Okay so I’m going to thumbs up this one but I want to be clear that I only recommend this game if most or all the following is true: You’re somewhat new to VR and you’re still getting a solid feel for what kind of fun stuff is out there OR looking for top of the line visuals (see note about computer below). You didn’t just finish HL Alyx and are looking for something close to it. You have a pretty beefy computer (I have a 4090 for context). It’s on sale (I picked it up for about 10 bucks). You don’t care about story at all. You’re okay playing on the easiest setting because it gets unnecessarily difficult towards the end. Here’s what I liked the most: The graphics. Wow. One of the best looking games I’ve seen graphically since HL Alyx IF your rig can handle it. The environments looked very very good in my bigscreen beyond 2. I also liked the EARLY combat. See more about what I didn’t like combat wise below. I also liked the refining and crafting potions despite its simplicity. The attention to detail was pretty cool. One last thing I liked is that it’s short. That’s a good thing because the combat at the end got annoyingly intense. I was more relieved that the game ended after it and didn’t overstay its welcome. More of a neutral comment here but there is a small variety of guns to use and upgrade. I say neutral because I don’t think more guns was necessary and I also felt that just upgrading the pistol was enough for me to complete the game. The other 2 weapons didn’t seem better, just different. I enjoyed the little amount of exploration that was involved. Climbing around felt okay and finding pick ups to use at the refiner was satisfying. The visuals though again. Top tier especially when you swim underwater. It really feels like a majority of the effort put into this game revolves around that and you can really feel it. Idk if that’s a good or bad thing though. Now the dislikes: The story. Idk who I am or why I’m doing what I’m doing other than because some general on a screen said “do this thing!”. Also the person talking to me kept telling me to do things. I feel pretty confident that I won’t spoil the story by telling you everything I know about it lol. You emergency land on this planet that has a big terraformer on it for some reason and you spend most of the game working to get that terraforming thing working so it can lift a big rock to blow up some big enemy ship. When you accomplish this the game’s credits roll. I also didn’t care for the characters or their dialogue. There’s 2.5 characters other than yourself and they all have the personality of a graham cracker (the plain kind not the kind with cinnamon). Sometimes their dialogue (unskippable) went on too long. It wasn’t always clear what do to next or where to go. I eventually figured it out but a reminder or some kind of HUD telling the player the objective or where to go next would be helpful. Okay now why I didn’t like the combat. The combat starts off light and a welcome addition. There’s some under water and above ground mixed in. For some reason the second half of the game the devs decide to throw everything but the kitchen sink at you. Like endless waves (seems like anyway) of enemies spawning like magic in areas you know you’ve cleared out already. The very last level was just an absurd amount of bad guys spawning from all over and coming from different angles. There was one point where I was just chugging health potions while shooting enemies over and over lol. I was playing on the normal mode and stuff doesn’t kill you too fast. It just seemed like a little much. Instead of challenging in a fun way it came off as annoying. Maybe on the easier setting it would have felt more satisfying to mow down waves of enemies? Who knows? Finally the last thing I didn’t like was I decided the check out the Arena Mode after I finished the story. So, remember that annoying combat I just explained? How would you like to enter a maze-like area just like that BUT you start without a gun! And you need to run around like a trapped mouse looking for items that spawn to help you stay alive while you run from check point to check point. A checkpoint is just an area where you can’t leave for 15 seconds while enemies shoot at you and you just have to hide behind boxes to not get hit. Yeah, sorry this wasn’t what I would call a fun experience lol. I feel like if the combat was a little more engaging and there were a handful of weapons to try (that you could spawn with) then it might be more enticing. But nah hard pass. TLDR: If you just want to see some amazing visuals and your computer can handle it, pick this one up on sale. The visuals/environments get an A+ from me. Everything else is a

Graphics are top notch, I was like wow, through out the whole game. Almost as good as Alyx. Combat was nice and I died a lot so it was challenging. Climbing was fun too as well as the swimming. I finished it so it kept my interest all the way to the end.

One of the better VR games out there. It compares well with Half-Life: Alyx in terms of gameplay. I liked the music, the story is there but kinda forgettable. I liked the gameplay variety in this game, there are multiple swimming sections where you need to use your arms to swim, that was cool, and they are well paced, never outstaying their welcome. Climbing sections as well. There's also crafting and scavenging systems for weapon upgrades. Nothing too deep, but its there. Ledge grabbing controls are a bit inconsistent (might be a valve index issue), but better than any other VR game I have played. Graphics are good (it runs on Unreal Engine), but the game enables upscalers/TAA/render scaling by default, which makes the game look quite blurry. Disabling all that stuff does make a noticeable difference in image clarity, but obviously runs much worse. My 4070 Ti was struggling to get 120 FPS on Index without all the upscaler BS on max settings. Wouldn't be half bad, but for some reason there are also insane lag spikes without upscalers, which in VR can make for poor experience. There are a good number of options in the settings for graphics and accessibility. 30 euro for a 6 hour game is a tough ask IMO, especially given there's pretty much 0 replayability, but on a sale its quite good value. Negatives & Nitpicks: * Holding pistol with 2 hands for the laser sight is inconsistent. Sometimes it just doesn't want to activate. * Backpack UI is still quite clunky (despite them apparently reworking it), with accidental clicks on menu elements a bit too frequent. A point and click system would've been better, even if less "immersive". * Half eaten/used health items do NOT appear on the top slot in the inventory, so you will end up with a bunch of half eaten food * I don't think the game ever tells you how to open the main menu, or that you can manually eject your weapon magazine * Weapon wheel opens way too slowly (like 3 seconds of holding B) * Manual reload system is a bit shallow. You basically smash the half-ejected magazine of your weapon against your body/arm IRL once your magazine runs out. Other than that, it's just infinite ammo.

I have mixed feeling about this one. If this was a flat game then it would be a 4/10 at best. I guess because of the lack of these types of games in VR it just lunges over the 5/10 line for me. The graphics are great. But everything else is mid.

I don't know how this game isn't more popular, it has very fun mechanics, full swimming and climbing and an inventory system with a Half Life Alyx Style gun upgrade system, and in my opinion a much more interesting resource scavenging system, having multiple types of resources, instead of just resin in HLA. The first half of the game was so much fun, exploring new locations, fighting new enemies, having a good mix of combat and the swimming/climbing, however the second half of the game was not quite as good, it was mostly combat, and at that point there were no new enemies, and it kind of all felt the same, but I still enjoyed the overall game. Is it worth $30? With a campaign that only took me 4.5 hours to finish, no, but if you get it on sale like I did it is for sure worth it. I got it for about $10, but I think the game could be worth $20, it has replay value for me. On an Index, the controller grip sensitivity by default is way to high, I was squeezing the grips way to much it was hurting my hands, but thankfully there is a setting to turn it down - Climbing and Grabbing sensitivity are individually controlled - I turned both down to the lowest setting and then it worked fine. There was also some things that the game didnt tell you, that I at least didn't find out until the last level in the game. I assumed for the alternate weapons you would find them and upgrade them (like in HLA) but you just craft them in the 3D printer directly, I didn't find that out until the guy told me it was my last chance to upgrade stuff so I actually clicked on the other weapons, but to be honest I enjoyed using just the pistol, the levels felt very tailored to a slower approach. The other thing I found out in the last 5 minutes is that grabbing from your shoulder on your right side grabs a grenade, and left grabs health. I am left handed, and I kept having to open the UI (which was a little clunky to navigate and kept switching tabs) and grab medicine that way, until I had to shoot with my right hand to get an angle and went to grab a grenade with my left hand. Story wise, I wont spoil anything, but there was quite a few routes for twists that I thought could have happened near the end, and none of them did, it kind of felt flat, but it still wrapped up the story nicely, but I think a twist would have been more fun, and left potential for a sequel. Overall though, I really enjoyed the game, definitely going to replay it in the future, it had its bugs, but what VR game doesn't just think that the $30 price tag is a bit high for such a short campaign.
