UPDATED: I finished the game. The time played as of this review is me doing everything except one (side battle, didn't find it in the mission, oopsie, adds another 5-ish minutes to the review). So, basically what I said below about the game stands. The story is actually pretty cool, and the combat just keeps getting better and better until you feel cool as $%#% for pulling off the things you eventually pull off. This game is AMAZING. Buy it. I've only completed the first mission, so take this as an early review. I'll update it after I no life this game after I get some sleep, it's 4 over here. The combat mechanics are really, really good. Nothing so far has been a gimmick. The boss design (the demo boss, but the second phase of it) took me a couple of tries because I was just enjoying the fight so much I wanted to keep testing various strategies out. Actually, every enemy I have encountered has been designed very well. Everything that is happening makes sense, and it is chaotic in a way that keeps you ENTERTAINED. A lot of action games these days try to stress you out, or nerf your HP and tell you to get better. This game gives you every way to succeed in a way that makes sense, while also letting you have just enough HP to make things fair, but not so much that you end up face tanking. The game asked me to interact with it, to parry the things I could to charge up my skills (no timer cooldown, recharge skills by melee attacking or parrying), it asked me to dodge, and it told me it was okay to get hit a couple of times when I just simply failed to defend correctly. After a few tries on the boss, I ended up getting the perfect rhythm and nailing it, and instead of being relieved, I was excited because it was FUN. Oh, also, when I did die on the boss, it let me restart after a certain threshold. So if you do perish, you don't have to fight multiple phases just to get set back. You can learn as you go! I HOPE there is a mode that gets unlocked that lets you do the complete fight though, I'm in love with this combat and I'd love to do it. Performance is good, there are resolution and framerate options, no hiccups or stutters. The story so far is interesting, and I say this as somebody who does not really enjoy anime shows. It's nothing mind blowing, but the writing makes sense and the characters are interesting enough so far. This was a long early review. Oops. Have I mentioned how much I love the combat because it ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE?!

I bought this game out of spite, why you may ask? Trend-hopping low effort Survivors, Balatro and Ball X Spit-likes will gain 100x more while pure, unadulterated artistry such as this, obvious indie GOTY will not get as much as a mention at the Game Awards. I will proceed to force gift this to a friend of mine who won't even play it, and make fun of me for it.

A spectacle fighter that draws influence from many action games that came before it and fine tunes the gameplay making every encounter feel like a dance. I haven't had this much fun controlling a character since Bayonetta 1
