3/5 This is one of the first games I owned physically. I've beaten it a ton of times, so I decided to replay this for the nostalgia. Everything about Hard Truck Apocalypse is so simple. The story is simple, the mechanics are simple, the graphics were nothing special for it's time - yet it always hit the vibe I couldn't forget. It kind of feels like playing Fallout, just with trucks. You're always roaming and exploring this apocalyptic wasteland, discovering communes, making both friends and enemies. It seems so empty, yet this wasteland conceals many landmarks, broken down in time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3562223012 The story is just there. The script is barebones, bland and it doesn't hold much significance. This feels like the most rushed part of this game, and "reading off the teleprompter" voice acting just makes it worse (Russian voice actors are much better). The ending was without a doubt the worst part. You spend hours driving around looking for this one single thing of the utmost importance, both for the whole world and your personal vendetta, and you end up never finding it at all, so instead you get one of the most abrupt endings of all time. If this game had a decent script I would definitely recommend the hell out of it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3562056056 The Wasteland feels pretty big and it's got a really good variety of biomes. Sadly, just like the story, the quality falls off as you go on, and it's pretty noticeable in the second half of the game. So they resort to the classic strategy, making you drive back and forth for incredibly long distances in later quests just to make it feel slightly bigger. I wouldn't say it's dreadful, but many would find it just that. What makes this game satisfying is the feel of progression. When starting out, you have to be smart about the fights you pick, so every enemy encounter feels more rewarding than the one before. As you advance, vehicles feel more powerful and weapons feel more destructive. For me, personally, this was the game's selling point. I've already mentioned the mechanics are simple, but at the same time, it's perfectly enough for what you need. There aren't too many variations of the upgrades, yet it still makes a difference for what kind of an upgrade you go for. Would you rather be more destructive, tankier, or would you rather have storage to salvage as much as you can from your encounters? It all depends on your play style. Also, these device upgrades that act as small perks are very simple, yet can be very powerful if used correctly. There is a decent number of weapon variations, but I wish energy weapons weren't such an obvious choice. They are incredibly overpowered and beat everything else by a huge margin. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3562230769 I must mention the soundtrack however. It's just a couple tracks, but it sets a really nice vibe while roaming the world. It's distinctive and I still remember it as if I played the game as a kid just yesterday. The thing is, how many games are out there that are remotely close to what this is? This game is special. And now, after replaying it, I can just say that it feels exactly as it did when I was a kid. Badass. However, technically, it is very noticeable that the game is old. If you feel like playing HTA, keep in mind that this game has many issues considering the save files. It goes from being perfectly playable one day to constantly crashing when loading up your save the next. Make sure to set up your settings to your preference at the beginning and DO NOT change them, as you will be unable to load any previous saves. I recommend that you get the DEM ComMod, with which you can either install the community remaster to this game, or simply install a patch that fixes these issues. Have in mind that you must start a new game over upon doing this.

Эта игра лучшая, в которую я когда-либо играл. Я играю в эту игру уже 10 лет, у меня есть оригинальный диск этой игры. Надеюсь, вы сделаете новую версию этой игры, например, выпустите DLC с Иваном. Go, Crossout и HTA: Rise of Clans не так хороши, как эта игра.

Hard Truck Apocalypse / Ex Machina is a peculiar and ambitious blend of vehicular combat, trading simulation, and post-apocalyptic adventure—a combination that, even today, feels distinctive. Targem Games built a world that sits somewhere between Mad Max and a road-bound RPG, where the highways of a ruined Europe become both battlefield and lifeline. From the outset, the game introduces a sense of isolation: small settlements dot the map, each clinging to survival, while the wasteland between them teems with bandits, mutants, and rival convoys. The road becomes your main companion, and your truck—initially underpowered and lightly armed—quickly transforms into a mobile fortress as you progress. The concept is simple yet compelling: survive the hostile world, complete missions, trade where you can, and uncover the truth behind the catastrophe that reshaped civilization. The heart of the game lies in how it uses the truck as both your avatar and your primary strategic tool. Combat plays out in real time, forcing you to maneuver bulky vehicles while keeping weapons trained on fast-moving enemies. As you complete missions and gather resources, you can replace your cabin, chassis, weapons, and cargo modules. Every upgrade has a noticeable impact: heavier armor changes handling, stronger engines let you outrun ambushes, and exotic weapons—from plasma cannons to electric shock guns—alter how you approach fights. This progression loop keeps the experience engaging even when missions themselves follow familiar patterns. Trading also plays a meaningful role; hauling goods from settlement to settlement allows you to patch up your finances, stock up on ammo, or purchase parts otherwise out of reach. Travelling across the map creates a satisfying sense of journey. The world is broken into regions, each with its own aesthetic touches and faction conflicts. Bandit hideouts, abandoned factories, and derelict highways create a mood of desolation, but the world is never so empty that it feels lifeless. Encounters erupt frequently, and even peaceful stretches carry tension because ambushes can happen at any moment. Exploration isn’t just about filling out the map—it’s about discovering new towns, learning who controls what territory, and slowly gaining enough strength to push deeper into more dangerous areas. While the overarching story is straightforward and occasionally predictable, it provides enough motivation to keep you moving forward. Time, however, has not been entirely kind to the game. Visually, Hard Truck Apocalypse shows its early-2000s origins through stiff character models, monotone towns, and clunky animations. Some physics interactions feel odd or inconsistent, especially during hectic combat or when navigating uneven terrain. Long drives through cleared regions can also feel repetitive, especially once your truck becomes powerful enough that minor enemies are little more than nuisances. The enemy AI varies dramatically—sometimes offering a real challenge, other times falling into patterns that are easy to exploit. The game’s pacing can dip when missions send you across large stretches of terrain with little variation, reinforcing the sense that its ambition occasionally overreached its resources. Yet, despite its rough edges, there is an undeniable charm to Hard Truck Apocalypse. The mixture of RPG progression, open-world traversal, and vehicle combat remains unusual and compelling. Few games let you carve out your identity so thoroughly through your vehicle alone—your truck becomes an expression of your playstyle, whether you favor speed, brute force, or specialized weapon setups. The world, though dated graphically, maintains a strong sense of personality, with settlements and NPCs that hint at a larger story of survival and fractured society. The music and atmosphere, simple as they are, contribute to a distinct mood that keeps the wasteland from feeling generic. For players willing to look past age and imperfections, Hard Truck Apocalypse / Ex Machina offers a unique journey that blends genres in ways few modern games attempt. It rewards experimentation, exploration, and patient upgrading more than raw skill, making it a satisfying experience for gamers who enjoy tinkering with builds and carving their own path through a dangerous world. While its limitations are clear and its design reflects the era in which it was made, the game remains a cult favorite for good reason. It may not be polished, but beneath the rust is a surprisingly deep and engaging road-warrior adventure that still stands out today. Rating: 8/10

I feel like we'd of never gotten the absolute banger of Mad Max if it weren't for this game showing us how cool vehicle combat could be.

It's a very good game. I'm very happy that this game is available on Steam. But in the old days, when I was a kid, when I played, the first game, before the loading screen and entering the menu, had a cutscene where our truck was fighting a bandit on the road, but now that cutscene is not displayed. Why? I loved that cutscene.
