The first thing you must know is that you do not "Shoot" in this game. All your weapons fire automatically. A lot of your targeting reticles stay at fixed distances, and most weapons operate based on a timed cooldown or require you to interact with indicators that appear randomly on the screen. All you focus on is your mobility and your dodging. The game is fun at the beginning as you work on unlocking more pilots and more abilities known as "Augments", but as you finish those and move onto the late-game, the problems begin to show. Even by roguelike standards, the amount of luck required for you to survive in the late-game (Especially on Endless Mode) borders on ridiculous. Weapons and passive (Known as "Utilities") are either very good, or not good at all. Often times you will find yourself in situations where you could level up two or three times and not roll / reroll any helpful weapon or utility that compliments what you have to the point where it will literally end your run since synergies between abilities are very poor and experimenting often hurts you more than it helps. Additionally, for a game that places so much emphasis on mobility, it such does like to punish the players for being mobile. More often than not, the screen is so covered in special effects that you'd be hard pressed to see where enemy shots and asteroids are. Trying to move across the stage to get a health pick-up often ends with you losing more health than actually gaining it because your enemies are many, and they can fire constantly with zero cooldowns. Overall, Gunlocked is a decently fun game that starts strong, but ultimately falls flat due to gameplay mechanics that continually ramps up the difficulty but does nothing to empower the player in the late game

This game hooked me from the start, a great mix of the Vampire Survivors style of Roguelike + SHMUP. Probably my favourite SHMUP actually. I want to see more of them go this route. It's similar to how I feel about what Against The Storm has done for base building games, a perfect marriage of genres. Now I don't actually like Vampire Survivors (though I do enjoy the genre), but the borrowed ideas are implemented in a very satisfying way here. After you see most of the attacks that you can get in the first few hours, mileage will vary with how much more you want to play it. There are a number of unlockables to work on, though personally I just like to play it and try to build a different engine each time while going for all of the Steam achievements. In a run, when building an engine, you need to be adaptive, as your options are somewhat influenced by RNG (as one would expect in a roguelike). I can imagine some players not being big into the 'acquire target then seconds later, fire!' style of SHMUP (I like them), but you don't have to build your ship in that way, with plenty of projectile attacks, beams, drones etc. You can get some really different and fun synergies going in endless mode with the DLC. I suppose the main drawback for me (apart from wanting more of everything) would be that some other SHMUPs can have some entertaining level design and set pieces (comparatively). Highly recommended if you like SHMUPs at all.

It's pretty OK. I got about 2.5h of fun out of it but you're kinda just doing the same thing regardless of what ship you pick and how you build. It's kinda the figure-8 dodge thing and watch your cooldowns and spacing. I beat it and I'm done, don't want to play any more. I like the graphics, gameplay, modifiers, art, sound, music, UI. Buy it on a good sale price.

Fun and simple bullet hell shoot-em up game with, progression system similar to games like Vampire Survivors. Gameplay is smooth and fun, the ship upgrades are fun and make you want to try different combinations.
