Spell Disk is, essentially, the spiritual successor to Wizard of Legend. You are flung into a world with somewhere between fifty and a hundred spells that, while having some overlap and similarity, all generally "feel" somewhat unique despite not really being all that different in practice. Choice and randomness are the name of the game where the notion of "theorycrafting" the perfect setup is nonexistent. While other reviews rather predictably whinge about "RNG", the core challenge of the game is to adapt the tools you're given in each run into a viable build. There is randomness, yes, but you are provided with sufficient resources to -- with a bit of cleverness on the player's part -- draft a build that can complete the game. Like Wizard of Legend, there are certain skills that are just flat out better than others, though it takes playing to figure out which. While Wizard of Legend irked me due to its somewhat clunky engine and difficulty curve based entirely off of "git gud", it did have a level of mechanical depth that felt like it rewarded good execution and clean play. Spell Disk, for all its improvements on the things Wizard of Legend lacked, does not really have this same feel. While the game punishes excessive mistakes, it is far more forgiving on things like taking extraneous hits somewhat out of necessity. Visual clarity in the game largely nonsensical and, at times, downright garbage -- a homage to its Vampire Survivors inspiration -- which forces the gameplay loop down certain necessary paths. In many ways execution is only minimally important in that the best way to avoid the visual vomit is to simply create a build which doesn't care about it....which can be easier said than done until you figure out the reasonably reliable paths to get there. There is one skill, in particular, that seems to be flat out "the best" -- and coincidentally its proper use means erasing the visibility of half your screen. At this point, having 100%'d the game, I can say that I have enjoyed my time playing it but won't be coming back. Similar to Wizard of Legend, for all the million-possible-build options that appear on the surface, the actual underlying depth to the game is relatively shallow. It's enjoyable to problem solve and figure out, but once you do so the actual gameplay does not have too much to offer. Grinding out the achievements once you have the game solved places completion right at the point of "I'm ready to be done with this and move on." A recommended title, certainly, but with the caveat that it's a decidedly average game which will not be winning any rewards. Picking it up on sale for $10 is worth it if you're a genre fan, just know you'll play-and-forget.

This game is heavily RNG driven, which is a mixed bag. There is so much various equipment in it, you can't possibly predict what you are going to see during the run, and the way things connect and interact with each other makes every single run entirely unique. You can only construct a "build" in the most generic sense, and it all pretty much revolves around dealing with what you find. Whether you ENJOY this is up to you. I think it's pretty cool.

I'd call this the Spiritual successor to Wizard of Legend. Repetitive but fun gameplay. 3 games in one btw. and I was able to 100% the game in 40+Hours. Good game! Worth trying out.

This game has a very clever system of progression, and the randomness leads to a lot of fun combinations along the way. It also has what I'd consider a "victory lap" mechanic if your build takes you to the end of a run that is fun both for its homage and a means to enjoy your build one last time. I'd definitely recommend this game to fans of the genre.
