July 2025
Home Behind 2 is a compelling yet often overlooked entry in the roguelike RPG genre that combines elements of survival, political commentary, and resource management into a side-scrolling, procedurally generated journey through a fictional war-torn country. Developed by TPP Studio, the game builds upon the core concepts of the first Home Behind, shifting away from the more personal story of a refugee to focus instead on a broader revolutionary movement. You play as Banan, a young medical student who joins a rebel faction fighting against a corrupt regime. Set in the unstable nation of Scaria, the game draws clear parallels to real-world political upheaval and civil unrest, using its fictional backdrop to explore themes of resistance, ideology, and sacrifice. At the core of the experience is a blend of exploration and strategic management. You lead a small band of fighters through a series of hostile zones, gathering supplies, upgrading your mobile base, and engaging in combat encounters. Each mission unfolds in a side-scrolling environment where you direct your squad to move from node to node, uncovering randomized events, resources, or enemy ambushes. These exploratory phases are punctuated by choice-based scenarios—some moral, some tactical—that add a layer of unpredictability. While the interface is fairly minimal, clicking through maps, scavenging for fuel or food, and making snap decisions becomes engrossing as you try to maintain the health and morale of your group across multiple regions. Combat plays a significant, if slightly hands-off, role in the game. While battles are technically in real time, they operate more like controlled auto-battles where you assign skills and positioning before letting your squad handle the rest. You can pause to issue commands or adjust tactics, but in general, engagements play out largely on their own. This system prioritizes preparation over moment-to-moment tactics—success hinges on having the right party composition, weapons, and gear going into a fight, rather than on improvisational combat strategy. It’s a system that works well for those who enjoy long-term planning but may feel unsatisfying to players looking for reactive, hands-on gameplay. One of the game’s stronger features is the progression system tied to your base of operations. Between missions, you return to your camp to heal, craft, train, and expand your facilities. There are a variety of building upgrades and systems that unlock new options, from diplomatic channels to advanced weaponry. Over time, your camp becomes a vital hub, with improvements that carry over between runs in true roguelike fashion. This layer of meta-progression provides a sense of continuity and achievement, even after failed missions or squad wipes. It also ties directly into the recruitment system, which lets you build your team from a wide roster of class-based characters, each with unique skills and roles in combat. Visually, Home Behind 2 uses a hand-drawn 2D art style with a muted, gritty aesthetic that complements its themes of hardship and rebellion. Characters and environments are stylized but expressive, conveying emotion and atmosphere without resorting to cinematic flair. Cutscenes, presented in a comic book panel style, help to fill in narrative beats between missions, while the soundtrack underscores the tension with a somber mix of orchestral and ambient tones. The writing fluctuates between earnest political drama and awkward translation, which sometimes undermines the emotional weight of certain events. Dialogue can feel stilted or overly simplistic, but the broader narrative arc still resonates, especially as it mirrors real-world social movements and the ethical dilemmas that come with fighting for change. Despite its strengths, Home Behind 2 is not without its flaws. Exploration, while engaging at first, can become repetitive over longer play sessions. The procedural design ensures variety, but the limited range of events and resource types leads to a sense of predictability. Similarly, the combat, though functional, lacks the depth and engagement of more tactical RPGs. It leans heavily on preparation and gear rather than in-battle decisions, which can cause encounters to feel like background noise instead of the centerpiece of gameplay. Additionally, the interface and pacing can be sluggish, especially in the early stages when your party is underpowered and resources are scarce. The game also relies heavily on randomness, which is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it keeps each playthrough fresh and challenging; on the other, it can feel unfair when runs are derailed by bad luck rather than poor decisions. Players who thrive on overcoming odds will find satisfaction in adapting to these challenges, but those looking for more deterministic strategy may find frustration in the game’s reliance on RNG. However, the sense of gradual growth through camp upgrades and squad improvement mitigates some of that frustration, allowing for long-term payoff even in the face of short-term failure. Home Behind 2 ultimately succeeds as a hybrid experience that doesn’t fit neatly into any single genre. It’s part survival game, part strategy RPG, and part political commentary. Its focus on managing people, resources, and morale under extreme circumstances creates a compelling gameplay loop that rewards careful planning and emotional investment. While it lacks the polish and tactical nuance of some of its genre peers, it offers a rich setting and a thought-provoking premise that elevate it beyond its mechanical limitations. For players who enjoy roguelikes with a heavy narrative slant and are willing to embrace its slower pace and hands-off combat, Home Behind 2 offers a unique and rewarding journey into the heart of revolution. Darkest Dungeon with guns? The game looks like a Darkest Dungeon in a present-day war setting, but gameplay is largely management. Another reviewer brought up Football Manager and I'd have to agree. It's all about the many ways to customize your team, base, vehicle and weapons. The main aspect of the game is the combat, and moving it to a timer-based real time system was a great choice to give you both hectic firefights and enough control to use skills to tip the balance in your favor. Well done rogue-like, with mild story. Recommended for fans of such games. The biggest downside is the dialog which is very childish.

Bought this game at a discount hence don't expect a USD100 play-style with this price. Although cheap and not much of a brainy, tactical skill involved but really worth it. Better than expected. Highly recommend if you want to play an interesting and stress free game. You can choose to go straight towards the ultimate goal (which will be highly re-playable) instead of grinding to discover the whole map.
