This deck building game does a really excellent job at a few different aspects that makes me think it's worth recommending. I like that it isn't purely deck building and requires standard combat skills as well as building out your deck. It is challenging and offers a good story progression as you play. Graphics are actually still enjoyable, there's replay value, the music and pacing make it an enjoyable story telling experience you can take at your own stride.
3/5 The game isn’t terrible, but it never quite finds its rhythm. I dropped it years ago just before the halfway mark because the pacing felt sluggish and the moment‑to‑moment gameplay rarely became exciting. The combat, in particular, feels unpolished and oddly disconnected, largely due to the deliberate slow‑motion effect applied to every strike. It’s a familiar idea for an Arkham‑style system, but here it’s pushed too far, making encounters feel floaty rather than impactful. The lack of camera control doesn’t help either. In certain situations (both in combat and of the board) you’re stuck with whatever angle the game chooses, even when a manual adjustment would clearly improve visibility. These issues aren’t game‑breaking, though; they’re just persistent annoyances. The real frustration arrives at the final boss. Conceptually, it’s a clever idea, but the execution is extremely poor. Without spoiling the interesting part, the disappointing part is that it devolves into a boss rush. Despite being fully prepared (taking only 1 HP of damage per hit) I still ended up dying in a cheap, unsatisfying way. Overall, the first half feels like a slog, the middle becomes more engaging, and then the ending collapses under its own ambition. The achievement list is bloated as well, with many tied to specific character builds or pure dice‑roll luck. It’s not a bad game, but it’s far from great.
It took about 17 hours for me to finish the main boss run. I then played another 10 hours to unlock all the encounters/cards. So a total of 27 hours of enjoyable play time using the normal/default difficulty. It probably would have been less if I would have figured out some boss mechanics faster. After mostly unlocking everything, there really isn't much more to do so end game (endless mode) is just repeating the same runs over and over trying for a better score. The game loop is addictive by trying to unlock the encounters and defeating hard enemies. The combat while simple is quite fun. The progression is well done and you actually get some feel of accomplishment. The only let down here is the randomness of the game can really affect gameplay. You will quickly find the "cheat" to get better outcomes as you don't want to ruin a run or you just want to move forward easier. The graphics are well done for the age of the game. The music fits well. The voice acting is okay but tends to grate a bit after listening to the dealer harp on repeatedly. The initial dealing either could be faster or skipped. It just wastes time. The deck building aspect is fairly limited but very easy to understand. I did research various encounters online as different outcomes/path can radically change a run. I did get the DLC only as it was very cheap but I felt it didn't really appeal much to me as it didn't add enough to the game to hold my interest. Get it on sale or part of a bundle. It is a nice change of pace from your standard deck builder.
