Sept. 2025
Halftime Heroes, developed and published by Bigboot Studios, is an energetic and chaotic survival rogue-lite action RPG that blends elements from the increasingly popular "bullet heaven" subgenre with familiar fantasy RPG mechanics. At first glance, it may appear to be another entry in the long list of games inspired by Vampire Survivors, but it carves out its own identity through class-based progression, randomized loot systems, and a fast-paced gameplay loop designed to be both accessible and addictive. The game throws players into increasingly crowded arenas where hordes of enemies rush toward them in endless waves. Instead of wielding weapons directly or executing flashy combos, combat is largely automated—abilities fire off on cooldowns, and movement becomes your main method of survival. The player’s primary focus shifts to dodging attacks, strategically maneuvering through enemy clusters, and collecting XP gems and loot drops. This hands-off combat style might feel simplistic at first, but the layering of power-ups, gear modifiers, and class synergies adds surprising depth as each run progresses. One of the most appealing aspects of Halftime Heroes is its variety of character classes. There are six in total—Warrior, Wizard, Rogue, Monk, Cleric, and Ranger—each with unique strengths and passive advantages. The Warrior, for example, thrives on durability and melee range attacks, while the Wizard offers longer-range spells and magic-based AoE devastation. The Cleric introduces healing and support mechanics, while the Rogue benefits from high critical damage and loot-focused bonuses. These distinctions give the game solid replayability, as every class demands a different strategy and playstyle. The game’s roguelite structure supports a loop that’s designed to reward both short-term risk-taking and long-term progression. Each session, players gather experience, coins, and loot, which they can use to unlock passive upgrades, improve base stats, and occasionally reroll for better item drops. The “roll for luck” feature adds a gambling element to loot acquisition—risking lower-quality items in exchange for the possibility of significantly more powerful gear. It’s a mechanic that encourages experimentation but also makes some runs feel wildly unbalanced depending on how lucky (or unlucky) you are with the RNG. Graphically, Halftime Heroes doesn’t attempt to dazzle. Its visuals are serviceable but far from cutting-edge, relying on a 3D low-poly aesthetic that feels functional more than stylish. Enemy designs are basic, spell effects are minimal, and environments tend to repeat after a few runs. It may lack visual flair, but the clarity of effects and readability of enemy patterns are practical strengths, especially when the screen becomes flooded with dozens of on-screen enemies and projectiles. The soundtrack and sound effects also fall into the “functional” category. There’s a consistent beat to the music that matches the action, but it rarely stands out or enhances the emotional tone of a run. Sound effects for abilities and enemy deaths are satisfying enough, but can become repetitive over time. These elements don’t detract from the gameplay, but they also don’t elevate it. A little more personality in the audio design could go a long way in reinforcing the game’s identity. While the game offers a decent amount of content for its low price point, there are areas that feel undercooked. Boss battles, for instance, lack complexity. They tend to be damage sponges with predictable attack patterns, which makes them more of a stat-check than a true test of skill or strategy. Similarly, the difficulty scaling isn’t always consistent—some runs feel overwhelming early on due to unlucky gear drops or poor class matchups, while others are almost too easy once you stumble upon a game-breaking synergy. Still, Halftime Heroes succeeds where it matters most: it keeps you coming back. The quick turnaround of runs, the randomized upgrades, and the permanent progression system combine to create a feedback loop that’s difficult to resist. You finish a run, win or lose, and immediately find yourself thinking, “What if I tried the Monk with that fire-based relic?” or “Next time, I’ll invest more in movement speed and AoE cooldown.” That constant experimentation gives the game its staying power. In the end, Halftime Heroes isn’t trying to be revolutionary. It’s a game that knows its niche, delivers consistent gameplay satisfaction, and lets players dip in and out of its systems without demanding a huge time investment. For fans of rogue-lite survival action, it offers a fun and budget-friendly alternative with just enough depth and variation to warrant repeat playthroughs. While it has room to grow in terms of polish and presentation, its core gameplay is solid, fast-paced, and—most importantly—fun. Rating: 7/10
