I'll start with the caveat that this is a game that's still in early access. There are going to be moments of rebalancing and filling things out that will come over time. Currently the tech tree is a bit too restrictive, and it swings from "oh dang I am running out of money" to being able to snowball fairly easily once you figure out the mechanisms. There's also a bit of an AI snag at present (late 2025) where the competitor studios run out of money and get stuck in debt traps, so it can frequently happen late in Act One that you're the only company still releasing films. All that said, this game has an utterly delightful core loop that has you feeling like Josh Brolin's hard-bitten studio fixer from "Hail Caesar." You're dealing with egotistical stars, mishaps shooting on location, special favors being asked by a corrupt mayor, all the while trying to make sure your summer lineup of films looks commercially and critically viable. I love unlocking new story elements and trying to create the perfect tale of grisly revenge, I love putting out stupid but lovable films that children flock to, I love working my way through the filming tech to slowly make better and better pictures. It's a good game and I expect it to get better over time.

Review after about 17 hours in early access in August 2025. TLDR, this game is really cool but you should wait and buy it on release. I have to say, I do still think about this game months later. So now to gush about the positive: + This is a management sim where you make and run a film studio from the talkies period until about 1949 at this point in early access. To someone like me, that's amazing! + They put in actual things that happened in history. Good and bad, there's even a disclaimer for it at the start of the game. Some of your employees are racist, the nazi's will contact you about movies, and you have the options to give your actors drugs. From the game developer's perspective, to leave things like that out is to pretend they didn't happen. Personally I appreciated that. + You will get to storyboard your own movies as much as you like, and stack your cast. + There's an in-game version of the Oscars, known as the Pollux, that you can compete in vs the AI. Now the bad: - So I expect the AI to cheat to a degree against a player but at this point it feels frustrating because there is nothing you can do about some things. --- For example, in the film alliance every AI studio votes together as a block using influence points. I tried to just outvote all of them in a few ways. My most desperate attempt was to just throw things up for them to vote on while only contributing one point of my own. The point of which was to run them out of points so I can swamp them out on the one thing I cared about. Even after doing that they still outvoted me, and by the same amount they did before I did all of that. --- For another example, at some point in the game you get to pick what kind of film studio you will be, and I chose Boutique to make artistic films. The way to progress that though is to 'sweep the Pollux' one year in every category. That's outside of my control, as the AI can (and did) win just 1 category each year to keep me in purgatory. - There's a lot of things that just are not in the game yet. So some departments will just cap out on what they can do. - The game starts to drag. I stopped about 17 hours in in 1937. I think the game goes through 1949? And that's just one playthrough. It started to feel a little bit like a treadmill. - There's a 'Code' that gets introduced to regulate content in movies. You need to comply with that to avoid a fine and stay in the alliance. However, your writers don't seem to get that memo as they just keep making movies that violate the code. Also the only way I saw to avoid code issues was to write the movies myself, which is time consuming. Further, once the script is in production there isn't a good way to see if it violates the code until you are about to release it. That is frustrating and should be fixed in the UI. This is a game with some good bones but it needs some work to fill it out at this point in early access. I intend to wait until release to play it again.

From the "Not recommended" reviews, I've witness/understand their frustration. Most of the game mechanic issues have been resolved (softlocks, bugs) so far, since the Fall updates , to me. Currently in my hours (20 hrs; ~9 hrs was me accidentally leaving the game running sometimes). I put spoilers on elements of this game, that onlookers shouldn't know yet. I agree, there should be a decent (don't make it too easy) way to repair your reputation , without restricting ALL ability to make studio progress & hire better film crew. This game is fine being somewhat linear or 1D. We don't really need to see competitor's progress stages of each movie, but if possible to patch in , go for it, would be nice to see their AD duration , but probably would make this game more challenging, than it already is. Some people haven't figured the factors that make/break your film rating/profits. I don't mind a few of the long upgrade projects time, as long as it matches the incoming timeline (I shouldn't be upgrading old tech, if it should be outdated by the year I'm in) as this game finalizes. One dude pointed out: "when writing stories, adding more story elements is not something that should be locked behind a research tree." I agree, but shouldn't cost more. And this: "The current implementation of Tech trees put undue limitations on [film projects] that significantly hamper gameplay. Researching your own camera, for example, can easily take more than the current playable time frame. (1929-1946) . " I agree. Lastly, I haven't met these issues yet , but there should be a way to buy cinemas at any time, if you forget to do it in the 1st year. And a way to make a deal with competitors to buy/rent cinemas. And we need a better way to increase film crew skills/stars for better movies, making it possible to reach, e.g. editor stars, up to 10/10. And a way to find stars rather than being forced to order beatings onto competitors, and create/grow talent/stars. Well I appreciate the overall game as it currently is. I wish I could rotate buildings as I construct them. The background sound/music is a bit low, would need to be patched since I maxed it in settings and still need my external speakers to decently enjoy them, from my default PC speakers. Very sophisticated game, I like how methodical you would need to be, to make sure-fire progress. I like that Weappy Devs actually considered feedback and made Fall updates/patches. I like that the Menu song does not repeat. This game helps me alleviate the misery of not being able to make films IRL. So I'm glad I can do it vicariously, that comforts me. I will make another review after grand changes to this game or near final stage.

Since it's a game which is in an Early access state, It's still too soon to judge the game. But till now, I'd say it's a game with so much potential and (Kinda) new ideas. You gonna get overwhelmed by enjoyable mechanics at first 10hrs of your gameplay. But after understanding the basic mechanics and make a fair amount of income, it'll become boring over time. Making movies have an specific pattern which gonna get repetitive as soon as you release your first +9/10 rated movie. And since you gonna become rich after like 10 or 15 yrs into the game. Suddenly all of the best movie crews gonna be available for hiring , movies performances are so relied on the quality of crew so automatically u wont have a movie below 7/10 rating even if u choose low quality stories . Game has some *Major* aka, not important events which seem to have a big impact of gameplay at first. but once u experience only one of them, It's like u have seen all of them.... like i said it's an early access game with so many locked branches(They have literally put a big sign on those branches on the name of "work in progress"). And bugs...... If it was a month ago, u would definitely get crushed by some stupid and game ruining bugs... u can see older comments to se how impactful they were, But now I can say almost all of those bugs are gone (If they don't add new bugs)... overall ACT 1 was an experience mixed with both enjoyable and frustrating moments. Yet the enjoying part was heavier than the other (tens of hours of my gameplay was on GOG version of the game. so dont see that 7.5 hour gameplay)

First and foremost, I want to clarify that this is more of a mixed review. However, considering I’ve sunk 125+ hours into the game, I’ve decided to lean positive overall. That said, there are a lot of caveats. Let me start by praising the visual design (though not the UI, which is horribly clunky), music, and sound design—they’re fantastic. The core concept is brilliant, and the gameplay loop is engaging. But once you’ve played for a while, cracks begin to show. I won’t mention game-breaking bugs here, as the developers fixed most of them last week (they’re irrelevant now), but issues remain: 1. Talent Pipeline Crisis: Every actor, director, cinematographer, etc., has a current skill level and potential. After 5-15 in-game years, a critical issue emerges: all actors with 8+ potential are over 40–50 years old, while younger actors cap at 5-6 potential. Barring one scripted event that spawns a few decent people, this problem persists indefinitely. It’s less severe for directors or producers, but for actresses, whose roles often have age restrictions, it’s glaring. Finding a sub-30 actress with even 5+ potential is nearly impossible (I saw none in 100 hours; a few appeared later). Roles like “spirited young lady” or “farm girl” force you to choose between a 40+ actress with good skills or a 20-year-old with a skill of 5. 2. Zero Competition for Staff: You can sign an actor for a single movie, and they’ll wait 20 years without complaint. No whining, no quitting, no rival studios poaching them. You can hoard 50 actors, 10 directors, and producers indefinitely—they’ll never care that their paycheck from a decade ago dried up. 3. No Real Competition: Buy all cinema theaters, and rival studios linger in pre-bankruptcy limbo, unable to screen films but never actually collapsing. They just… exist. 4. Nonsensical Awards: Studios with 3/10 producers, 5/10 directors, and 3-6/10 actors can churn out 9.9-rated films that win “Academy Awards.” Meanwhile, your meticulously crafted films with 9/10 talent, layered plots, and themes might not even hit 9.9. Example: A rival’s “romantic thriller” starring a female soldier vs. a tropical island crime gang—no plot, themes, or ending, just protagonist and antagonist—somehow sweeps awards. I get that such films exist and have wide popularity, but since when they even get nominated? (Though the Best Actress award made sense—that actress committed.) 5. Underbaked Mechanics: Many systems feel pointless or broken (ignoring the still-broken Boutique challenge or actors’ inability to earn commercial or artistic statuses, which I hope gets fixed soon). Examples: - Security Team: Can spy on, threaten, beat, or guard staff. But why? Risk alienating your employees trying to find blackmail material to save $30K on contracts when you’re swimming in millions? Only used guards once, via a scripted event. - Legal Team: Useful exactly once, also via script. - Illegal “Gifts”: Useless. Just a meme. These mechanics could shine if actors grew restless after years of unemployment, rivals actively poached talent, or lawsuits erupted over contract breaches. Imagine using blackmail to retain a star or hiring bodyguards because a rival tries to harm your lead actor after he left them. But none of this exists. Overall: I loved the game at first glance, but its flaws and imbalance grew hard to ignore. It has massive potential to become a story-generating gem like Crusader Kings, but I doubt the devs can fix its ocean-sized, but puddle-deep systems before their planned late-2025 launch. Eight months isn’t enough. Still, I’ll follow updates and hope they prove me wrong. Thanks for reading!
