Originally bought this around the time my son was born. Now my son is an adult and loves this game and it's a special memory for him. I guess it's a special memory for me as well.

Homeworld and Homeworld 2 (especially these Remastered releases) are masterful accomplishments of both tone and technique well before their time. The Homeworld series created vibes before the popularity of that term when such artistic style was known as "atmosphere". But the game also has legitimate strategy chops and innovative gameplay for the genre. So much has been written about the series it's hard to say anything new, but it cannot be stressed enough how much emotion this title evokes, the beauty of the visuals and the compelling story told in a vibrant, engaging fictional world. If you like games both old and new that stand out, such as Fallout, OuterWorlds, Shadow of the Colossus, Portal, Star Control II, Left 4 Dead 1/2, Hades, Halo, WarCraft/StarCraft and the like, the Homeworld Remastered pack is worth your time and admiration.

I played the original Homeworld when it was released in 1999. I remember the general excitement building up to its release in gaming 'zines of the time and that excitement was justified. I remember opening the box the game came in, and it wasn't just the game disk: there was a big artbook and manual in there as well: those were the days when you got real value for a game, it wasn't a "special edition" box or anything, just the base game at release. I remember excitedly putting the disk in the CD- ROM drive and impatiently doing the install. Then the moment I had been waiting for for months came: the opening credits and the start of my first playthrough. To say I was blown away by what I saw and heard was an understatement: Homeworld was simply ahead of it's time. The story, the music, the gameplay, all of it was simply an amazing experience. One of those first time plays that you never forget. So many titles in the RTS genre in the late 90s kept reusing similar story tropes and gameplay mechanics the genre was steadily becoming stale. Homeworld changed all of that and breathed new life and vibrancy into the RTS genre, which along with RPGs (ever since I played the original gold plated Legend Of Zelda on original NES in the late 80s), are my favorite game genres. Even today in 2025 these games hold up very well despite being 25 years old. I highly recommend the Homeworld Remastered Collection for anyone, whether you're a first timer or an old Homeworld vet that want to return to the game after many years.

Booting Homeworld, you soon realize that the game was developed not just as a piece of code but as a work of art. It instantly evokes a sense of emptiness and alienation rarely found in other fictions. Add to that an impressive sense of scale and gameplay mechanics ahead of their time, and you get a true landmark of PC gaming. The story follows the discovery of an artifact deep in the deserts of the planet Kharak, which reveals the location of a mythical world. It is believed to be the homeworld of the people inhabiting Kharak. While some see the destination as the source of the game's title, I have always felt that its meaning lies instead in the journey it depicts, trading one homeworld for a liveship in a quest to find yet another in the unknown. Every step toward the game's conclusion uncovers new plots and new peoples, each with unique ship designs and alien motivations. Each encounter left me with a mix of fear and wonder. Supporting this impressive storytelling, the game features huge 3D maps with verticality impressive for its time, requiring players to adapt to every scenario on the fly. This usually means adjusting fleet compositions, from destroyers and carriers to assault frigates or smaller multigun corvettes, each with its own strengths and weaknesses, and dispatching available forces across multiple areas of a map. As the challenge builds and the storytelling grows more pressing, completing the final missions and finally reaching home felt exhilarating. I will always remember Homeworld as a prodigy of its time and a profound expression of melancholic poetry.

Homeworld was pure genius and mastered the game world in a way no other has been able to do, I miss it so, all and anything made books, models, and collectibles was an obsession for me. Many games have hooked me but nothing like HomeWorld An amazing classic RTS with combat that still holds up perfectly today. If you want epic space battles with little lag and downtime, a good story, and old, yet charming graphics this game is for you 100%.
