I thought Senua's Sacrifice would be a narrative-driven action-adventure game, but it's actually closer to a walking simulator. (Mind you, a horror walking simulator.) Gameplay-wise, you either have to solve puzzles or fight enemies. Puzzles are usually the environmental kind and not very difficult. Enemies come in different types, but once you have figured out their moves and timings there are no surprises. However, you are not given any tutorial and there is no interface, so you have to look up the controls beforehand. And good luck understanding the mechanics yourself ! While the game is beautiful, the camera is glued to Senua's back and the FOV is very narrow, making it hard to appreciate the landscape and making some fights incredibly annoying. But all that is beside the point. Senua's Sacrifice shines because of its atmosphere. From the opening credits onwards you hear the voices Senua hears, some of them addressing you. Sometimes Senua herself addresses you. You share her hallucinations (or are they ?), her paranoia. You never quite know what is real and what Senua is imagining, but you share her fear and her anger. You travel from abandoned villages to lonely shores to nightmarish rivers of blood, alternating between sunny days and oppressive darkness, which are as much part of Hel as they are a reflection of Senua's state of mind. The story deals with heavy subjects like grief, abuse and mental illness, in addition to being fairly violent. But it's also very emotionally satisfying. As the story progresses you learn more about Senua, and you become increasingly invested in seeing her succeed. The stakes become personal . (And Senua's actress is absolutely incredible. What a performance.) In addition, the game is fairly short, so I really encourage you to try it. It's quite an experience. Just remember it is cutscene-heavy and maybe less action-oriented than you might think.
A dark and emotional game that blends Norse mythology with a story of a warrior, Senua, and her struggles with severe psychosis as she travels through Helheim to save the soul of her fallen lover, Dillion. Combat is simple but incredibly satisfying. I really loved the character designs for the enemies and bosses. The final fight itself was poetic, the longer you spent fighting, the greater sense of relief that hits you when it's finally over. Definitely sums up the message for the entire story. The audio is a *chef's kiss*. I saw a recommendation to wear headphones and couldn't agree more; it made the whispers, voices, and doubt feel incredibly real, adding to the games tension an really adding to the immersion Hellblade tells a powerfully emotional story. The visual elements for the entire game are beautiful...in a haunting way, Ninja Theory created a world that felt both eerie and breathtaking. It is an easy recommendation.
Very fun game that you can 100% within 10-15 hours. This is a strong, emotional, and poetic message of alot of heavy themes and metaphors. This was a fun experience that I got to beat within one day and my only complaint is that I ran into a couple movement glitches. Aside from that if you are a big fan of norse mythology like me than this game right up your alley as well. Solid 9/10 for me <3
I came in expecting a simple action game, but Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice ended up being one of the most memorable psychological experiences I've played. The voices constantly talking in your head made me feel uneasy the entire time, and the game does a great job putting you in Senua's mindset. It's not a long game, but the atmosphere, sound design, and story stuck with me long after I finished it. Definitely worth playing with headphones.
Would give a medium review if there was an option; but between the two options I think I recommend it. Good things: - Interesting story - Incredible graphics (from 2017, looks and runs better than games from 2025) - No items / inventory (as someone who hates minmaxing 371 addons across 95 weapons and crafting); focus on the game and story only Bad things: - It is boring at times. Like really boring; Senua is slow, a lot of the puzzles force a lot of walking around and it sucks. I think the mirage god at the beginning is the absolute worst, which is unfortunate because I think people will click off after that. Further levels are not as bad, but still the walking can feel like a chore. - Repititive silly "puzzles"; either find some really stupid off angle, or just match the runes blah blah. Like ok do it a couple of times then find something else. Same thing with the arches that change something , that was also repeated throughout.
