceptional platformers that have come out in the last several years, it is kind of difficult to recommend this one without going through all the weird foibles AND a list of other games that are just better. Maybe you'll play it and love it and find it charming. I found myself forcing myself to get to the end. Only recommended with caveats; probably a pass for most.

This is a great little game. Kind of partly a 2d platformer, it's not really a metroidvania. But has some really fun movement and solid mechanics for doing combat or battles with enemies. Not super difficult on the default difficulty, honestly I think the boss that gave me the most difficulty was the 1st one when you're still building the muscle memory of what buttons to press and how to move around fluidly with the gunbrella and getting used to all of that still. Fun dialogue and a nice solid short (under 15 hours) compact game. It does have a little bit of replayability if you're wanting to get all of the achievements as there are a couple choices in the game that close off other paths. Highly recommended.

10/10 I loved it. Played it thrice on switch, then night a copy on steam. Beautiful pixel art. Great game feel. Stirring music. Crispy sound effects. I think my favorite part was the story and characters. The dialog is really tight and funny, and poignant. I really cared about these people!! Some of the story beats really make me pause and reflect. Powerful. The game has a lot of heart and soul. Reminded me a lot of Cave Story. I loved the world. Great atmosphere. Music is great. Some of the tracks are good enough to stop to listen to. The Sound effects are perfect. Footsteps and umbrella clicks and clacks are all really satisfying. I started wearing headphones. It's a sonic treat. The pace is perfect. Highs and lows, action and rest. I played on medium difficulty, which was Just Right. A very pleasant experience. Bravo! I beat the game and wanted to play it again right away. So many choices you can make differently! Edit. A few months later, I'm already ready to return to this world. This is my fourth playthrough. Please, doinksoft, make a sequel!

AVOID | LACKING | MAYBE | WORTHWHILE | COMPELLING | UNMISSABLE Gunbrella is a side-scroller action-adventure game where you use your weapon - Gunbrella - in a quest for revenge. In terms of what I enjoyed, Gunbrella really committed to its theme (gritty, kind of noir-adjacent, with gore). Although I don't tend to like pixel graphics, it was nicely implemented here. The music was pretty cool. There is a wide range of characters you get to meet and talk to, so that was pretty fun. Unfortunately, Gunbrella is weighed down by small, but numerous, aspects that I'm broadly categorizing as QOL issues. There isn't a map, which would be quite helpful. There isn't really any guidance for where to go even if you know what you're supposed to do. You can't mass buy/sell items. You have to rewatch cut scenes (though they're usually not that long) if you die fighting a boss. If you are interested in 100%ing the game, you will have to play at least one full playthrough + two playthroughs to ~75% to do so, which just feels uncalled for. In terms of my personal preferences, I have a strong dislike of gibberish voice acting, and this game has that. I'm not 100% sure I completely followed the story all the way and so I think there could have been improvements in terms of how it's told. All in all, I don't regret playing Gunbrella, but there were a few times when I felt like I was working against the game instead of just playing and enjoying it. If you vibe with the atmosphere and can follow the story, I suspect you'll enjoy it much more than I did, though be prepared for some frustrating design decisions. I completed the game in ~6 hours.

It's not often I wake up and think, "Can I squeeze a little of X game in before work?" Gunbrella did this. The story is great, the platforming is exquisite, and I'm seen all the things the gunbrella can do, a new ammo type is discovered. Strongly recommended!
