It's good, but I don't like the fact that it became a rouge-like. I feel that the first game was borderline perfect in what it offered, with a sequel I really just wanted more of that. However, Overtime is quite addictive, and to say it isn't fun would be a lie. Once more content gets added it will be even better, but I do hope more characters get added. The game so far fully focuses on John Sawyer, who I felt was the least interesting of the three from the first game. Anna Conda and Mowman deserve to be added, do so and I would consider this game to be fantastic.
RECOMMENDED (70+ Hours on Record) Let's make this incredibly simple for the illiterate crowd flooding the forums: HUNTDOWN: OVERTIME IS A ROGUELITE. It says it on the store page. It says it in the developer FAQ. If you bought this expecting a linear, hand-holding campaign and are now crying because you died and lost your current run weapons, that is a severe user error. You bought a goose and are upset it doesn't bark. - The Hard Facts - Difficulty: It isn't "too hard." I am playing with physical limitations and have cleared both current EA zones. If you are stuck, you are playing blindly. The Meta: Stop trying to bullet-sponge your way through fights. Find a high-yield ballistic weapon, search out the explosion mod, and actually memorize the 5 basic attack patterns on the boss. Early Access: There are currently two zones. It is a grindhouse prequel. You die, Tony puts you on the operating table, you get permanent cybernetic upgrades, and you go back out. That is the loop. If you lack the patience to learn mechanical boss fights or hate the roguelite loop, do the developers a financial favor: utilize the Steam refund window immediately and clear out. Don't damage a polished, brutal action game's algorithm percentage just because you didn't bother to read the product description. Highly recommended for players who want raw, uncompromising 16-bit arcade violence. If you need a safe space where you never lose your items, look elsewhere. edit: changed the review for her viewing pleasure (ripped instead of spiky)
I absolutely love this game just like I love first Huntdown. Pixel art, music, sounds, animations, voice acting, combat - everything is near perfection for my taste in this game. I don't even mind that it is rogue like, which is a style I usually don't like very much. But the gameplay is so much fun that I don't really care about dying all the time :) But yeah, be ready to die a lot, especially first several hours before you get upgrades that makes the game easier. If you like 80s movies and sidescroller retro shooters you absolutely need to try this! And while you are at it give first Huntdown a try as well ;) Easy 9/10 for me. Can't wait for more!
The only bad reviews are the ones not liking that it's a roguelike, when it clearly says it's a roguelike lol. This takes the concept implied in the first game and refines it into actual gameplay. The roguelike elements are pretty satisfying, especially when you get on a roll and end up with exploding bullets, obliterating everything that comes on screen. Really fun take on the roguelike and prefect combination with the huntdown gameplay. Don't mind the haters, give it a spin.
