Don't let the standard RPG Maker look fool you, because the core combat system is actually a clever, tactical puzzle where you manage the weight, wait times, and defense stats of individual weapons. Boss fights turn into engaging duels where timing your strikes and parries matters far more than just grinding levels. The story and presentation are as barebones as they come, but mechanically it's a neat little indie distraction if you want a quick JRPG palate cleanser.
I discovered this game through a Youtube video titled something like "This $2 RPG Outclasses AAA RPGs" focusing on this game's combat system, and I rolled my eyes at it (the video, not Helen) because dawg it's just Cinnamon Toast TurnOrder, the Action Speed you can see, that's nothing too crazy. Though the way damage mitigation is handled is quite different and really ties the whole system together, so I was a bit presumptuous. It's nice! A 1v1 combat system that managed to stay engaging all the way through, every time I got haughty and/or lazy I died for my hubris. Battle being entirely* dependent on gear and every chest containing such gear made every secret in a dungeon worth checking out and feel rewarding to do as it opened up a new puzzle piece to your battle strategy. Most importantly, the game's kinda funny, quite enchanting. You a'ight Helen, bring it in, dap me up. Side note for Steam Users with controller and window size issues: 1. Download EasyRPG, extract the ZIP 2. In another window, navigate to your folder where Helen's Mysterious Castle is located (...steamapps > common > Helen's Mysterious Castle > helen) 3. From the EasyRPG folder, copy "Player.exe" to the folder in the step above 4. Again in your helen folder, rename start.exe to something else (like "start-old") 5. Rename "Player.exe" to "start.exe" This will run Helen's Mysterious Castle in EasyRPG, which should help alleviate your controller issues and let you resize the window.
Fantastic game! I think it stands out as a concise exploration of RPG mechanics; there are a lot of clever design decisions, just enough time to develop them, and very little fluff. It's a mechanical short RPG, in contrast to a lot of other short RPGs which are story-focused. Would highly recommend!
