Rocket Rats initially succeeds as a short , imitative title through charming visuals, reasonable variation for the scope, and unique upgrades, skills, and builds. Unfortunately, this game greatly overstays its welcome , which leads to a soft recommendation. The experience quickly transitions from a bullet hell to an idler . With a basic understanding, runs require no input from the player except on selection screens. This is compounded by a single, restrictive map and large hitboxes. Achievements beyond the first win artificially prolonged playtime , working towards evolutions often depends on luck , and there is no reason to swap characters. This is fun to start, but not to complete.
This is one of those cases where a mix review would be more fitting. The only reason I mark this as positive is because I find the idea interesting, but it's poorly made. The game follows the basic mechanics of defeat enemies, get upgrades and go further every run, however is really simple to hit max level once you get the general upgrades and after that it becomes really repetitive and empty, characters play the same so you don't feel any motivation to do anything different other than getting the achievements. It really needed more content and variety, better enemies and different areas, what it could have been a really great game feels more like a rushed release. I would recommend to grab it on discount and with not so high expectations.
Expected time to 100% completion: 2-8 hours Replayability: Short bursts Pros: cohesive style; fun to break the game with OP builds; rats Cons: low build diversity for a game where creating builds is the main mechanic Reviewing positive, but with a caveat. As someone who likes playing a lot of relatively short games for variety, this fit my bill. That said, it is basically a less fleshed-out "vampire survivors" style game. There is some variety in build options, but different builds don't really have a meaningful impact on how you play since the goal is almost always to just stand still and hope everything dies before they reach you. Got full 100% completion in a little under 5 hours (but you could probably do it in less on a first run if completion is your main goal) and didn't feel the need to play more, so it was a satisfying pace. Could see myself replaying this at some point in 5-30 minute bursts while taking a quick focus break or waiting in queue for a multiplayer game, but could never see myself losing track of time playing it since the gameplay is very static.
